Do you listen to podcasts? If so, do you have a favorite podcaster?
I’m not sure why I’d only occasionally listened to podcast episodes , but I’ve become a fan.
Two weeks ago, I connected with Rod & Inci Jones at @thoughtrowpodcast.️As we talked during the pre-interview, I felt like I’d known them forever. We discovered we had shared memories & experiences from the heyday of advertising & commercial photography. I realized they really are the podcast pros from Dover & was very impressed by their pre-production prep.
The interview went live today. I’ve included a link above, & I hope you’ll give it a listen. We talk about a lot of stuff, including life, social media & Instagram. I also urge you to follow the art, writing ✍️& interviews you’ll find on @rodjonesartist & @incijonesartist. They’re lovely & talented people. ❤️
During the interview, I mention my grandmother twice. I loved her the best of all. In the Polaroid picture above from around 1990, I’m wearing a Paul McCartney T-shirt —a souvenir of seeing him perform during the Seattle stop of his world tour. It was fun to see Paul & my grandma in one photo because I told Rod & Inci that I’d planned to marry Paul when I grew up!
Speaking of grandparents, a week ago Wednesday, my husband & I officially joined the club. We are thrilled! We haven’t yet met our twin granddaughters in person, but I’m planning to meet them next week feel SUPER excited about it!
I think my grandmother would be proud of me & the person I became. ❤️ She’s been gone for a long time & she still inspires me.

How To Get Started on Building Your Family Tree Without Help From Elders
If you are like me, and do not have many elder family members to turn to for help in discovering your family history, here are a couple of things you can do to get yourself started.
- Talk to siblings and cousins. Ask them for anything they remember, names, dates, addresses, cities, church/places of worship, schools, anything they can remember will be helpful.
- Try and find any old objects: photos, papers, baby books, baptism, bible records-sometimes there is useful information written on the back of old photos and keepsakes such as dates, names, places.
- Start charting it out. Write down what you know. Start a free family tree online. Or just get a piece of paper and a pen and start charting out what you already know so that you can transition that to an online tree or a free template downloaded from online.
- What if you don’t have any siblings/cousins? If you don’t have any siblings or cousins, at least any that you are comfortable talking to, use yourself as a resource. What do you remember? Do you remember a last name, your grandmothers maiden name? A place your aunt or uncle may have lived with your grandparents? What church did they attend? Was it local? Even the most smallest thing that you can remember could be important.
- Perhaps turn to the local genealogy society/group in your hometown, or your parents/grandparents hometown. Local groups can be a most valuable resource.
The beginning is usually the hardest, but use what you know, use these steps as a mini guide, and get started. Remember, you can be your own most valuable resource.
I’m curious, you guys tell me how you distinguish between your two sets of grandparents when speaking (or how you did it as a kid). Was it always Grandma [Lastname] or Grandpa [Firstname], or did one or both sets of grandparents have nicknames? (Like Nana or Papa.)
Don’t commission me to draw real people, kids. The results are a hot mess.
Christmas gift for my grandparents in the Philippines, who I’m finally spending time with in their home for the first time in over a decade. It feels good to be back with the family in their element … I only wish I was better at drawing portraits!

Chan Jae Lee, a 75-year-old man from Korea who now lives in Brazil, misses his three grandsons terribly. Two live in South Korea, and one in New York. To stay connected with their lives, he learnt how to use Instagram. Now he draws them a picture every day, and he’s racked up 180,000 followers in the process.
