Yesterday a small glitch caused the Duolingo servers to let everyone into all the courses Duolingo has been working on, even the ones still in the incubator! You could try them like any other normal course.
It even has Conlangs like Lolcat, Zombie, Dothraki, and more

Does anyone know where I can look up Sino-Korean words? I remember the existence of a website where you could compare words of Chinese origin (characters and pronunciation) across Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese, as well as different Chinese languages…I know I’m not making it up because I saw a guy give a talk on it, but for the life of me I cannot find it.
Does anyone have any better resources? Or know oohow to look up the hanja of a Korean word? Asking because it would help hugely in remembering the Korean words if I could tell which Chinese word they were related to.
Sometimes it’s very obvious, but sometimes there’s enough sound change + the word is fairly archaic so I would like to be certain. Any help appreciated!
Alright, my irl language friends came through and remembered the name of the app I was thinking about! It’s called CJKV Dict and supports searches in English, various romanisation systems and combinations of simplified/traditional/tone marks/no tone marks input!
Fewer than 500 have downloaded it: an absolute crime.
Let’s say I want to search for the characters for this Korean word. I type in the romanisation, and it shows the characters to me! I can also toggle between Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese and looking more closely at individual characters.
I can also search in English for a given word, and see what comes up. Here I’ve toggled to the Vietnamese page - if I want to see what each individual character means I can click on it.
Most brilliantly, the app is completely accepting of different variants and treats them as the same word - which many dictionaries don’t. So I could type a simplified character, multiple Chinese traditional forms or the Japanese or Korean form and end up with the same outcome. Amazing!!
If I click on any individual character, I can see how it is pronounced across Mandarin, Cantonese, Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese! I can also see different variants of the same character used.
And…
You can also change what romanisation you want in settings, for example if you want zhuyin and not pinyin.
And the best part? It’s 100% free. Go and spread the word my children!!! Fly!!!!
2022 Movie Challenge 6/24: 倩女幽魂/A Chinese Ghost Story

Premise:
Ning Choi-san, a timid and hapless debt collector, goes to a rural town to collect a debt but is unsuccessful. Without money to pay for an inn, he takes shelter in a haunted temple on the outskirts of town. During the night, he meets a beautiful woman, Nip Siu-sin and falls in love with her. However, a local Daoist priest, Yin Chik-ha, warns him that she is a ghost, and ghosts can mean nothing good for the mortal world…
My Thoughts:
This movie was a delight to watch! It has everything: steamy ghost sex, awesome 1980s practical effects, and a Daoist rap with some martial arts-breakdancing. In all seriousness, I found this movie funny, sweet and romantic, though the final fight scenes dragged on a bit for my tastes.
* I won’t be listing the difficulty for this movie because I don’t speak Cantonese

This movie crosses off my Hong Kong and Cantonese squares! I’m also counting it as a horror movie even though it’s not particularly scary because I realized I’m too much of a coward to watch an unfamiliar horror movie alone lol. Finally, I’m giving this a half cross for being from the ‘80s but not about the '80s.
