Måneskin were so humble about winning Eurovision. They cried, hugged and celebrated. It meant so much to them.
What went through your minds when it sunk in that you had actually won Eurovision?
It’s an unbelievable feeling. We feel like everything we did since the day we met and started playing on the streets is really making sense and it’s worth it. Being recognised at such a huge level for us means everything. When we throw away all the stuff that’s around us, we’re just four friends playing music and we’re playing the music that we love.

I’m never gonna stop dunking on people who say “In 2016, I didn’t think in my wildest dreams that it would be this bad” because 1. Everyone with half a brain could see this, and we’re very lucky it hasn’t been worse and 2. Seriously, what were you expecting? Moderation from the “adults in the room”? Jared and Ivanka to save the day? Lol.

instead of working on what i was supposed to work on, i wrote a little snippet set ten years before the main story of The Final Days of Brandi Hellstrom. not sure if i will ever put this up on ao3 but it will stay here. you don’t need to read it to understand chapter 1 (which comes out 5/28/22) but i needed to ‘rehearse’ with the characters.
The library was a low, flat, ugly building that seemed to perpetually hunch into itself.
The walls were thick and unfinished brick, chunky and exposed. Gum and grit were stuck in their crevices and a faint musty smell clung to everything, most of all the scratchy, worn down dark green carpeting that covered the cheaply tiled floor. Some patches of it had been cut up in places after being badly stained or damaged, revealing the black and white tiles, though the white tiles were now tinted yellowish from age and wear.
The library was small; Brandi could walk the span of it in ten minutes or less, excluding the offices and backrooms where they organized new books and files. She rarely had reason to go into any of those rooms; she was a checker, and her job was to scan student IDs so students could take out books.
She stood or sat on a low stool behind a low counter- so low, in fact, that her elbows braced on it awkwardly when she sat on the stool, so mostly she stood, though it hurt her feet.
She liked the job because it got her out of the house at night; the community college offered many evening classes for part time students who had daytime jobs, and she worked from six o’clock to midnight on Saturdays, and from three o’clock to nine o’clock on Sundays. Her mother liked the job because it kept her away from most parties, but the parties Brandi had gone to before were thrown by the kind of kids who didn’t care about school nights to begin with.
Mostly she drank and doped the same amount she always had, only she did it more often alone now, before work. Wine coolers or beer, usually, because it was cheap. One time she’d had some peach schnapps but that had been a bad idea- she smelled strongly of it and was lucky her supervisor either did not care or thought it was a new perfume.
Okay I need people to understand it doesn’t matter if Arya’s pretty. I could dig through book evidence and theorize that she’ll be a “northern beauty” like Lyanna, that she’ll grow up to be a wild beautiful warrior queen, that the Kindly Man said she had a pretty face, etc, etc, and I get the appeal of that and I generally agree that’s what the text is telling us. But here’s the thing: Arya’s beauty or lack thereof doesn’t matter because 1) she’s 11 years old and 2) beauty is not an indicator of worth.
Brienne isn’t beautiful by any means and is one of the best written female characters in fantasy. The appeal of characters like Daenerys and Sansa is in how they’re characterized and how they navigate their respective plots, not in the fact that others find them attractive (also Dany is 16 and Sansa is 13 so like. people finding them attractive should be more unnerving than validating). When people bring up beauty while trying to criticize Arya’s qualities the response should be “who the fuck cares??” not “actually this preteen child could be just as gorgeous as this other preteen child.” To use beauty as any measurement of Arya’s value as a character in universe or out of it is so blatantly regressive I can’t believe I even have to say it.
Hizdahr’s royal imagery also stands in sharp contrast to Daenerys’. Where Daenerys’ throne was “a bench of polished ebony, smooth and simple”, Hizdahr sits on an “imposing [throne] of gilded wood” with its “tall [back] carved into the shape of” a dragon. Where Daenerys’ only royal ornament had been the dragon crown she had received in Qarth (which she had complained of being too heavy for her head after a while holding court), Hizdahr appears as king with both a crown on his head and a scepter in his hand (which I believe makes him the only character to hold a real scepter). Their thrones perfectly represent their differing approaches to ruling. Daenerys’ throne symbolized that she was there to do royal business, first and foremost; no one can sit comfortably on her seat (just as no one can sit comfortably on the Iron Throne), and its very simplicity and soberness draw attention away from her as a monarch, letting her focus on whatever issue she was presented. Hizdahr’s throne and royal ornaments, conversely, are an overblown statement on his own personal royal grandeur (or, at least, his view of his personal royal grandeur); he is king, and everyone has to know he is king, so he has to wear the costume of a king- throne, crown, scepter - to show everyone that he is king.
Actually, these two thrones remind me of two Targaryen crowns, Aegon III’s and Aegon IV’s. Aegon III’s crown was deliberately sober and simple - “a slender gold band with no ornament” - and reflected what Aegon III desired, a de-emphasis on the glory of the monarchy in favor of the betterment of the lives of the smallfolk and a focus on peace and stability (hence the reason Aegon V chose it for his crown). Aegon IV’s crown, by contrast, was “huge and heavy, red gold, each of its points a dragon’s head with gemstone eyes”; this was an ostentatious, grandiose crown, the biggest and most ornate of any Targaryen crown, and spoke to Aegon IV’s selfishness and desire for excess. Where Daenerys was focused not on her own ornamentation but rather on peace and welfare for her people, Hizdahr is focused on reminding everyone that he is the rightful King of Meereen; her ornamentation is plain and straightforward, his grandiose and self-serving.
