Drawtober 5: Ancient Rituals

All rituals have a beginning. And for the rituals that take place on All Hallows’ Eve, that beginning was when the first ghost returned to the world of the living.

[ID: Black and white digital illustration of a ghost walking through an open, wooden gate. The front of the ghost (the part past the gate) is fully opaque and then fades until the back of the ghost (behind the gate) is almost invisible. There are round, organic shaped stones arranged in a circle around the gate, decreasing in size the further they are from the gate. Tuffs of grass are between the stones. End Description]

The following day was somewhat calmer but continued persistently wet, although the rain was evidently getting fed up with falling the entire time, as it only dribbled aimlessly, on and off, in a decidedly half-hearted and desultory sort of way, no doubt having exhausted itself in the torrential downpours of recent days.

Algy reclined on the rough concrete step in his assistants’ new front gateway, gazing out across the still-green croft land to the brown peat bogs and hillsides beyond, wishing that his assistants had thought to provide some kind of waterproof cushion for the benefit of fluffy birds who did not much care for cold, damp tail feathers. The mist had cleared sufficiently to see the grey, blurry shapes of two out of the three islands which should be visible from that spot, although it looked as though they might vanish again at any moment, as things so often did on the wild west coast of the Scottish Highlands…

At first there was no sign of sentient life of any kind, and Algy contemplated the dreich October day alone, but eventually a lone wanderer ambled by and paused for a moment to exchange a few words.

“How’re ye doing?” enquired the sheep, adopting the form of greeting common to most local residents in that area.

“No so bad,” replied Algy, in the same manner. “And yourself?”

“Baaaaaaaaaaa!” bleated the sheep, and turning its head away it slowly walked away, leaving Algy alone on the step once again.

Algy hopes that if you should find yourself in a similar situation this Sunday, you will at least have the benefit of a wee bit of conversation with some fellow creature, even if it is only a sheep… but just in case you do not, he sends you all lots of damp but very fluffy hugs xo

“Your Cup is Full”. Study for a Minoan cylinder seal impression*, 2012/2017

Acrylics on prepaped paper, 13.7 x 18.5 cm

Last month I had a dream involving an old memory exercise – the blind study of an ancient Minoan cylinder seal impression painted back in 2012.

In my dream I return to the studio after a walk and realize I have a guest: someone is shuffling through drawings in complete darkness! I switch the light on and find myself standing in the middle of a subterranean place of worship. In front of me there’s a Persian girl examining my drawings scattered on the floor among oddly shaped (votive?) coins and gemstones. After a while she pulls this old sheet of studies, nods thoughtfully and cuts the seal impression out of it with scissors. She inspects the painting again before producing a qalam from the folds of her colourful hide and writing something just above the grotesque griffin figure. She then hands the sheet over to me with a lovely smile. To my surprise the tiny piece of paper weighs like an apple; the Farsi calligraphy reads “Your cup is full”. I reach out to touch the writing but my hand meets with an obstacle - there’s an invisible object sitting on the surface of the study!

Upon awakening I promptly pulled the sheet from the heap, cut out the impression, brought it as close to the dream version as I could and added the gilded calligraphy. Now haunted by the memory of the invisible object I can’t help touching the writing every now and then fully expecting the phantom barrier to block my finger.

This time can totally feel like:”WTF IS GOING ON??? What’s happening to me?” We are collectively shedding layers of conditioning that is beyond our individual lifetimes, we are letting go of concepts and identities that kept us safe but also imprisoned.

It might feel like mini deaths because it is in fact a dying off of these old patterns. And with that can come a feeling of grief or a sense of mourning an old life. Allow yourself to process those feelings but have faith in letting go of the old masks and costumes, of any relationships that are falling apart in the face of truth and of any life choices that were never truly in alignment with your highest potential.

Letting things crash takes courage and trust but when door closes another ones opened and your courageous surrendering will be rewarded.
Death always means new life ✨ As you are releasing old versions of reality you can begin to perceive life from a higher perspective = through the eyes of love ♥️.
.
.

// Physical symptoms are totally part of this awakening journey. We are in the process of embodying more light, more love, more divinity into this human form and so the body is shifting and changing as well. Trauma and suppressed emotions are stored within the tissue and as the frequency is raising and you are working through these old aspects physical symptoms can appear as your structure is adapting. This density is being purged and released from your system. Just as with any old thought patterns or suppressed emotions that are coming up - have compassion, hold yourself, forgive yourself and let go Let your body know that it is okay. It lived with all these patterns for many years. Take good care of yourself in these times ♥️ I love you!!

Music Video of the Week: Guns and Ammunition - July Talk

This is a good weekend to be a music fan in Calgary as three quality bands come to Cow Town.

It all begins tonight at the Saddledome, when legendary rock band KISSfinally take the stage. The band was originally scheduled for the final Saturday of the Stampede, but of course the June floods effectively postponed the show. Now, four months later, Calgary’s KISS fans will get to rock and roll all night.

Then tomorrow, two big indie rock shows will hit YYC, beginning with Hollerado at Republik. The band from Ottawa has made a habbit of playing shows in Calgary, making stops here 5 times in the past 3 years. But the last time this band played happened to be during the Sled Island music festival on Wednesday, June 19. I was originally planning on going to that show, but a heavy rainstorm kept me at home. Twenty four hours later the water from that storm turned into the devastating Calgary floods. Hopefully tomorrow night’s show will be a bit more accessible.

And finally, the cream of the crop, July Talk will be playing the Gateway tomorrow night as well. Don’t let SAIT’s bar venue fool you, it’s actually an excellent to go watch an intimate show from a lesser known band. I can make a huge testament to it from the incredible shows I’ve seen from Family of the Year and Wildlife earlier this year. I can’t imagine July Talk would even threaten to take a step down.

There’s a big opportunity to see some great live music this weekend and I really hope you get to take advantage of it.
