One of the first days I forgot I was sick.
It’s really hard after a life-changing moment, good or bad. Being diagnosed with a chronic illness really threw me a curve ball. There was always a possibility of Lupus because my grandmas had it, but I never expected an IBD. I would wake up, a couple seconds would go by, then I’d remember. It felt like a nightmare.
This winter day had been a couple months after being diagnosed after a flare & bout with pancreatitis. My body was so weak from not being able to do anything. Literally, nothing. LOL. The muscle I had built from getting in a workout routine: GONE. C’mon muscle atrophy. Being in the beginning of most things are wild because it’s hard to slow down & really process since the emotions are running wild.
This was one of the first days I had enough energy to walk around the woods & down to grandma’s with the kids. It didn’t even feel like it was under 10 degrees. And normally I’m the boring one that just watches everyone have fun & take pictures. But they insisted I got down, & Kenzie snapped this pic of me. I don’t have many of myself, but this is a good one. A moment that reminded me it’ll get better.

Christmas at Grandma & Grandpa’s, 2018
There’s going to be a day where my grandparents’ kitchen will no longer be theirs. Whether it’s renovated, or someone else’s home entirely, it’s still hard to speak that sentence out loud. I only ever snapped pics around the kitchen to have, never in a serious portrait-y way. But I started looking at the “snapshots” differently. This kitchen WILL change at some point, beyond just new appliances. The counter I would sit & watch my grandpa make french toast. The counter where the holiday meals lay out. Their souls and energy won’t exist here. So I’m going to keep cherishing taking shots where most of the heads are cut off in most of the kitchen shots.
