Cal and Jules relationship in First Kill

Cal and Jules relationship in Euphoria

Let’s talk about Euphoria season 2

The season is over but I’m not so I will try to put my emotions behind and try to analyze some hot topics of the season without the rush there’s it exist when the season is still going.

Elliot- He had no main purpose other then mess with Rue and Jules relationship just for the sake of having a men in a wlw relationship and I still hate this about his character. Don’t help that he had the depth of characters like Samantha, Faye, the vape girl, Aaron Jacobs… but the screen time of a main character. And what make those characters good was that they didn’t try to be more than they were, they didn’t have to forcibly steal a main character spotlight like Elliott did to Jules.

Sure, sometimes a character is so good and charismatic that they steal the show without much effort, that’s what happened with Lexi and Fez. Def not the case with Eliott and I still believe that he can even be a co protagonist or straight down take Rue’s place in the next seasons, Sam seen to really favs his character so i would be surprised if this happens

Maddy, Nate and Cassie - Yes we can say that this love triangle has its ups and downs, especially due to Nate’s messy writing this season but for the most part, it makes sense. Nate saw in Cassie someone who resemblance Jules and Cassie with her daddy issues, it makes sense and we can actually see this early in the season.

Jules - We don’t know for sure what happened in the backstage was the character who most suffer with the season messy and bad writing. Yes I’m aware that Kat only had like two lines but still, at least she had a great scene and at the end of the day we just laugh at wtf happened to her character. With Jules, sadly, things got a little more violent, some people are just waiting for any excuse to be transphobic assholes.

And yes Jules is allowed to make mistakes and all, but even if the idea was to make her think again about the “I’m no longer interested in men”, there is better ways to portray this confusion and self learning than the one the show choosed. The show really villanize her and don’t come with “oh but Rue is the narrator” bullshit because if we put that on the table we wouldn’t have seen Cal backstory, Maddy interactions with Samantha and a bunch of other scenes because there’s just no way of Rue to know all that.

Ash’s Death - We wasn’t a homicide maniac, that kid was smart and didn’t had to die like that. Want to kill him ? Fine, but at least give the kid a good death. Make him take a bullet for Fezco, since he go to war like a brother and that’s what a brother does, protect each other.

Lock himself in a bathroom in a suicidal action is so off character to the s1 smart kid that probably knew that he would be the one who would get a less sentence since he is a kid and probably the one that would bail Fez outta prison or be the one running the business while Fez serve his time in jail. And don’t come with me with the “oh but he was in a adrenaline rush and couldn’t control himself, he was just a kid” then Cal Jacobs should have been blasted back on the beginning of the season when he went to the store to confront Fez.

The thing is, with a lot of other characters this season the show forgot their consistency. Characters started to do stuff just because it feels convenient for the plot at that point of the story.

Euphoria season 2 - Review

Let’s start with the biggest flaws, in my opinion

1. The unfinished plots from s1.

Nate’s feelings towards Jules and his feelings about his sexuality? Who was that men speaking with Kat back in s1? Rue and Jules relationship?

And other ones that only appear in the second half of the season, like Cal’s disc that was with Maddy.

2. The absolute mess they did with most of the characters.

Rue was a extra in her own series because she spent half of the season being so over yet so boring, nothing like s1 Rue.

Jules, omg, she basically only really appear in the first half and it was in the worst possible. They really ruined her character. And it’s so bad, specially after the special where they really show us the depth of he character and for what ? For now in s2 they portray her shallow as a plate? This infuriated me.

Nate was just confusing. One episode he has Maddy at gun point, the other one he is “nice” and send his dad to jail like wtf? This is not complexity, this is just confusing. Oh, and for the first half of the season Nate was just the typical and boring toxic dude that every tv show have today

The same with Cal. Wtf happened that he became the Joker? Yes his backstory was beautiful and tragic, possibly the best one of all of the backstory intros but the rest…He hate Nate, then he love Nate, he don’t give a fuck to nothing anymore , he does give…it’s confusing.

Poor Kat. I don’t think I need to elaborate more with her. Ash became a terminador. I get it, he was tough since s1 but this season they dehumanize his character almost completely. “Oh but he was a kid acting on a stressful situation” it’s a fair point but s1 Ash was way smarter than this, s1 Ash would have do what Fez told him to do

Cassie poor Cassie. Her getting together with Nate was okay, fits her daddy issues and fits his unfinished business with Jules. But I dislike how the show keep mocking her, making her scream “I am crazier” and act all tough when in reality she was unable to face Maddy and just run away from her.

3. Eliott

The worst character so far. Terrible written, shallow, and it’s there just to be the men in between a wlw relationship. He stole Jules screentime and sink Rue’s arc.

It’s no coincidence that Cassie - Nate - Maddy stole the show this season since day 1

Rue could get the drugs with Laurie and her relationship problems with Jules could be because of the Rue’s addiction. Maybe Rue could catch Jules still fantasizing about Tyler since she was indeed in love with him and/or because of the trauma around the lie that was all that

They didn’t need Eliott to bring drama to the relationship

4. The pace, continuity and false leads?

Like I said, the first half of the show is just so weird. It felt off, I don’t know.

And you guys know about Laurie? She will forgive Rue like that?

What about Samantha’s intensions with Maddy? She was just being nice and a mentor figure or she had other intentions? If she didn’t, why that first scene between them had so much sexual tension and even some eroticism?

I really miss when Euphoria gave me anxiety instead of anger and frustration

But season 2 was all trash? No, let’s talk about the good parts

1. Sydney Sweeney

So now about the ups the season, I think the biggest one is Sidney Sweeney stealing the show. We all know Zendaya is amazing but I bet no one was expecting Sidney to still the show the way she did. Like I said, different from Rue, Cassie’s arc get our fully attention since the very beginning and keep us hooked until the last episode and Sidney really sold all of her scenes.

2. Maddy’s development

Yes, I love her development and how they humanize her character by letting her be vulnerable. Not that she didn’t had those moments in s1 but now it hit difference, at least for me. And allowing her to be nice to people and not the mean girl steriotype, again, I know we saw this is s1 but I think now in s2 the script really hit those points

3. Nate and Cassie relationship

I know a lot of people didn’t like but if makes sense. Cassie with her daddy issues and emotionally vulnerable because of the abortion and Nate not getting over Jules and being all single. He prey on Cassie, he saw in her the characteristics he liked in Jules: feminine, sweet, vulnerable. And she was also physically similar to Jules too. So makes sense that he would be will her to fill the void. And the portrait of this toxic relationship was actually done well, with him slowly putting her away from friends and family, making her more dependent on him.

And know this love triangle was something that a lot of people didn’t like but let’s be honest, it was the best part, this and Lexi and Fez.

4. A part from the script…

all the rest is 10/10. The cinematography, the acting, the soundtrack. I also like how a few things go full circle like Jules choosing herself and letting Rue in the s1 finale, and now Rue choosing herself and letting Jules behind.

So I think this season is a 6/10

I think one of the thing that bordered me the most is that Euphoria was a character driven story that was somewhat grounded in reality, yes we had our moments of just go with it and don’t elaborate to much because this or that wasn’t realistic but for the majority of s1, it was more “real” and character driven tramas.

Now in S2 they are full on the trafficking shit, flirting with crime type show style and tramas. Rue should not be walking around like nothing happened after the money she owes Laurie. The cops would not care that much about the death of a drug dealer. Rue doing parkour while she was feeling real sick due to abstinence to the point she couldn’t even stand straight. It’s like things don’t have consequences anymore, they choose which one will have.

Comments on Euphoria season 2 finale

-I like redemption arcs but for them to work, they need to be earned and not given. And I hate how they are just giving a redem to Nate.

The writing of his character this season was a mess. He only was that complex character from s1 after episode 5, and now this little redemption a few chapters after he threatened Maddy at gun point? Really?

I don’t care if he turn Cal to the cops, he still is the one who is pulling a gun to Maddy’s head and the one who is manipulating Cassie. He should first suffer the consequences of his actions and then actually change, at least that’s how a good redem is supposed to be (at least for me)

- I love how Maddy didn’t beat the shit outta Cassie because of a guy, Nate. She beat the shit outta Cassie because of Lexi.

-What a pathetic scene between Rue and Eliott.

Sure Eliott, your stupid song will make me forget that you went for Jules right after hear Rue’s say how much he loves her and how devastating would be losing her. Or forget how you gaslight and manipulate Jules into thinking that Rue didn’t feel attracted to her. Or even how you keep giving Rue drugs knowing that Jules was against it and didn’t know Rue was on drugs again and that this could separate them.

Fuck u Eliott. The worst character I have the displeasure to meet since Arthuro from La Casa del Papel (Money Heist)

-I don’t know why people think that in order to be dark, they need to kill someone. Ash death was unnecessary af. The whole thing about the police be so into find and capture Mouse murder feels so off, like , it’s not like Mouse was a rich white man for them to care that much about his death.

Anyway, for me Ash’s death just as Fezco’s (if he was the one to die) is just for the sake of shock value. They wanted this season to be darker than the first one and for that they thought they needed to kill someone. It felt forced, just shock value.

And to be honest, the writing is going down hill so bad that if Ash is still alive and that was, I don’t know, Fezco’s nightmare and they are both in prison, I wouldn’t be surprised

-And in the end, the fan theories were way better and way more interesting than what actually happened.

On Twitter some people are saying that Nate was molested by Cal because of that nightmare and I’m like, what?

People really underestimate what can traumatizing a child, like if watching those tapes wasn’t enough to fuck with Nate’s head. Or people really didn’t watch season 1 at all.

That nightmare was exactly what Nate saw in his dad’s tape. He seeing Maddy, Jules and then Cassie can be interpreted as his doubts about his own sexuality. And if he is really a gay in denial, that can also tell us that for being gay and young he may see those young man his dad had sex with in himself or himself in them. If this is the it, also tied with his last scene with Cal in s1, when Cal is on top of him, and Nate have a breakdown after see himself like that in the mirror.

fuck nate jacobs

herondalesunsetcurve:

adult cal, dominant daddy cal, is horrible, but i feel sobad for 18 year old cal, 18 year old cal who was still figuring out his sexuality, 18 year old cal who was attracted and maybe even in love with his best friend, 18 year old cal who was so happy that night that he finally kissed his best friend, and 18 year old cal who cried when he had everything that he wanted that was in arms reach, taken away from him because his girlfriend called him to tell him that she was pregnant.

this.
