I had the opportunity to make an ident for the new MTV International rebrand. The prompt was “FEAR”, and I made a strange thing about a shocking birth. Hope you like it!   A giant shoutout as usual Skillbard who did an amazing job on the music and sound design.

Tumblr has flagged this post - not sure if it’s because of the natural birthing process depicted, or the unnatural anime baby abomination (with visible nipples) - either way, feel free to follow me on TwitterorInstagram, where I mainly post.

These are a few of pieces of my art I have here in my gallery that have been flagged today.

This, this is the kind of things people are dealing with in the wake of Tumblr’s new rules. It’s not about a “better” experience for the users. Tumblr has ignored bots and problems for years. It’s not even about porn or nudity. It’s about a blanket algorithm flagging any and all things (robots, rooms, food, words, anything, etc.) in order to control content to help advertisers (and the like) to feel “safe” giving $money$ to Tumblr.

Like other sites, they allowed users to make and share content to grow the site and now that they are big enough they want to cater to the cash not the user.

So users, all users, will have to jump through more hoops to share their content to reach a shrinking audience. My pics above are now on “review”. I had to find the flagged images (that have been up for months, maybe a year or more), I had to ask for a review of the image, I have to wait and see what happens next.

This new policy is not about “adult content”, that’s just a way to frame it to make it sound like a reasonable thing to the people with cash Tumblr is trying to make happy. It’s a blanket algorithm for everyone posting here. It’s all content, it’s control, it’s cash.

But you don’t have to take my word for it. Look around, see what’s being flagged, see the impact it’s already having. Food blogs, people taking about chronic pain issues, LGBTQ sites, art sites etc.

I’m curious to see how it plays out but I’ve yet to see a site use an “algorithm” in a way that ever benefited the users. Somehow it always benefits the advertisers. Weird that way huh.

For the time being though, gonna wait and see how things go. Still keeping this account up, but with a watchful eye on things. If this site goes (no) tits-up then please check out my work at some other places:

Thai personal trainer and model Jirawat Jemansutikun has posted 2,286 photos on Instagram without incident.  This photo of Jirawat has been flagged as porn by tumblr, one of my original posts.

Ramon Casas and Pere Romeu on a Tandem -Ramon Casas, 1897

From the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya: “An unusual and emblematic painting from Catalan Modernisme depicting Ramon Casas himself and Pere Romeu, the barman at the famous beer-hall Els Quatre Gats, pedalling on a tandem with the Barcelona skyline in the distance. The canvas decorated the beer-hall, which became a meeting-place for the artists and intellectuals who had started the movement, as well as for members of the younger generation, such as Picasso, Mir and Nonell.

Well that was certainly time consuming.

Cleared 2/3 of my blog after it was all flagged as adult content. One image was deemed too filthy for visual consumption though, a 19th century picture of a man with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Betcha’ you were all jackin’ it to that.

MY ACCOUNT: *older post of a painting with a half-naked woman*

TUMBLR: “Huh, seems OK.”

MY ACCOUNT: *even older post with a picture of a fully clothed game character I created*

TUMBLR: “This seems weird!!! Let’s flag it as inappropriate!”

…wut.

tom-isaacs:

Anónimo 3 -  María Evelia Marmolejo

Joining a roster of politically active Latin American artists experimenting with performance art in the 1980s, Marmolejo’s works dealt largely with environmental issues, the role of women, and the concurrent political oppression in her native Colombia. Anónimo 3 (1982), for instance, was conceived as an atonement ritual in which she apologized to the Earth for years of pollution. The 15-minute performance in Valle del Cauca, Colombia, consisted of her covering her face with gauze and her body with surgical tape, then performing a vaginal wash over a toilet bowl in the center of a circular patch of earth. The fluids that fell to the ground were intended to re-fertilize the area.

This post was recently flagged as explicit. I requested a review and received an email within a matter of minutes to say the review had been performed and the ruling was upheld. There was no room for appeal. The post was taken off my tumblr. I decided to make a complaint through other channels.

I sent a message to community support:

My post was incorrectly flagged as explicit. There is nothing sexual in this image and no nipples or genitals are showing.

I received the following response:

Adult content is not permitted on Tumblr.

If you feel that we have miscategorized your post, you can appeal this decision. Just open your account settings, select “Review flagged posts,” and you’ll see a timeline view of your posts that have been flagged on that blog.

Unsatisfied with this response I persisted:

Thanks [redacted],

But the person who reviewed the material has not followed your own guidelines. Furthermore, the review of my appeal took all of five minutes before it was denied so the claim that it was ‘carefully reviewed’ does not stand up to scrutiny.

I am very disappointed not only with the draconian turn that Tumblr has taken, but also the scattershot approach they’ve taken to upholding their own standards and rules.

Some time later I received the following email:

Hello,

We’ve reviewed your classification appeal and have determined the contents of your post is not adult per our Community Guidelines located here: https://www.tumblr.com/policy/en/community. Your post has now been restored. We apologize for the error. For more information about what is considered adult content, please see our FAQ support post or the Tumblr Help Center.

Thank you,

THIS is flagged. Are you fucking kidding me? Considering 90% of my posts are flagged, you guys won’t be seeing me on here for much longer. Peace ✌

I’ve been away from tumblr for many many months (maybe a year?) and I forgot about flagged posts and didn’t know that we could see our own flagged ones. I see that one of the flagged posts is a very embarrasing Noaire one understandably lol but why was this one flagged though? And wow, I used to watch this show, it feels like it’s been ages since i watched an episode.

So….the real question is….Will this post get flagged too?????

Bahahahaha! Tumblr’s going absolutely bonkers tonight. A total of four of my drawings got flagged including my forced perspective design (with 0 living things in it) and a couple of innocent pirates just minding their own business. And yet my lady with naked-people hair was left untouched! What a riot. Well, I’m not really sure what to do about this. Does this mean nobody can see them? I wonder if the algorithm will get sorted out eventually.

Seriously!!!!!!!  WTF

I would seriously like to know from someone at tumblr why this was flagged. Is it ankle porn? The shoes too strappy? And yes, I did submit it for review. It was flagged again.

Since the 17th about 12 of my posts where flagged as adult content and when I went to try and appeal it there was no appeal button. I went through their help and read the whole article. I even contacted support who then copied and pasted their help page not even trying to assist me.  All I know is that there was supposed to be a button for the original creator to click and allow up to appeal but there wasn’t.

On my computer:

On the app:

See no button for appeal.

It has taken me days to figure out this work around and I thought some other people out there might be having this issue.

Now here is how you appeal your post when you don’t have the appeal button

Now go through your blog and find all your pages with censored posts clicking on them to take you to the original post.

image

Take a look at the url.

image

See that number there? Copy it!

Open up a new page and type in this:

https://www.tumblr.com/dashboard/blog/your url/

At the end paste that number.

image

When you hit enter you will get this:

The appeal button is finally there! Click it!

image

You’ll get this message and then you’ll click appeal again.

image

Your post is now being appealed.

You can check that it was fixed just by refreshing your blogs page.

image

And that’s it! I know it is stupid and ridiculous to do such a ridiculous back method but unfortunately it’s the only solution I’ve come up with.

Also no you can’t just use the weird sidebar dashboard to find it as any flagged posts don’t actually show up at all in it.

Anyways I hope this helps you guys.

I’ve been doing this. It definitely works, but it’s REALLY clunky.

You ALMOST CERTAINLY have flagged posts that Tumblr didn’t notify you about, so you should check.

The easiest way to find them (and it’s kind of a beating) is to go to [yoururl].tumblr.com/archive. (ex. I’m talesofdrunkennessandcruelty.tumblr.com/archive.) You’ll be able to scroll through thumbnails of everything you’ve posted, separated by month. If anything has been flagged, then you’ll see a thumbnail graphic like the very first one at the top of this.

Open the flagged post in a separate window. It will say that the post wasn’t found, but that’s fine. All you need is numerical listing that’s in the link. Copy that then follow the instructions above.

Sometimes it takes a second or two for the post you want to load, so all you’ll see initially is your dashboard. GIVE IT A SECOND, and you should see the flagged post along with the option to appeal.

I really hope this helps someone.

talesofdrunkennessandcruelty:

I just got an email from Tumblr saying “you recently uploaded content onto your Tumblr, talesofdrunkennessandcruelty, that has been flagged as adult content.”

This is a SFW blog, so I can’t imagine what they removed, but I’ve gone back through all my posts since Halloween. I don’t see ANY content that’s been flagged. I’ve got 28,029 posts (including this one.) It will take WEEKS to search every last one. Are there any better ways to find what was flagged?

I don’t know why I bother since I stopped posting on December 17. I guess it’s the principle. Meanwhile, I’ve gotten close to 100 new followers since then AND ALMOST ALL OF THEM are spambots. Tumblr hasn’t done a THING about those…or the thousands of fakes/hoaxes/spammers/scammers I’ve reported/blocked in the past. They just care about nipples, apparently……..

Update

The easiest way to find flagged content is to search through your archive. (ex. talesofdrunkennessandcruelty.tumblr.com/archive) If you look closely as you scroll down, you’ll see a post that says it was removed BUT if you click on the post it’ll take you to a dead link. So you STILL have to scroll manually through EVERY POST on you Post screen (ex. www.tumblr.com/blog/talesofdrunkennessandcruelty) until you get to it.

Also, my “recent upload” was a story and pic I linked to 4.5 months ago. I’ll let you judge how “adult” it is for yourselves…
