One of my favorite parts about working with teens is their fearless expression. The consequence doesn’t seem as real to a kid. As adults we we’re quick to register that second thought. I try not to teach with much censorship. I let the students be themselves. I do try to instill an idea of professionalism. I ask them to consider their audience, and environment. We have a phrase in my classrooms, “Keep it classy.”. While they learn professionalism, they are also given opportunity to speak for themselves. I love the days when we are all working together in the studio setting, creating, and having those heavy conversations about life. The art slowly starts to find a voice through each student’s work when they are allowed their freedom.
This next show has a lot of unique stories to tell through their visuals. Come check it out this Thursday from 5:30-7:30 at @calsurf_88. Blank Slate- A Student Skateboard Art Exhibition.
This Thursday night, please come out and support the students! Blank Slate- A Student Skateboard Art Exhibition open Thursday, Jan. 16th 5:30-7:30 at @calsurf_88!
Made this Poké bowl-ish thing tonight. Tossed ahi tuna in lime juice, chili pepper infused olive oil, salt, and light soy. Sushi rice, peppers, parsley.
It takes a TON of money to launch a new venture. I had originally wanted to create an entire art exhibition based on these culinary influenced pieces, then use the sales as a fundraiser for @stageculinary. Unfortunately the original gallery didn’t work out, so…
Here’s where we’re at… we have had an amazing attorney who Pro Bono set up all of our non profit status for Stage Culinary/DoRadThings. (@doradthingsco). Once this paperwork is finalized and our accounts are set up we can begin creating our events and fundraisers, then partnering with local restaurants and chefs on our student projects. All of it costs significant seed $$$. I will be selling all of the paintings I did for this show independently and putting those proceeds towards the launch of our new non profit DoRadThings/Stage Culinary. By purchasing any of these pieces you will be a founding donor and put on a very select list of partners and VIPs to our next Stage Culinary dinner. I try to teach kids in a way that shows them how to take their talents and put them to work. Not just for their own wallets, but taking your talents and making them larger than even your own life. My entire career has been built off the mediocre ability to make art. To me I’ve never dreamt of painting the next Mona Lisa, I’ve dreamt of how much impact my paintings can have on the world around me. This painting is a fun play on humor, and Pop Art. I tried to incorporate some urban elements, along with classic technique, and a bit of graffuturism. It’s 40x30 on gallery depth canvas (1.5inch deep), painted with oils, acrylic, @montanacans, @sharpie, and charcoal. It’s a pretty big piece, good painting above a couch or in a large kitchen. $1,250.00 with proceeds going toward @stageculinary. #doradthings #stageculinary #graffuturism #rivardart #popart #stilllife #painting #urbancontemporaryart #urbancontemporary #modernart #nonprofit #makeitcount #bananaart #banana #bananapeel https://www.instagram.com/p/B7Gy5H8lVPK/?igshid=1gg6gzbnte87g
It takes a TON of money to launch a new venture. I had originally wanted to create an entire art exhibition based on these culinary influenced pieces, then use the sales as a fundraiser for @stageculinary. Unfortunately the original gallery situation turned out to be incompetent as most business in the “art world” tends to be, so I’ll take the old faithful route of just relying on myself to get the job done.

This painting is a play on the classic still life style. I tried to incorporate some urban elements, along with classic technique, and a bit of graffuturism. This painting was a very instrumental shift in my painting style. The negative space and gritty, yet sharp lines and contrast gave me a jolt I hadn’t had in awhile to create. Sad to see her go this morning off to her new home. Congrats @samvatan96 on your new addition! Sam’s purchase is a direct contribution to @stageculinary & @doradthingsco. His purchase supports our mission of incredible and ambitious educational experiences for the youth in our communities. Love this painting. Happy Holidays or whatever you’re into everyone. Put those talents to work in 2020.
Want to support art AND education? My next show is going to be all influenced by my experiences in the Food & Beverage world and as a cooking enthusiast. Proceeds from all of the art I make for this show will go to help develop our new Non Profits @doradthingsco and @stageculinary. By purchasing my art you are now also directly supporting educational projects for the youth of our communities. Putting talent to work. This painting is available for purchase today. 30x40.
Amazing ideas are born from a blank slate. This was the 3rd version of the Bourdain boards. A simple black & white version.
“This represents so many things to me. The crown is a representation of Max’s crown from Where the Wild Things Are, done in an almost Basquiat-esque style. Basquiat was known for his heavy use of crowns and I feel like Bourdain has earned his. This photo of Bourdain is so perfect in my mind (I’m still trying to figure out who the original photographer is???). I made these for me, not really as great art statement, but because I wanted to make them for my own home (I’ve made three total.). I love the youthful nature of the Max crown, coupled with the smirk and confident gesture. The fact Bourdain was in his forties before he found his first major success is incredibly inspiring. Throw in a nod to the high brow art world and this board hits all the right vibes.” #bourdain #anthonybourdain #basquiat #wherethewildthingsare #mauricesendak #max #doradthings #rivardart #sharpie #sharpieart #sharpieartist #skateboardart #skateboardartist #skateboardartwork #urbancontemporary #urbancontemporaryart #lowbrowart #lowbrow #lowbrowartist #modernart #popart #art #illustration #artwork (at Minneapolis, Minnesota) https://www.instagram.com/p/B5qHsRplIm4/?igshid=5gyhdgwh9hu7

Scenes from the crib/pt. Actually kind of enjoyed this style of painting. The skulls a played out subject matter, but it was fun to make. Caked on oil paints with heavy texture and spray paint.
I don’t even particularly like skull art. Just felt like painting with some heavy oils and spray paint. Got a new pallet knife I wanted to mess around with and this is the result. Painted over an old piece, about a 20 minute study painting. It kinda scares me. #doradthings #oilpainting #skateboardart #skateboardartist #mixedmedia #montanacans #skull #skullart (at Minneapolis, Minnesota) https://www.instagram.com/p/B5WTwahlp-j/?igshid=1paeptujzoa3g
Found this guy at very bottom of the stack this morning while doing some inventory of boards. This was probably one of the earlier experiments with oils. You have have to make a lot of garbage art before make anything decent… I’ve made landfills of terrible art. #skateboardart #doradthings #oilpainting #badart (at Minneapolis, Minnesota) https://www.instagram.com/p/B5DdCvJFxEb/?igshid=510cyiqs9boe

You don’t have to agree with every single thing our military does, but when you live in the United States of America your life is inarguably safer because of those that serve. I’m honored to call the Air Force my partner. I’ve visited 23 Air Force bases around the world and every hand I’ve shook is a lesson in gratitude. I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have been given a unique view into the world of our service members and to see the work they do, along with the life changes their families endure for it, is a remarkable gift to the rest of us. Hats off to you Veterans. #doradthings #veteransday #airforce (at Minneapolis, Minnesota) https://www.instagram.com/p/B4vWYGJFL6U/?igshid=qwd703neipk8
Just wrapped up my final library stop of the year. I toured 28 libraries across the state of Minnesota in 2019. Bringing over 300 kids skateboards and @sharpie’s. I love my job.
I love cooking like I love art. I’m a chump compared to the pros but I get the same satisfaction out of the process. So glad to have @stageculinary and brands like @freakflagfoods to fuel my passions beyond the storyline… being artist is a treat, being an innovator is a responsibility, being full is a gift, being change is the honor. #doradthings #stageculinary #flyyourfreakflag (at Minneapolis, Minnesota) https://www.instagram.com/p/B4i_-jyFUsZ/?igshid=1slrvhc598q2e
Here is a picture of me enjoying a Yuengling Lager in Gary McCalla’s study at his home…. surrounded by millions and millions of dollars in art while wearing a flannel shirt and dirty skate shoes. Ain’t life funny? Thanks for having us Gary… #doradthings (at San Marco) https://www.instagram.com/p/B37-ODKlS0s/?igshid=i1byjkmuex80
Personal milestone accomplished: 50th round of the year! What a season!
It’s not lost on me how fortunate I am. Though it was only doable on account of some very unfortunate circumstances, but nonetheless, I’ll probably never have the opportunity to cross the 50 round mark again in my lifetime… To do it at 38, I’m blessed. Thanks to @twincitiesgolf for creating the Public Country Club and all participating courses.
It all starts with an idea. This is Bryce, a student of mine at Edison High School in NE Minneapolis drawing skateboard templates.
Ever wanted to design your own skateboard from scratch? I do open Studio Sessions at @calsurf_88 once monthly. The next session is November 2, 1-4pm. Come on down and create a skateboard with me in the gallery! $60 gets you access to all of my art supplies, your own skateboard deck, a full pack of @sharpie’s, these skateboard design templates, and one on one instruction with me. Great afternoon activity for your kids and their friends, or a rad thing to do as a parent with your child! All kids under 18 are also invited to participate in the upcoming student skateboard art show.
Hoodie sale goes until Friday. New Do Rad Things black classic pullovers. These hoodies are perfect, I haven’t taken mine off for three weeks. Link in bio.
Night walks. This is why I love the city. Any given moment you can just step outside and walk for miles through a gallery of gritty to glamor. Clears the mind, move your feet if your head won’t stop.
