Happy Wednesday bookstagram! I am going to get so much done today I hope. I only work for like 4 hours and the rest of my day I am free to read, take photos, enter rep searches that I want to enter, etc…
I still haven’t read outlander but I watched the first season of the tv show I know I’m awful! I’ve actually been to one of the castles they filmed in when I went to Scotland in 2015.

The Arcana

once past these doors, it is every soul for themselves,
let out to run, hide and fight,
make it until dawn
and survive the game of madness

she looked up into the dark sky,
the Arcana above them all
two triangles in a diamond representing
mountains in front of the setting sun

the dusty smell of the wildflowers was surrounding her,
the desert stretching wide.
they were not alone in this game.
people of the sands.
it was their territory.

when a hand covered her mouth,
she didn’t bother to scream,
no-one was out here to hear her anyway.
she was in the hands of the enemy now.
she wouldn’t make it until the setting moon at dawn

I’m used to avoid spoilers at all costs, and I hate those who share them. In Italy we’d say “c’è un girone dell’inferno per quelli che fanno spoiler” (“there’s a Circle in Hell for those who do spoilers” linked to the Divine Comedy). But a great book is one that we can appreciate even when we already know the ending.
In these case we do know the story but it’s retold in a fresh way.

Madeline Miller’s “The Song of Achilles” is a retelling of Iliad by Homer but from Patroclus’s POV.
Achilles is not a God, he has a human side and so he’s deeply conflicted. We see him trough Patroclus’s eyes, growing from a privileged child (a bully) to a young man who has the weight of the Country on his shoulders, a guy who is destined for greatness but sill, as a human being, he has his feelings.

Today I wanna talk about “The ninth house” by Leigh Bardugo.

Premise: it’s not a YA, it’s the first book of a series and, above all, it is NOT a book for everyone. I mean, there’re explicit scenes of violence (even sexual).

It’s terrific dark fantasy set in the present day in Yale’s university, between ancient secrets societies and macabre rituals.
I’ll not tell you anything more so you can play detective because do not be fooled to understand right away the plot or the main character.

No space is too vast or too small to be filled by our thoughts and our reveries, especially those spaces that comprise what we call ‘home’, according to French philosopher Gaston Bachelard. In his seminal book “The Poetics of Space”, which was published in French in 1957 and translated into English in 1964, Bachelard takes readers on a lyrical journey, examining the domestic places that shape and hold our dreams and memories, from cellars and attics, to drawers, chests, and wardrobes, to nooks and corners. The book’s focus on the emotional response to architecture, both in life and in literary works, has been inspiring philosophers, architects, writers, and psychologists ever since it came out, while Bachelard’s stirring, mysterious imagery has been encouraging readers to stop seeing ordinary spaces in ordinary ways.

Hi fellow book lovers. I apologize for the lack of posts recently. There’s been so much going on in the world right now I just needed some time to digest everything that’s happening. I’ve also started lettering again, and since I have the time now I thought I might as well brush up on my skills and hopefully be good enough to open my own handmade shop some day. If you’re interested in my artwork, you can follow on my journey here: @seraseah. Right now, I’m just focusing on getting better.

And on that note, I must say I haven’t read much lately. I started In Cold Blood but I couldn’t get into it. I felt there were too many unnecessary information being thrown in there and I got bored after reading just a few pages. I may be a little impatient to get to the good part but this drag has seriously put me in a slump. I’m probably going to put this book on hold and pick up another book to read. Maybe… A Room with a View?

I’ve never read anything by Truman Capote before, and only bought Breakfast at Tiffany’s because I love the movie. I was curious about his work so I decided to get one of his famous books In Cold Blood, in which he reconstructs the 1959 murder of a Kansas farmer, his wife and children. I’m pretty excited about this one since it’s based on true crime. Has anyone read this before?

Thanks for sharing with me your reasons for joining bookstagram in my last post. It’s nice to know that we’ve all come together for the same purpose.

I’ve finished this book late last night, and I’m surprised that it made me cry. It was just too touching. I love the historical aspect of it, the women coming together to support one another, but the romance between Annabelle and Sebastian really warms my heart. This is one enjoyable read that is going to stay with me for awhile. Just a little fyi, there were few steamy moments between the two that made me blush, in case some of you aren’t comfortable with those kinds of scenes. But I can assure you that they were written beautifully. Go read this one if you haven’t already.

This is my collection of Jane Austen’s books. And while I was taking this photo, a random thought came to my mind - why did I join bookstagram? I guess I’ve been feeling tired and unmotivated lately, and having thoughts about giving up. And subconsciously I must be thinking about this quote, “When you feel like giving up, remember why you started”. I’ve joined this community for a few years now, and have gone through a fair share of ups and downs. Sometimes, I wonder if I’m wasting my time doing all these. People in my life never understood why I do this. They will say that I’m wasting my money buying books, wasting my time taking photographs. But they don’t understand that this is my passion. This is what I love to do. And that’s why I decided to join the book community, to find like-minded people, to feel a sense of belonging. To know that I’m not alone.

Why did you join bookstagram?

Apologize for the repost as I didn’t like the way my previous photos look on my feed. Breakfast at Tiffany’s is one of my favorite Audrey Hepburn films that I’ve seen one too many times. Now I can’t wait to dive into this book.

Changing things up a little because I got bored with my previous aesthetic. I’m currently reading Bring Down the Duke still, only because I spent way too much time on Sims 4 lately. This book is fun. I love Annabelle Archer. She’s brave and smart, and her chemistry with the Duke is just… amazing. ✨

Happy Tuesday, fellow book lovers! Do you have any favorite fairytales or fairytale retellings? I have so many! *Beauty and the Beast* is probably my most favorite fairytale, and I looooove finding retellings for it! One of my favorites is *A Curse So Dark and Lonely*. It’s so good!
