Today marks Transgender Day of Remembrance, designated to honor transgender and gender non-conforming people who have been lost to anti-LGBTQ violence. ❤️

The honorary day was created by trans advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith in 1999 after Rita Hester, a transgender woman, was murdered in 1998.

At least 22 transgender and gender non-conforming people ― the overwhelming majority of whom are Black transgender women ― have been killed in the U.S. in 2019 according to the Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest LGBTQ advocacy group.

Today we share their names and honor them. Learn their stories here.

transpsychology:

I have seen a growing number of people citing statistics about increased suicide risk as evidence that therapists/psychologists/counselors/society should not support trans people’s identities and transitions. Gina Loudon told Fox News that those who supported trans people’s right to transition were “science deniers,” claiming that research has found that trans people’s suicide risk increases 20-fold when they transition (spoiler: that statistic is inaccurate). Michael Cook recently penned a blog post titled “What do the statistics say about transgender mental health?”, in which he concluded that the idea that trans people’s psychological stress will be relieved through transitioning is pure deception that runs counter to the evidence. Heath Lambert, professor of biblical counseling who counsels trans people to avoid transition, defends his position by stating that trans people who have transitioned still have higher rates than the general population.

I’ll be clear: Trans people do have increased suicide risk. Across all demographics, if a person is transgender they are more likely to seriously consider and attempt suicide.1The research, however, just flat out does not support the above views that this increased risk is due to some instability associated with undergoing a gender transition. I propose we take a thorough look at the statistics and the science on trans suicide, so we can get a grasp on what we do know about trans people’s suicide risk. Below are 8 consistent findings from the literature on trans suicide.

On my other, psychology-focused blog, I break down the research on trans suicide to get a better sense of what contributes to trans people’s increased risk of suicidality.

Spoiler: Transitioning does not increase a person’s risk of seriously considering or attempting suicide.

When you get that feelingof intense gendereuphoriaand you’re like, oh so this is what life is supposed to feel like?

Pan vs. bi discourse is so stupid just let people have their labels. I’m transandbi and my sister is pan and we buy each other, each other’s respective flags and cute pride gifts and there’s literally no problem stop telling people what their own label means or that their label isn’t ‘inclusive’ enough when it is and always has been or that their label is too new and is trying to replace things that already exist just stop. Just let people use the labels they are comfortable with. Please. It’s not that hard.

We already have homophobes/transphobes who hate every single one of us despite which LGBTQIA+ members you may personally think are legit or not. They hate us all. So can we please come together as a community instead of fighting amongst ourselves? This goes for terfs, aro/ace spec exclusionists, and enby exclusionists as well. Just stop. It’s not getting you anywhere. The homophobes and transphobes still hate you even if you hate us with them. We need to show strength and unity. Stop hurting people and especially kids in your own community.

In this week’s FFR we have a pipin’ hot entertainment roundup! ☝

Who’s being tragically transphobic this week? What’s the latest in video game labor? What brave artist can tackle the dreaded menace of cancel culture?

We talk all this and more. Find it with the link in our bio!

A new comic that’ll be contributed to a new anthology. Details TBA at a much later date.

This panel depicts the anxiety and confusion I feel when trying to process how people treated me when I was read as female, and how they treat me now as male. It’s a bit of a mind fuck when society tells you to follow certain roles because of your perceived gender and then one day, the switch flips and you’re suddenly told to do the opposite of what you were socialized. Regardless if you’ve always been gender non-conforming, and reject the idea of gender roles/stereotypes, it’s still stressful to be in environments (or around people) who strongly enforce them.

Reposting this one because it’s gonna be another miserably hot day. I drew this 3 years ago (almost) to the day. To anyone who binds, you are in my thoughts. It’s one of the most uncomfortable things I’ve done. It’s incredibly awful in the summer. Be safe. Stay hydrated. If it’s possible, try a sports bra or go without compressing your chest. Wear cotton and linen. Choose a mid-length binder over the full-length ones. Some suggest baby powder under the binder. For folks with friends who bind, invite them to your air conditioned houses/apartments. Maybe offer them rides in your air conditioned cars if they bike or take public transportation. I never wanted to go anywhere during the summer when I was binding because I knew the trek would be sweaty and awful.

This is sample of a comic I created for the anthology How To Wait: An Anthology of Transition. It’s about the wait that occurs during different stages of my transition.

“How to Wait is an art, writing, and comics anthology, edited by Sage Persing, that collects the work of 30 trans, nonbinary, and gender-non-conforming artists as they attempt to cope with the myriad forms of waiting that come with their transitions and experience of gender.”

Contributors Include: Gabriel Howell, AJ Rio-Glick, E.L. Tedana, Allspice, Erin Nations, Joris Bas Backer, Sam Owens, Maia Kobabe, Samuel Luke, Krysta Morningstarr-Cox, Oliver Northwood, Indie Beare, Laurel Lynne Leake, Mister Loki, Ash Wadi, Kou Chen, Sage Persing, Kat Ghastly, Will Betke-Brunswick, Simon Williamson, Veronica Casson, Joa Blumenkranz, Charlie Davies, Jae Zander Kitinoja, Jamie Diaz, Sonya Saturday, Oce, Ajuan Mance, Kimball Anderson, Maia Vlcek

To read the full comic, support trans/non binary/gender non-conforming artists and buy a copy online! (As of 04/28/2019, the book is sold out, but it’s being reprinted and copies should be available in two weeks!)
