My Christmas Cactus surprised me with another flower!!!!

This was the Schlumbergera bridgesii I bought and immediately had to transplant because I didn’t have a pot big enough, and all the blooms fell off right away before they all opened. I’m so glad this one likes this spot on my windowsill, and I’m ESPECIALLY glad that it enjoys being in a pot with no holes on the bottom. I feel very validated. (I HATE when pots have to have a plastic liner pot inside them.)

I’ve had success multiple times with keeping hole-less pots, but online people always freak out when they see it happen unsuccessfully. I know my room’s temperature and air humidity well enough to know how to water these. (I actually water this Christmas Cactus like every other day! This window gets very hot, and paired with my space heater usage, it NEEDS a few drops to keep a consistent atmosphere.)

Anyway, I’m very happy to see this neon pink flower open up. The rest of my Christmas Cactus pieces all got planted into hanging planters above my vanity recently (I got sick of having too many small pots of them taking up so much space), so hopefully hy the time they grow a bit more, they’ll all drape some flowers down the sides for me.

(Also, please ignore the corner of failed moss rehydration in the last pic… I’m actually gonna add a different moss and let that grow on this stuff instead of try to rehydrate the dried stuff.)

I’m filling the void in my life with plants…

New orchids, adorable mini phalaenopsis, and a vERY FRAGRANT ZYGOPETALUM THAT I DIDN’T KNOW WAS GONNA BE FRAGRANT UNTIL I GOT IT (I had no idea what kind of orchid it was, I was just excited because I found a Trader Joe’s gift card in my wallet that was unused)… pLUS A VARIEGATED MINI ROSE!!!! I don’t think I’ve EVER seen a variegated rose, mini or not… even if the variegation doesn’t stay, like uh… It’s still a mini rose!! And cute as hell!!

When I was a kid I got to pick one rosebush from the nursery, so I picked a Nicole Rose which is white center with neon pink petal tips and that was the extent of colour variation I’ve seen - with just the tips a different colour. So, I’m super excited to make room for this rose indoors (I had no idea they’d actually stay mini?? According to what I saw online…)

I’m so excited tho like my room is a jungle right now, I just got my first Monstera too, and have a BOP (it’s slowly unfurling a new leaf rn!!), and 2 orchids, (nOW 4 ORCHIDS!) Plus the other big stuff I have, poinsettias, dracaenas, hibiscus. Who knew I had it in me to shake off my black thumb to keep all these plants alive and making my Room feel less like a Doom. (Well, it’s a work in progress at least… myself and my room, I mean.)

Now I just gotta keep at the organizing and cleaning my room when chronic illness and mental illness aren’t kicking my ass.

You ever see a fern with spores this big???? ( Trypophobia warning? )

I went to cat-sit for a few days and got to appreciate my grandma’s plants. If I didn’t have a mold problem in my room at home, I’d have taken some spores to try and propagate this beast, but I’m still struggling to keep my Venus Maidenhair Fern single stem prop alive, and the rhizomes I took of my aunt’s Boston Fern haven’t grown anything…. Ferns don’t like me yet.

My grandma’s Anthurium’s anther is also making some preem trypo content here. Why is it bubbling up like that? My mom also has an Anthurium, but is keeping it locked away in our dark dining room. They’re such cool plants, like they look like a lily, but they’re epiphytic like orchids and airplants, so no wonder they’re used in fancy arrangements all the time.

Plus, here’s one of the kitties I cat-sat. He was a stinker that barfed on his mom’s computer desk the day she was coming back home. I hate that! But love the Stinker.

Fern spores don’t seem to trigger my aerophobia too much, thankfully.

Custom pots for my two orchids!!

They’re mini Phalaenopsis orchids, I’m pretty sure I got one from Trader Joe’s and the other from Home Depot? The first one I got immediately dropped the blooms within a week of being in my hot room lol. The other stayed blooming for a while. I’m only now realising I didn’t photograph the blooms. But they’re both a very similar white and purple-pink.

Both of my orchids stopped blooming, but one still kept a green stem and is holding onto its dried blooms! The other started growing aerial roots, so I had to repot them, and wanted to make pots that would match the colour of their blooms.

Both were horribly cramped in their original pots, so I think they will enjoy not having a cache-pot prison now. (I hate cache pots so much!) The new medium is the freshened up with sphagnum moss and orchid bark layers.

My mom’s orchid in the back is a regular Phalaenopsis orchid (she doesn’t remember the colour, but it’s a few years old) and it was in desperate need of a repot. When I went to shake out the old medium, I found out it was sitting in like 1inch of water no moss, only bark. Yuck. So I freshened her up, put her in an old crock thing with an elevated cache pot (so no more sitting in water if it gets too much), got a full leaf wipe dusting-off, and currently (almost 2 weeks later), she looks AMAZING. And has THREE new flower shoots growing off the two main shoots! I can’t wait to see what colour this one will be, I wasn’t here when my mom first bought it.

Spanish moss (Tillandsia usneoides) is such a gorgeous addition to any vertical space and the best thing is that you don’t need soil or a pot.

This is an epiphyte, which means they grow on tree trucks or any surface that provides nutrients from the moisture, water and or air or the surface itself (like the tree trunks).

I’ve propagated twice now and they are all growing. I keep them in our shower as they get filtered light and humidity from our hot showers.

Questions? Ask them away?

Happy Lunar Year! 祝大家新年快樂!虎年大吉!

( Australia ) grown in a 10" diameter bulb pan
°°°
Did you know many orchids are succulents? We use this term loosely to describe many plants but most people don’t realize it’s not a specific group of plants from any particular area, but a descriptive term used for plants that have evolved swollen or fleshy parts to survive periods of drought or seasonally dry months (a perfect example are the Dendrobiums of Australia). Think about your orchids the psuedobulbs of your Oncidiums and Cymbidiums, the swollen canes of the Dendrobiums, the terete leaves of the Brassavolas and even the fleshy leaves of some Phalaenopsis are all for water preservation, a classic defining feature of a succulent

Dendrobium Frosty Dawn (Dawn Maree x Lime Frost)
°°°
A complex hybrid within the hirsute (or Formosan) section of Dendrobium. This hybrid can produce variable flowers, but most are a shade of creamy-green with contrasting red/orange lip. Flowers tend to open lighter in color with the lip intensifying with age. Like many hybrids with Dendrobium christyanum heritage, flowers can be sweetly fragrant in the morning

1. concerned with beauty or the appreciation of beauty.
2. a set of principles underlying and guiding the work of a particular artist or artistic movement
°°°
Like it or not, we are all drawn to aesthetic beauty. Turn your nose up at the frivolity of a society driven by it and you’ll still fall for its trap. We have to face it, it’s a biological construct of being human Those of us who are all “into” the natural world, or have an appreciation for design in any realm- art, architecture, fashion, music, etc are suckers for it. Even plants understand this. This is exactly how they survive really. They understand that a combination of shape, color, texture, pattern and fragrance will get their flowers pollinated by pollinators attracted to their “aesthetic beauty” therefore pollinating their blooms and ensuring the next generation. But you ask “I’m a human growing an orchid out of its natural setting does this really apply to me?”
°°°
Let’s take this Orchid- Neofinetia falcata ‘Oganamaru’. I mounted this on a piece of rough teak about 5 years ago and it’s grown quite well. I have also grown tillandsia usenoides (Spanish moss) around its mount in root system to help with humidity. Why do I like this so much? Is it the slab of wood I chose to grow it on? It would have grown just as well in a plastic basket right? But to me it wouldn’t look the same I like this because as an epiphyte it looks more natural growing on a piece of wood and in turn seems more “aesthetically pleasing”

Dendobium apphyllum is native to Southeast Asia and another example of a monsoonal climate orchid that requires a dry winter rest to insure springtime flowering
°°°
It belongs to a small group of related species that have some similar attributes in flower shape and morphology but look very distinct vegetatively. Some refer to it as synonymous with Den. peirardii and Den. cucullatum but I have grown all species in the group and I prefer to keep my tags separate since they’re very easily distinguished even out of bloom!⠀
°°°⠀
This specimen is growing in a 5” plastic pot and is approximately 6’ long. It has grown a few “keikis” (baby plantlets) from it’s previous year’s canes (these are seen lower on the canes). These are an identicle clone of the mother plant and can be removed and repotted on their own once they reach adequate size. I prefer to keep them on for 1 to 2 years of growth and then take them off when the orchid is repotted. Did you notice the leaves of the Plebodium aureum (Blue Star Fern) that has started growing in its pot? These can be a nuisance crowding out the Orchid and using up valuable water and fertilizer and should definitely be removed when given the chance

Can you believe this orchid hasn’t been watered since December 1, 2018? (Today is 2/26/19)⠀

Many orchids grow in locations which experience extreme seasonal dryness In fact, there are many thousands of orchids which inhabit areas that experience tropical monsoonal climates which can go many weeks without any rainfall. A great example of this are the Himalayas and it’s plant rich mountains and valleys. Dendrobium aggregatum grows in an area of extreme wetness during the growing season (Spring and Summer) and gradually increasing dryness in the Fall, followed by a period of cooler temperatures and complete dryness in the Winter⠀
°°°⠀
Understanding seasonal variation like this will help us mimic these seasonal patterns to keep our plants healthy and happy and in turn get wonderful displays of color like this ☀️⠀

Angraecum Crestwood (sesquipedale x Vietchii) ⭐⭐⭐definitely one of our favorite Angraecum hybrids and an excellent example of two step breeding. Two step breeding is when the desired outcome takes two generations to achieve. In this case, the primary hybrid Vietchii (sesquipedale x superbum) which is nice, but many times results in twisted blooms since one of the parents has non-resupinate flowers, was crossed back to sesquipedale resulting in even larger resupinate flowers
°
(Note: resupinate is a term used for “upright” flowers in which the lip is downward in appearance, most orchids are resupinent. Non-resupinate is when the lip of the flower is upward appearing as if the flower is upside down)

No foliage? No problem
°
Many of the orchids we grow are deciduous, or semi-deciduous. This means they shed their foliage at certain times of the year, usually in relation to seasonal dryness in their natural habitat (many orchids experience a tropical monsoonal climate)
°
By shedding leaves, and thereby reducing the amount of plant “surface”, water is preserved in thicker or succulent parts of the Orchid (usually canes or pseudobulbs) and a dormancy begins. During this. Water should be reduced significantly, watering only if you see noticeable shriveling in the bulbs
°
New foliage will begin to grow in the spring triggered by warmer, brighter days and more rainfall and usually in conjunction with beautiful flowers
