After a November full of horse stories my Instagram is back to sporadic regularly scheduled programming. I don’t really do just one thing at a time so while I was having lots of nostalgic horse feelings I was also writing and drawing and producing a new comic! No Shade of Green: Meditations on Empathy is about my less than stellar history of caring for plants and sometimes people. Tomorrow I head out to set up the first installation of The Party Tent. I am looking forward to this and have enjoyed the prep work. Nearly 100 indigo dyed clothing items are ready to be given away (which was my goal), the art supplies for the community project situated, signs created, and lists checked off.
This is the third road trip/camping adventure of the summer, not counting trips to the cabin. I have a lot to catch up on documenting, including Aunt Stephie’s Art + Adventure Camp that I have been hosting for my nieces and the new works that are in progress. Works that I want to share and yes, talk about it, experience with others in a different setting; create dialogue prompted by the pieces.
Alright. Deep breath. You got this, Stephie. All you have to do is show up.
As I wrote on the back, I had been holding on to this postcard I got in London for 17 years, over half my life, and decided it was time to send it on. When I think of Em J, I think of her on the coasts of England so she seemed an appropriate recipient.

A collaborative art book in which my friend and I add, subtract, and continue evolving the layers and then pass it back to the other. We use a lot of found items, clippings, small surprises in secret pockets, and whatever we feel.

I am still trying to figure out how I can layer the videos like I did with an older version of the iMovie program, however maybe it’s time to try a new program with more options. My mom has been teaching herself to create videos for her work using different equipment; she recently purchased a green screen so I am looking forward to experimenting with that, especially with the fast motion dance videos I have recently discovered.
Summer is already in full swing and it’s not even officially Summer until next week.
Groovin’ on the summer time train: art, the beach, communion dancing, sunshine, Aunt Stephie’s Summer Art + Adventure Camp, tiny cabin visits, camping trip to milwaukee, jokes, friend adventures, grill outs, bike rides, The Party Tent at Even Furthur, picnics, patios, gardening, painting, and mostly lots of living in the outdoors.

One of my favorite parts about working with teens is their fearless expression. The consequence doesn’t seem as real to a kid. As adults we we’re quick to register that second thought. I try not to teach with much censorship. I let the students be themselves. I do try to instill an idea of professionalism. I ask them to consider their audience, and environment. We have a phrase in my classrooms, “Keep it classy.”. While they learn professionalism, they are also given opportunity to speak for themselves. I love the days when we are all working together in the studio setting, creating, and having those heavy conversations about life. The art slowly starts to find a voice through each student’s work when they are allowed their freedom.
