Welp. Remember when I said I’d post the rest of the Greek creatures as a pack you could buy? Maybe not, because I scrubbed that from the post that had it. It turns out I probably don’t have what it takes to make money off art, because I suck at getting anything done unless I have a deadline. And setting ones that only exist in my brain clearly doesn’t work, as the TDG shows… But it also means I’ll be showing off what I did so far without charging. I’ll find money some other way, probably with writing or something.

Sirens, am I right? In myths, the sirens were a variety of nymphs. Like all nymphs they were excellent singers able to lure people away into the wilds. The sirens were especially good singers, but of course they could not compare with the deathless muses. What set them apart from their sisters were their bird bodies and fatal edge to their music. Cursed by Demeter for failing to find her daughter, they were given an island in the Mediterranean as their haunt. They sung to sailors in a bid to make them jump into the tumultuous waters and drown. For seemingly no reason other than their own malice. In pottery their shape is ambiguous. Sometimes it is merely the head of a woman on a bird, other times it’s a sort of bird-centaur shape. When given hands they also may play instruments to enhance their own voices.

As time went on, the sirens began changing into more sea beings than aerial ones. Where once they were merely confined to an island, it was their maritime association that saw them become the mermaids of the Middle Ages. The shape of the mermaid isn’t original to them: Mesopotamian spirits had it long before the sweet-singers, and some Celtic figures may predate the fishy sirens. However, most mermaids have some roots with them. Singing to sailors is especially the key mark, although they do so with a twist of lust in the mix. Siren is even the word for mermaid in many romance languages. When depicted in their original bird forms, they tend to lose the grace and talent they used to possess. Sirens in modern stories are often murderous, eating those they drown. Authors like Rick Riordan reduce them even further to a sort of vulture with only the face of a human.

My siren is the armed sort. I just thought it would look different. Her bird half is inspired by birds of prey more than seabirds, seeing as how they can’t move away from that island of theirs. Her upper half has the porcelain whiteness associated with goddesses and nymphs in ancient Greek poetry. The dryads and naiads don’t have this because they’re less airy and more earthy, but I think the nereids will. Unlike her sisters, she’s enamored with her island home and has taken to using washed up shells as jewelry. Also, her downy feathers extend up her chest because no booba for u.

Open your heart to the water fairies and the boundaries between you and them will dissolve. Once you feel close to them, it will be easier to experience them in their own habitat.

METHOD:

  1. Relax completely. Imagine that you are sitting beside a beautiful lake or a calm stretch of ocean. This may be a familiar place that you love,or it could be a place of your own imagination. Take the time to settle in this spot. Fill in all the details of the environment. See the shimmering greens and the blues of the waters, and all the other colors, reflected and refracted. Look at the azure sky arching overhead. Notice any plants and rocks, any features of the landscape- let your eyes dwell on these. See how close you are to the shore, where you are sitting or standing and what you are wearing. Notice in particular that you are wearing a large, beautiful emerald pendant, and that the stone is flat against your chest, over your heart.
  2. Listen to the sounds around you. Can you hear the breeze, the birdsong, the sound of the waves? Smell the freshness of the air and the scent of water carried on it. Feel the pure, moist air on your face and the gentle wind playing with your hair. Enjoy all of this and make sure you feel comfortable and relaxed.
  3. Now concentrate on the center of your chest, where your heart is. Breathe in the beauty of this place and allow your heart to be filled with love for it . Let your heart feel warm, open, and invigorated.
  4. Remember the wonderful emerald hanging against your chest, close to your heart. As you feel a closeness and empathy with the beauty of the waters, so the emerald begins to shine. The warmth in your heart is flowing into the emerald, which pulses and glows in response. The radiance within the emerald is gentle, yet amazingly powerful. Soon you are aware that its wonderful light is stretching out over the waters, bathing everything in the purest green. The emerald green is reaching into the waters, mingling with them and shining outward again. The waters are becoming clearer, and you begin to see into their depths. What wondrous gifts and treasures do you find lying there? What magical beings are present?
  5. Invited by the emerald, called forth by the love in your heart, fairies are beginning to emerge from the waters. Watch as they come, strange and beautiful for the most part, others in shapes you may not have imagined. Continue to let the emerald light shine from you and to send a welcome from your heart.
  6. Let the fairies emerge in their own way. They may remain far out on the waters, or they may approach closer to the edge. They may even come onto the land. Watch them as they appear, remaining serene and letting the emerald light of your heart continue to shine. Listen also, for the fairies may be talking, laughing, whispering, or most likely of all- singing.
  7. Invite the fairies close, asking if one of them will speak with you. Listen to what the fairy says. If you like, you can ask questions- for instance, you may want to find out what you can do to enable you to draw closer to the water sprites in everyday life. The answers you get may be startlingly clear or they may not make sense at first. Try not to puzzle over them for now.
  8. When the time seems right, tell the fairies that you are bidding them farewell and that you honor them, and thank them for their presence. Say that you will visit them again. Let the emerald light slowly fade and shrink back into the crystal on your chest. Affirm that the emerald is closed, and that your heart is, for now, also closed. Touch the emerald and feel its coolness and solidity. Draw away from the scene.
  9. Now come back to everyday awareness, patting your body all over to make sure that you are in the here-and-now. Make a note of all you experienced and any thoughts that have arisen in a special notebook.
  10. You can repeat this journey as many times as you wish. More questions may occur to you, and you can ask your water-fairy spokesperson to answer them. Do not be surprised if the responses you get give rise to more and more questions, for that is the fairy way and is part of your quest. Happy Journeying!

So, this scene always amuses me. Let me tell you things!

Barbossa eating slices of apples with a danty fork and his pinky all extended. His general attitude and body language. Iggy Azalea probably following behind in a row boat scaring away mermaids lest their heads explode (might explain why the they didn’t bother the ship until it was anchored).

I like that they made a point for us to see Barbossa fill his teacup with alcohol. We view this as humor or even shocking, “I don’t think he’s allowed to do that, how unprofessional”. However, beer/grog (heavily diluted) was standard for sailors, helped prevent scurvy and was easier to keep than fruit.

Fun fact aside, look how desperate he pours that shit, like “oh God,” as he sees Gillette making his way on over. Barbossa already knows the whole crew just standing there, waiting. “Quickly. Shove this apple in my mouth, before I gotta acknowledge this shit”.

“Aye. Mermaids. (Ya dumb fucks).”

He has a separate cup of precious fresh clean water. So extra.

Mostly though, Gillette. Poor Gillette. Survived Barbossa in Curse of the Black Pearl, only to serve him in Stranger Tides. His distaste. His irritation. Forced formalities and etiquette. Look at his face. He is so done.

“Sir.”

“I was driven thence by foul winds for a space of 9 days upon the sea, but on the tenth day we reached the land of the Lotus-eaters, who live on a food that comes from a kind of flower.

Here we landed to take in fresh water, and our crews got their mid-day meal on the shore near the ships.

When they had eaten and drunk I sent two of my company to see what manner of men the people of the place might be, and they had a third man under them.

They started at once, and went about among the Lotus-eaters, who did them no hurt, but gave them to eat of the lotus, which was so delicious that those who ate of it left off caring about home, and did not even want to go back and say what had happened to them, but were for staying and munching lotus with the Lotus-eaters without thinking further of their return; nevertheless, though they wept bitterly I forced them back to the ships and made them fast under the benches.

Then I told the rest to go on board at once, lest any of them should taste of the lotus and leave off wanting to get home, so they took their places and smote the grey sea with their oars.”

The Siren Vase is an Ancient Greek art masterpiece, created circa 480 BC - 470 BC in Attica, Greece. This piece’s medium is pottery. The image on the Siren Vase shows Odysseus (Ancient Greek King) passing the sea through The Sirens, whom were three sea nymphs that had the power to kill sailors with their bewitching tune.

Our t-shirt design inspired by this vase is available on Amazon (US) andRedbubble Worldwide.

The sirens of ancient Greek mythology were bird-women whose enchanted singing lured sailors off course, causing shipwreck and disaster. This vase is painted with this famous scene and is known as the Siren Vase. It is a wide-necked vessel thought to have been used for serving wine. The image is of beautiful detail in a magnificent black ground. These two colours contrast very well together enabling the siren painter to create the beautiful Siren Vase.

sketching/doodling concepts for Persephone’s buddies in the human realm, friends she grew up with. Esus (Hermes!), Calypso and Kleio.

I decided to rename all the characters so it feels less unoriginal, but I tried to give all the renamed Greek-God-based characters alternative versions of their own names, or names of similar gods or mythical figures.
Esus is a Gaulish god that is supposed to be analogous to Hermes, though his legend is pretty different. He’s a really interesting god though, so I liked renaming Hermes after him.
I renamed Persephone Morana, after a Slavic goddess of winter and death - the name is nice, and the lore feels appropriate. Morana, or Marzanna (she has many names), is a very scary, formidable goddess, and I wanted some of that cold steel for my Morana.
Hades is renamed Aides, which is simply another name he had in ancient Greek lore.

In my story, Esus is a fairy who serves the human queen (analogous to Zeus), so he knows Morana from interacting with her in the palace. He commonly liases between the human queen, the fairy king, and the siren king. He’s the only fairy Morana knows, her mother unwilling to let her meet other fairies who might report her and have her returned to the fairy realm, so he and Morana are pretty close friends on account of that.
Calypso is a palace messenger who typically uses a silk and bamboo glider to distribute messages, mail, etc. She’s a siren from the sirens’ realm, and will flirt with anything. She befriends Morana through Esus, and often sneaks Morana into social events and gatherings to have fun. She’s named after a sea nymph (oceanid).
Kleio is another siren who works as a court musician, entertaining royalty in the human palace. She bonded with Calypso over a shared love of glider racing, and joined their group as a result. She’s also named after an oceanid.

Being non-humans in the human world has made the group fairly close, and Morana’s friends have a fairly important role in the story when she’s taken back to the fairy realm by Aides.

There is a difference between a mermaid and a siren.

Sirens are born from violent, watery deaths. Drowning, being murdered at sea, their bodies being thrown in to the water shortly after their deaths, stuff like that. They are the ones that sing to sailors (or anyone) and drag them to their deaths when they get too close. They are born anytime.

Mermaids are born when someone who has a great love for the sea (or any other body of water) dies. These deaths have to be peaceful, though people who commit suicide are sometimes brought back at mermaids. All mermaids are born on either solstices or equinoxes.

deep violet or blood red? sunshine or moonlight? 80s music or 90s music? orchids or dahlias? garnet or ruby? moths or butterflies? aphrodite or athena? grapefruit or pomegranate? angel’s halo or devil’s horns? sirens or banshees? lorde or florence + the machine? the birth of venus or the starry night?

The Siren (1901), by J.W. Waterhouse

Compared to “Ulysses and the Sirens” painted in 1891, the siren shown here is a much more humanlike creature.  Only at the very end of her legs some scales are visible to show that she actually belongs to the sea.  The shipwrecked sailor does not believe his eyes when he sees the naked figure playing the lyre, but the fear for her power prevails on his face.

This work is the last in a series where Waterhouse combined the themes of death, sex and sea.  Earlier works include Circe Invidiosa (1892), Danaë (1892), The Merman (ca.1892) and A Mermaid (ca.1895).
