Whats your process of writing? Do you take a journal with you, write stuff on your phone or sit down at a certain time to write? On the left, my journals I write my poem ideas in. On the right, my finished first poetrybook ‘Teenage Journal’! I’m used to avoid spoilers at all costs, and I hate those who share them. In Italy we’d say “c’è un girone dell’inferno per quelli che fanno spoiler” (“there’s a Circle in Hell for those who do spoilers” linked to the Divine Comedy). But a great book is one that we can appreciate even when we already know the ending. In these case we do know the story but it’s retold in a fresh way.
Madeline Miller’s “The Song of Achilles” is a retelling of Iliad by Homer but from Patroclus’s POV. Achilles is not a God, he has a human side and so he’s deeply conflicted. We see him trough Patroclus’s eyes, growing from a privileged child (a bully) to a young man who has the weight of the Country on his shoulders, a guy who is destined for greatness but sill, as a human being, he has his feelings.
Today I wanna talk about “The ninth house” by Leigh Bardugo.
Premise: it’s not a YA, it’s the first book of a series and, above all, it is NOT a book for everyone. I mean, there’re explicit scenes of violence (even sexual).
It’s terrific dark fantasy set in the present day in Yale’s university, between ancient secrets societies and macabre rituals. I’ll not tell you anything more so you can play detective because do not be fooled to understand right away the plot or the main character.
I don’t even waste time mentioning the plot. All you need to know about “The Priory of the Orange tree” by Samantha Shannon is: high fantasy Dragons Pirates Magic Different POV from such good characters Wonderful cast Political intrigue Queendoms Dragon warriors Same sex relationship Amazing world building Did I mention the DRAGONS???
“Every morning I promise myself that I’ll spend the entire day as a man. But I think Lili’s thoughts, I dream her dreams. She’s always there” - The Danish Girl Just rewatching this amazing movie. It’s inspired by the true story of Lily Elbe and Gerda Wegener as they navigate Lili’s groundbreaking journey as a transgender pioneer. Three words: love, courage, strength!
If you are looking for a beautiful love story and at the same time so daily that you can empathise with the characters, which are very well written, “Call me by your name” is the perfect book to accompany your summer days. . . . SPOILER FREE The heart of narrative is the love story between Oliver, a 24-year-old American boy, and 17-year-old Elio. Summer has begun, and for Elio, this means holidays in the family villa in Liguria and the arrival of another host student of his father, as every year. When Oliver arrives, Elio will find that they share much more than Jewish origins and day after day, he will feel more and more questions growing inside. The typical restlessness of adolescence, the fear of being discovered, the terror of finding himself, are just some of the emotions that will upset this summer and make it unforgettable.
It’s interesting, today, reading how Oliver and Elio deal with the issue of homosexuality in a more closed society like the ‘80s one.
