MORE-MODEST PLUMP BUSH-CRICKET
(Isophya modestior)

Savić, D.2014.

I’m not actually sure why the more-modest plump bush-cricket (I swear that sounds even more ridiculous every time I write it) was given the name, but you can have a guess by checking out the other members Isophyagenus. Commonly known as the plump bush-crickets (possibly because of their rather short and rotund morphology compared to other bush-crickets), the genus currently contains 39 species according to the IUCN, including the modest plump bush-cricket (Isophya modesta). Since it’s pretty unlikely that these two species are just particularly polite, we can assume that they were probably named for their relative inconspicuousness; especially to the showy plump bush-cricket (Isophya speciosa) which (as you can see for yourself) certainly has a lot more going on, but I think both our modest plump-bush crickets look lovely just as they are.

The Cricket

My exam works were to center around Joel Ben Izzys book, ’ The Beggar King and the Secret of Happiness: A True Story ’,  the book tells his journey of losing and the return of his voice as a storyteller. Within his story he tells short stories with morals and links them to happenings in his own life.

These Lineare drawings are based on 1 of those stories called The Cricket, the story folows a cricket, who tries his whole life to jump to the moon. All the other crickets laugh about him in the beginning, but by the time of his death he has become a legend to the crickets because he never gave up, it is even believed that his face can be seen in the shadow side of the moon.
I found the story endearing!

Visualizing animal sounds with the help of mathematics and computer programming is how engineer, Mark Fisher, created these beautiful, kaleidoscopic images from the songs of dolphins, whales, birds and insects. Raven and I turned on one of our young clients to these fractal-like images as inspiration for her tattoo soulprint of dolphin and owl energy.

1. White Beaked Dolphin 2. Atlantic Spotted Dolphin 3. False Killer Whale 4. Spectacled Owl 5. Blue Whale 6. Humpback Whale 7. Minke Whale 8. Cricket
