i seriously feel this post. high hopes is easily the only bad song on pftw (even fuck a silver lining, which i didn’t like at first either, grew on me), and one of only a few weak songs panic has ever done (the songs w heavy autotune on fever, feels like xmas). i doubt he ever got (much) further on exes on tv than he played for us on periscope back when, and so the tune (that driving booming then grooving than crashing guitar, man) ended up being used for high hopes. unfortunately, because the minute and a half we got of exes was really good, and made me wonder about the story/experience eg who was the ex? (the lyrics aren’t that clear, but to me based on how i hear it, it’s is about his current female partner at the time, maybe sarah or maybe fictional or maybe an ex before her, cheating on him with an ex of his at least in part because he cheated on her, probably with the same ex.)
