How peckish penguins find their food

Animals have used the same technique to search for food that’s in short supply for at least 50 million years, a BBSRC-funded study suggests.

Creatures including penguins search for food using a mathematical pattern of movement called a Lévy walk. It might sound complex, but it is a random search strategy made up of small steps and a few larger steps. Although a Lévy walk is random, it’s the most efficient way to find food when it’s scarce.

Finding food in a timely fashion could be a matter of life or death. Choose the wrong direction and it could be curtains. But moving in a random search pattern is mathematically the best way to find isolated food.

Kitten paralyzed by botched microchip insertion might walk again

The kitten had to be microchipped as part of the adoption process. But soon her rescuer noticed something had gone horribly wrong. The kitten started acting lethargic, couldn’t walk properly and dragging his entire left side. She thought it was odd since it happened right after the placement of the microchip.

These three little cuties are looking for a home to call their very own

A little about them: They are a bonded trio and must be adopted together. They are 7 & ½ weeks old and are friendly little balls of fluff who love attention.

A little about us: We are a small scale rat rescue located in King George, VA. Feel free to check out our Facebook by searching for VA Rat Rescue. (Or Lovely Little Rats Rattery - our old name.) We no longer breed, but we do raise rescue litters that are transferred to us from local shelters, or are brought in from community referrals. You can also check out our website here: https://varatrescue.wixsite.com/lovely-little-rats

Little Rolo is on the lookout for his forever family

He is available for adoption with his two 7 week old brothers (Snickers & Butterfinger, pictured in a previous post). They are a bonded trio and must be adopted together. Our rescue is located in King George, VA

Adoption fees are 50% off (this week only)!

We are celebrating Mother’s Day in the best way! We are cutting adoption fees in half for all babies that are picked up this week. Check out the lineup because there are a ton of adorable faces waiting to meet you

Millie - Approximately 8 months old (she has been with us for 3 months now). She was the first rescue momma we took in after starting back up as a rescue. She came to us the day before she gave birth. She has been available for adoption for over a month now and she keeps getting stood up. She is such a sweetheart and has intro’d well with all other females (ranging from 3 months old to 7 months old) in our home. This week only adoption fee - $8

Coreopsis & Geranium (Corey & Jerry) - Approximately 2 months old. Corey loves to play & Jerry loves to snuggle (he bruxes & boggles when given a good scritch). They are a bonded pair from our last rescue litter and must be adopted together. This week only adoption fee - $17 for the pair

Marshmallow’s Sweethearts - These babies are 5 & ½ weeks old and almost everyone has been cleared to go to their new homes! They are fully weaned, properly socialized, maintaining their weights, and happy as can be. (Two pups are not yet available and are marked as such on the pictures. One male was our little runt so he is staying back to receive some extra TLC and one female is recovering from an injury.) This week only adoption fee - $10 per rat (must be adopted in groups of 2 or more)

Let us know if you have any questions and feel free to reach out at anytime to schedule a pickup. Local meetup in King George, VA. Further discounts may apply for large group adoptions.
