A basic shape Axehound, testing the shapes out. It is, for me, a hard creature to map out, while trying to strike a balance between cuddle and pet-able, and spiky hard crab and shrimp feel. 

This is it! Finaly sheet of this skyeel journey! Here you see the greater skyeel family, all gathered around!

The female of the Greater Skyeel is the largest, most feared and most aggressive in the skyeel family tree. It is nomadic, solitary, and aggressive and deadly to anything it encounters when it is hungry, grumpy, or simply does not like the looks of! Rows of razor sharp teeth combined with considerable bite force make the greater skyeel like a flying shard blade - cutting through whatever it bites. This also produce some humorous observations where a greater skyeel loses most of its lunch as it makes such a clean, thorough cut, the rest of its prey outside its jaw falls free to the ground to waiting scavengers.

The model sheet. I want to make this creature scream ‘badass’ and ‘danger’ just from the looks of it!

This is the female greater skyeel with full sail. Unlike aquatic fishes, back fins are only retracted when doing dive bombing.

The model sheet. The yellow ‘flag’ is usually not extended unless for fronting to another male, or for flexing in sight of a hot fish.

This is the male greater skyeel with all his bits and bobs extended. Put away your dirty thought. I’m talking about the air sac and the back fins!

This is the size chart for all the skyeels, and the first sheet to be compiled because at one point I really need to know just how big these things are, in relation to a person.

Here are all the skyeels in their relative sizes. The silhouette of the female greater skyeel has been constantly reworked all the way until the last day of this project to finally have that right feel to it.

Here are some color explorations! I am very much inspired by the Avatar movie many years ago, and remember reading about how the banshee patterns are based on racing cars and the like. So I also want to try doing that. I even tried using abstract painting for color inspiration!

What are some ways the greater skyeel could interact with a character? What if it’s a creature in a game? It’ll have idle action, attack action, and dying. For an aggressive animal like this one, that accounts for most of its ‘interaction’ would be with a person.

The greater skyeel is the first skyeel I have sketched, and it has been through a pencil mess of an evolution before its shape starts to settle. These are the final stages.

Lesser, Common, and now the Greater Skyeel! Here are some early head shape explorations.

Here are the final designs for the lesser skyeel, whose sexual dimorphism is based off of something like a Mullard duck or Northern cardinal.
