Cluster of etched celestite crystals in situ, south of Austin, Texas. These were all loose when they came out of the pocket (something like 14 or 15 separate pieces), so it took some assembling to get back together. Naturally, I nicknamed the cluster Humpty Dumpty . I’ll show the final result in a future post.

Just a reminder to always be careful venturing outside looking for crystals. I was a little too eager sticking my hand into what i thought was an empty pocket the other day when I felt a smooth coil and quickly yanked my hand out. Luckily this snake is harmless (I believe it’s a yellow-bellied racer), but it could have easily been a venomous species or any number of other critters. Here’s a little double-terminated calcite crystal from a trip the other day out west of Austin. I don’t find very many of these as most of the crystals here form as clusters or grow into the walls of the cavities they formed in, but occasionally a perfect scalenohedron pops out :)

Just thought I’d share this neat example of pleochroism. It’s a sapphire crystal from Madagascar which I just recently noticed is considerably greener when viewed edge-on. This isn’t unusual with corundum (and quite a few other gemstones for that matter), but the color difference here seemed striking enough to make a little post about it.

My rarest echinoid fossil to date! It’s a cidarid from the lower Glen rose formation, found North of San Antonio, TX. I don’t have a positive ID just yet, but I’m aware of someone finding a Paracidaris texanus at the same site. To put it’s scarcity into perspective, this is the first one I’ve ever seen and I’ve been fossil hunting in this formation for years. It may be several more years before I find another.

Well I sold out of blue fluorites almost immediately thanks to my last Instagram post blowing up, but for those who missed out I’m going to work on listing a few more later this week. (I’ll share another post here when the listings are up).
