Jonathan: It seems like this part of the castle might once have been where the women lived. They’re all long gone now, of course.

me, vaguely aware of one (1) plot element from Dracula albeit one that could’ve been added by later adaptations: babes? vampire babes?

confirmed

I am delighted you are learning today that the brides of Dracula are a Bram Stoker original.

frankly so far they seem more like barely tolerated roommates of Dracula

I desperately want the roommates of Dracula to have names and backstories. I’m pretty sure that they don’t, canonically, but I want them to.

I think the minimum backstory we get is the implication in the text that they are not all his ‘brides’ but that two are related to him—sisters? sister and a daughter?—and that at one point he loved them enough to want to make them immortal as well. Certainly there’s an excellent well for fanfic, of their slow descent into hatred and resentment of him for damning them.

I saw this post about what would have the weird sister in Dracula be wearing and the OP wrote in tags that they would be lounging in Aesthetic tea gowns and I couldn’t have agreed more, so obviously I needed to sketch them. Think of this as a part two for my sketches about some of the characters in 1897 clothing.

[Image ID. Digital art of the three vampire women from Dracula. The leftmost woman is fair and blonde. She is standing and wears a green, flowing dress with a high collar, a belted waist, and puffed sleeves that taper to fit tightly at the forearms. The middle figure has dark hair and a tan complexion, and she sits drinking tea. She wears a dark red dress with muttonchop sleeves and a bow at the collar. The rightmost woman is also dark-haired and she stands, dressed in a dark yellow dress with a high, frilled collar, long dropping sleeves, and a belted wait with a long trailing tail. End ID.]

I must draw everyone’s attention to the best footnote in all of Leonard Wolf’s Essential Dracula.

Is it just me or is anyone else hearing a sink draining slowly.

XVII. In the moonlight opposite me were three young women, ladies by their dress and manner…Two were dark, and had high aquiline noses, like the Count, and great dark, piercing eyes that seemed to be almost red when contrasted with the pale yellow moon. The other was fair, as fair as can be, with great wavy masses of golden hair and eyes like pale sapphires. All three had brilliant white teeth that shone like pearls against the ruby of their voluptuous lips… The fair girl advanced and bent over me till I could feel the movement of her breath upon me….  I was afraid to raise my eyelids, but looked out and saw perfectly under the lashes. The girl went on her knees, and bent over me, simply gloating. There was a deliberate voluptuousness which was both thrilling and repulsive…
