About three weeks ago, my Trichocereus bridgesii monstrose sent out some new growth. I’m impressed with how fast it is creating those menacing spines! Yet another piece of evidence that my grow light is creating monster plants.

My Stapelia began as a single branch cutting given to me at a meeting of the New York Cactus & Succulent Society (the finger on the right side) and has since grown the left branch and just started some new growth at the bottom left. The original portion has also begun to grow at the top. Maybe my plants will become monsters under this grow light!

About a week ago this blog reached 1,000 followers!  Thank you all for sharing in my love of succulents.

When I first started getting interested in succulents, I began going to botanical gardens to get inspiration and to start learning the names of plants that I was drawn to.  This plant at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden stuck out:

From the tag I learned it is a Haemanthus albiflos, albiflos because the flowers (-flos) are white (albi- like albino).  It isn’t a succulent in the traditional puffy leaved or cactus sense, but is actually a bulb from South Africa.  I thought it was such a cool looking plant with multiple leaves growing out of the same center and the new growth being a different color from the outer leaves.  Months later I won a lovely pair of bulbs in an auction at the Connecticut Cactus & Succulent Sale.  I got them for cheap, but was willing to bid pretty high to get one for my collection, luckily it didn’t come to that.  Below are two photos of it:

The leaves on both have since died back and new leaves have sprouted.  I was worried about it during my recent move because it took me a couple of weeks to get a grow light set up in the new somewhat cave-like apartment, but the new growth is doing very well:

Two months ago, the partner in crime and I moved to a new apartment in Brooklyn.  It is in a great neighborhood, but it lacks the good light that the old apartment had.  So, I put together a grow light setup hoping that my succulents would accept it as a sun substitute.

I was pleased as punch to notice 5 days ago that my Trichocereus bridgesii monstrose had put off some new growth!  These two pictures compare the growth over just five days.  The grow light is working!

LED Grow Lights have revolutionized theindustry.  They are a step up fromtraditional lighting systems in many ways due to better light quality, safetyfactors , less heat emission, and decreased power consumption.  Based on these factors, many growers areswitching to LED Grow Lights from older light systems.  LED systems have made huge leaps in just thelast few years into becoming the premier method of growing cannabis plants indoors.  In this article, I will discuss some tips to make the best use of LED Grow Lights to grow massive cannabis plants.

With indoor growing, the obvious advantage is complete control of environmental factors such as lighting, nutrients, temperature, soil conditions, air quality and humidity.  One imperative item to remember is that with LED lights, proper care and attention needs to be paid to the temperature.  This is because LED Grow lights do not emit the heat emitted by most lighting systems, for best results keep temperatures to 85 degrees Fahrenheit and humidity at 45%.

If you are growing in soil, with LED Grow Lights you have to be careful not to over water your plants as LED Grow Lights do not dry out the soil.  Of course, it is necessary to ensure that the soil mixture is capable of proper draining or the roots may become damaged.  For best results, a peat-based medium is recommended supplemented with 40-50% perlite.  With this mixture, you will get not only proper drainage but also oxygen circulation to the roots.  When the first 2-3 inches of the soil becomes dry or the leaves get droopy, then it is time to water the plants.  Make sure the water runs all the way to the bottom so that the roots are also being hydrated properly.

If rather than soil you are choosing to grow hydroponically, then the main change required is to keep the water temperature below 70 degrees.  If you fail to do so, then your roots will suffer as water is unable to hold proper levels of oxygen above this temperature. Two ways to do so are to keep the water cool with a water chiller or to keep the entire space chilled below 70 degrees.

Another common mistake made by those new to LED Grow lights is that they forget about maintaining proper air circulation.  LED lights have the power to turn any small space into an area of marijuana cultivation however, air circulation should not be compromised.  Fortunately, it is easy to remedy this issue.  Even with no or poor air circulation, the cannabis plants will grow, however, the yield will be significantly less and the quality of the yield will be less than ideal.  I recommend some sort of small fan for circulating air as well as a larger exhaust fan.  The goal is to make sure that air is exchanged on an hourly basis at least a couple of times.  Taking the right steps to ensure air exchange will prevent any mold from growing on your plants as well as strengthen the plants to handle the bountiful yields generated by the LED Grow lights.

Mars Hydro TS 1000: A Surprisingly Good Grow Light For The $

Mars Hydro hit me up again to take look at one of their newer grow lights, the Mars Hydro TS 1000. It’s a very “bare bones” LED grow light from Mars that comes in around the $120 mark depending where you get it, and for that price you get a shockingly good umol/J.

Overall, it’s a buy for a budget grow led grow light for beginners.…
