those women were braver than any US marine and i am not even remotely joking. women got divorced and lost custody of their kids and were forced to see psychs because of their “perversion”. they literally had to speak in code - calling kirk/spock “the premise” and some were outed by asking another trekkie what their opinion of the premise was.

the fact that fandom evolved from that to us having ao3 is INSANE and i am so fucking grateful.
