Anyone else suffering from major college burnout? What do you do to overcome it?

I totally forgot about this post, and wow, I made it almost 4 years ago now! Then I was about to graduate with my B.A. in Classical Studies.

If you had asked me back in 2018 if I thought my life would be like this, I would tell you that I couldn’t even imagine it. I had been in school so long and had so many expectations. A lot of those expectations didn’t happen, and I absolutely had burnout from school.

Now, in January, 2022, it has been over a year since I got my M.A. in Classical Studies, I am living in Canada, married to the most amazing person and I have two crazy and wonderful dogs. I am living the life I want to live. My expectations from years ago are definitely not my expectations now (especially with a pandemic going on). My expectations now are more realistic, but also focused on what would give me a happy and contented life.

In answer to the question from my original post, I don’t think I really did overcome college burnout. I did have a lot of fun in grad school though, and I met lifelong friends and loves, and I have had many wonderful experiences. I’m just so pleased with where I am now compared to where I was in 2018, and I know I was doing relatively well then too.

Anyone worried about how to prepare for your MSW grad school interview, Here are the questions I was asked verbally at my grad school interview.  Please everyone feel free to add the questions you were asked to alleviate some of the stress that prospective MSW candidates face. This is obviously paraphrased to the best of my ability.

Section 1)  Why did you choose social work?  Why this program?

Section 2) What are your strengths?  What are your weaknesses?

Section 3) What are your future short term plans/goals?  Long term plans/goals?

Section 4) What abilities do you bring to the MSW program?

Section 5) Do you think the learning process or grades are more important?

Section 6)  How do you contribute to the value of service?  What population do you feel you have the least experience with?  What population do you feel the most uncomfortable with?

This is from the written section- we had an hour.

Section 7) How would you respond to someone in class who states that LGTBQIA students bring oppression on themselves by “choosing” to be gay?

Section 8)  If you thought you did really good on a paper and then your grade was low, what would you do?

Section 9) (This was the weirdest question)  If your professor was wearing an outfit that you found distracting or affected your learning, how would you handle this?

My interview lasted about 2 ½ hours.  I hope this helps.  Good luck to all of us.

hey everyone! I will be starting grad school next month, and I’m getting really nervous about the workload. I’m going for my PhD in neuroscience. does anyone have any advice for their first year of grad school? I don’t want to overwork and get burnout.

The grad student I work with and I became temporary guardians of a three year old. The three year old turned out to be a clone of the grad student’s girlfriend. I have never met this woman.

Person who’s on the same side of the argument as you, but also has the worst takes about it you’ve ever seen in your life

#yes yes we’ve all been on tumblr (via @mylordshesacactus)

when you notice a bunch of papers in your area citing this one old paper and you find a PDF of it and it’s only in German and as far as you can tell no one has ever translated it and so you pop it into google translate and start going through it to make sure the translation makes sense (it doesn’t) and then it slowly starts to dawn on you that some guy in 1934 had the same project proposal as you but he didn’t even know what DNA was

is it worth designing your committee entirely around who gives (relatively) easy comprehensive exams

Making remarkable progress on his research, the grad student wonders what disastrous mistake will eventually blow up in his face.
