This panel depicts the anxiety and confusion I feel when trying to process how people treated me when I was read as female, and how they treat me now as male. It’s a bit of a mind fuck when society tells you to follow certain roles because of your perceived gender and then one day, the switch flips and you’re suddenly told to do the opposite of what you were socialized. Regardless if you’ve always been gender non-conforming, and reject the idea of gender roles/stereotypes, it’s still stressful to be in environments (or around people) who strongly enforce them.

[Image IDs: Image 1: A series of three small carved ‘mannequins’ that only feature clothing. They are mounted on a wooden dowel and circular cardboard base.

The first is of a blue sweatshirt with hot pink accents. The pants are bright yellow. The right arm is over the chest and the right leg is a step back.

The second is of a button-up with a flannel pattern. There are pink and blue stripes over the yellow background. The leggings are in a blue to pink gradient. The left forearm arm is forward and the right leg is a step back.

The third is of a pink dress with a yellow peter pan collar. There is a blue cardigan over it. The right arm has the forearm forward.

My carving project using floral foam. I was hoping to show how gendering clothing (with this gendering and sectioning in the market happening in the USA post-WW2) is unnecessary as it feeds into rigid gender roles. This effect was emphasized by removing the body in the mock mannequins, referencing Greek statues (particularly ‘Doryphoros’ and ‘Peplos Kore’),and finally through mixing child-like bright colors for the finish. I referenced different clothing I wear and common children’s clothing similar to them for he final project.

Otomen by Aya Kanno

I really enjoyed this manga, it’s really cute and warming! It’s about Asuka, who’s a high-school boy. He loves cute, fluffy and sparkly things, his hobbies are to knit, sew read shoujo manga and bake cakes. But his transphobic mom can’t stand feminine men , so he forced himself to hide his real self and pretend to be super-manly. But when he falls in love with the tomboyish and cool Ryo he can’t keep his real self hidden any longer, because love makes him want to make cute bentos and bake cakes and decorate.  Also it soon becomes apparent that there’s a lot of other guys with “feminine” hobbies around.  It’s mostly light-hearted comedy with some surreal elements, but there is a clear moral stance taken that people should be themselves and not care about gender norms, and it’s the gender roles that are mocked. Also Asuka is truly adorable!
