Inside the Chernobyl exclusion zone in 360 degree views by Sean Gallup

Rusting medical equipment stands in a room in the crumbling former hospital on April 9, 2016 in Pripyat, Ukraine. Pripyat, built in the 1970s as a model Soviet city to house the workers and families of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, now stands abandoned inside the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, a restricted zone contaminated by radiation from the 1986 meltdown of reactor number four at the nearby Chernobyl plant in the world’s worst civilian nuclear accident that spewed radiaoactive fallout across the globe. Authorities evacuated approximately 43,000 people from Pripyat in the days following the disaster and the city, with its high-rise apartment buildings, hospital, shops, schools, restaurants, cultural center and sports facilities, has remained a ghost-town ever since. The world will soon commemorate the 30th anniversary of the April 26, 1986 Chernobyl disaster. (Photos by Sean Gallup/Getty Images)

The Chernobyl Savior

Thought I might share two photos of copies of the Chernobyl Savior icon (one printed on canvas made in Moscow framed inkiot, the other a small print from Ukraine). A very unique orthodox icon in its own right, reflecting more modern, industrialised and globalised worries, and probably the first instance of regular people- nurses, firefighters, doctors, pilots, soldiers and volunteers- joining in the depiction of host of saints due to their sacrifice. Created by artist Vladimir Goretsky in cooperation with Yuri Andreev (CNPP engineer) and blessed in 2003. Of interest is the presence of Wormwood (star/angel), associated with tragedy:
“And the name of the star is called Wormwood:
and the third part of the waters became wormwood;
and many men died of the waters,
because they were made bitter.”
(The Book of Revelation 8:11)
and the The Partisan’s Tree, in the shape of both cross and tryzub, Ukrainian coat of arms, the tree serving as a hanging spot during WWII, now unfortunately collapsed and rotting away. Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant visible in the desolate background.

Hotel Polissia.

Academia, quadra, tudo destruido.

“What is the cost of lies? It’s not that we’ll mistake them for the truth. The real danger is that if we hear enough lies, then we no longer recognize the truth at all. What can we do then? What else is left but to abandon even the hope of truth and content ourselves instead with stories? In these stories, it doesn’t matter who the heroes are. All we want to know is: who is to blame? […] What does matter is that, to them, justice was done. Because, you see, to them a just world is a sane world. There was nothing sane about Chernobyl. What happened there, what happened after, even the good we did, all of it… all of it… madness. Well, I’ve given you everything I know. They’ll deny it, of course. They always do. I know you’ll try your best.”  - Chernobyl(2019) dir. Johan Renck

roominthecastle:

How much time? Maybe a year. They call it a… they call it a “long illness.” It doesn’t seem very long to me. I know you told me, and I believed you. But time passed, and I thought it wouldn’t happen to me. I wasted it. I wasted it all for nothing. For nothing?Do you remember that morning when I first called you, how unconcerned I was? I don’t believe much that comes out of the Kremlin, but when they told me they were putting me in charge of the cleanup and they said it wasn’t serious, I believed them. You know why? Because they put you in charge.Yeah. I’m an inconsequential man, Valery. That’s all I’ve ever been. I hoped that one day I would matter, but I didn’t. I just stood next to people who did. There are other scientists like me. Any one of them could have done what I did. But you… Everything we asked for, everything we needed – men, material, lunar rovers. Who else could have done these things? They heard me, but they listened to you. Of all the ministers and all the deputies… entire congregation of obedient fools… they mistakenly sent the one good man. For god’s sake, Boris, you were the one who mattered most.

This variation of Kraz, heavy truck created specifically for cleaning up Chernobyl mess, was created in 20 days and had a fully lead cabin. None of them of course made back to clean territories. Overall, 18 of these trucks were made in 1986.

Growing up in the 1970s and 80s amidst a plethora of media threatening a grim dystopian future, my generation’s minds were prepped with facing the fallout of nuclear disaster in films ranging from ‘Beneath the Planet of the Apes’ to ‘Threads’ to ‘When the Wind Blows’ and then on Saturday 26th April 1986 the wormwood star fell and…
