Imagine Danny Fenton working as a security gaurd at Arkum Asylum. Like, he jokes around with the inmates, makes horrible puns, try to get his stick in the mud coworkers to crack a smile. Nobody would take this bean pole seriously. Not noticing the lean muscle underneath his skin, or the way he surveys every room he enters in an instance. He’s become a favorite with several inmates like Harley and the Riddler; not afraid to make witty comebacks and banter. There is just one thing though. He tells them one day if they ever try to escape they best do it when he’s off the clock because they won’t otherwise. Don’t mistake this for a challenge, its a warning, he informs them. And the most mysterious thing about this new gaurd is that there has yet to be a successful prison break when he’s on duity. This kind of record in Arkum is unheard of. Who knows what kind of attention that might cause. Mabye even the curiosity of a certain local Vigilante.
If I were a villain trying to break out of Arkum and ran into Danny-freaky-ass- slendrman-looking-Fenton standing at the end of an unlit hall lookin’ into my soul with his dead fish eyes I’d turn right the fuck around.
Some punks with more guts than brains tried to charge him and Guard Fenton just stared them down until the inmates lost their nerve and wouldn’t get any closer than ten feet from Fenton. The lights flicker. He doesn’t move, doesn’t blink. The man might not even breathe. The feeling is similar to walking through the forest and stumbling across a bear standing in your path. Something that seems so friendly from a distance but you dare not cross in close quarters. Something that makes your heart fall out through the seat of your pants.
Hardened crooks who would willingly risk being tracked down by The Bat if they escaped won’t gamble their chances with Fenton. The guy simply has bad vibes, “horror movie vibes” as Harley so eloquently puts it. For everyone who has the good sense to stay put during Danny’s shift they get a bright, friendly smile and a congratulatory “Good choice” during his rounds later. Two words that feel suspiciously like dodging a bullet.

15 years later i still can’t get that mayor election scene out of my mind where Vlad simultaneously fought with Danny while dozens of his clones overshadowed the voters. Even if Danny gets a fraction of that clone mastery, it’s enough to deal with the more stubborn inmates who ignore (or are further enraged) by all this hullaballoo over Danny’s creepy vibes and decide the problem can be solved by punching through it and the fear it exhibits
So imagine that same scene with Danny at the end of the flickering hallway and a bunch of inmates indecisive about testing the vibe, when one inmate pushes through the ‘cowards’ and decides to charge anyway, only to stop a foot from Danny and just… turn around and go back without a word
And no matter the strength in their body, they turn back. No matter the strength of mind or the crazy in their head, they… eventually… turn back. It takes longer, it takes a bit more, but Danny’s had years of training and these are, ultimately, not masters of the mind.
They all hang back, watching the spectacle of Joker circling around the unmoving guard slowly, crowbar spinning in hand.
“You don’t think this is reckless?” the guard asks.
“Reckless? Or crazy?” is followed by high-pitched laughter.
“Maybe both. But I think you should turn back.”
They both seem to have a gleam in their eyes.
“Why?”
The Joker’s, in fact, seem to be a more pronounced green than usual.
“I think this isn’t worth it.”
It makes him look frankly psychotic.
“Maybe you should go back, and try this another time.”
Like a cat about to pounce its prey.
“Another time, when you might have a better chance.”
They stare at each other, unblinking, both eyes that same gleam that seems to be an unearthly glow from within their irises. A trick of the poor lightning fixtures, perhaps.
The swinging crowbar comes to a slow stop, and they stand in silence among the chaos of a rioting prison population.
Then, the Joker laughs. It’s high-pitched and causes anyone paying attention to want to flee, but the guard’s lips tilt up in one corner. He’s smiling back.
The crowbar is set against the wall.
“Alright.”
Another cackle.
“Another time.”
And the Joker turns around and casually strolls away, and the gleam in his eyes doesn’t stop until he’s back in his cell and a guard has locked the door behind him. He never can explain the logic of what made him go back, only that something inside of him wanted to, and that something left a lingering wish to stay, wait, plan for a better time.
Perhaps a time when the guard wasn’t on duty.
He laughs.
It always does a good job of hiding the fear.
Damn it, I want to write a fic for this now.
But might I offer: a scenario where Danny just appears in the hall when a prisoner making a break for it. They had turned around to check for chasers and turn back and he’s just there.
The pants-shitting fear of that would be immediate. Like, just showing up from the shadows is definitely a weird thing. But it’s also kind of a Batfam thing and no one wants to fuck with the Batfam mid-prison break. Being in Arkham is bad enough, it sucks much more when you’re in the ICU in Arkham.
And this beanpole is definitely giving off ‘I’ll put you in the ICU’ vibes
The group talk about the riot a few days later when theyve all gotten out of ICU or solitary for leading it. They run with the same gang and were seperated into different floors and even wings.
So when one of them mentions seeing that creepy new guard at the end of the hall, another calls him a liar.
“I saw him and I was on the other side of the building! You’re a liar!”
“No, youre lying! I saw him at the end of my hall… Those green eyes, creepy motherfuc-” he was cut off when he was suddenly shoved out of his seat.
What started as an argument between two people turned into a fist fight between most of the table as each shouts where theyd been and how they’d seen the new guard.
The only person who didnt join the fight was Riddler, who watches and tries to decipher the riddle of where that creepy boy had really been.
Harley walks over, stands strangely close to him, and whispers “I saw him too.”
No I’d read the crap outta this
You know Arkham probably offers like insurance, dental, and livable wage in an attempt to stay staffed. If they don’t even need experience it’s all the more incentive for Danny to work there. Plus he can protect people that way without too much media and attention, ideally that is.
Plenty of PTO and mental health days, too. But the biggest advantage Danny has is that this job comes with built in excuses for Danny to be late or miss work. After all, being Arkham security would paint a pretty big target on your back whenever one of the inmates breaks out. Even if they survive being attacked at home or in town, that’s probably when most guards quit on the spot.
The Warden is just so thrilled that Danny’s not quitting after his first supervillain attack. Danny’s relieved he’s not fired again. After all, the Warden doesn’t need to know that the supervillain was from his rogues gallery instead of Batman’s.
Being able to get patched up for free in the infirmary is a nice bonus, too.
I like the implication @mc1303 gave that all the prisoners just assume Danny is part of the part of the Batfam, whether or not he actually is. Probably a mixture of the creepy factor and his black hair and blue eyes.
It would be hilarious if Batman had no idea about this Arkham guard or the fact that so many prisoners are freaked out by him until one day as he’s doing the usual saving the day one of his Rogues Gallery makes a comment about “I’ll say hi to your son tomorrow when he does his usual rounds past my cell,” or whatever.

From last year’s. Utah FAN-X. I will not be attending any cons this year being how busy I am. Also I’ve had other goals I would like to do before going to cons. Also trust me. This con is stupid $$$ for what it is. As much as San Diego but more ghetto. I’m going to call it how it is. This is Utah’s biggest con and I’m local to it but, nothing compared to other cons. I will be doing shoots and the goal is at least 1 new cosplay by end of the year.
