People have been asking me a bit about clays lately so I thought I’d make a post about the clays I use. This is by no means an exhaustive list of clays. Each category could have a whole post by itself! These are just the ones I use most often and usually have on-hand.
Polymer clays:
These clays are easy to work with and stay soft until you bake them in the oven.
Sculpey, Super Sculpey, Sculpey III
Probably the most well-known of the polymer clays, it is inexpensive and readily available. It’s very soft and easy to condition (some clays require lots of initial kneading to warm it up before use.) Once baked it can be easily cut and sanded, though it can be brittle or crumbly. It should not be used for sculptures with very fine, delicate details, especially if they are going to be exposed to heavy abuse. Sculpey is also very heavy and not ideal for large costume props. The best use of sculpey is to first build an armature out of aluminum foil and wire and just use the sculpey as a coating. If it is more than about ¼"-½" thick it can develop cracks after baking.
The Hand
the man with the backward hand—this wasn’t the only thing backwards about him, he ate soup with a fork and bread with a spoon, spoke in tongues (resembling pig latin) only recognized a moment too soon, walked on his hands in a perennial handstand, and after a long day of work he’d curl up underneath his bed, comforted by the floorboard beneath his head.
