#house of many ways
Have any of you read Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones? I was going through a bit of a reading slump for a few weeks, but this book helped to pull me out. It’s a hilarious story that manages to be a fairy tale while breaking all the traditions of fairy tales. I love the protagonist, Sophie, who is the eldest of three sisters and is resigned to working at a hat shop because, as the first page says, “it is quite a misfortune to be born the eldest of three. Everyone knows you are the one who will fail first, and worst, if the three of you set out to seek your fortunes.” As the book goes on, she is challenged to go find her own adventure and becomes confident in herself as those fairy tale ‘rules’ are proven to be breakable. There are two other books in this series (though they can be read alone), Castle in the Air and House of Many Ways, that y’all should check out if you have read this book.
(I’m now realizing that my book analyses and recommendations all sound like English papers…..I wish I could make them sound more exciting, but it’s a hard habit to break )

Charmain was forced to pick Waif up and back away, out of Morgan’s reach, so that all she heard next of the strange conversation behind the sofa was Mrs. Pendragon saying something about sending Twinkle (or was his name Howl?) to bed without supper and Twinkle daring her to “jutht try it.” As Waif quieted down, Twinkle said wistfully, “Don’t you fink I’m pwetty at all?”
There was a strange hollow thump then, as if Mrs. Pendragon had so far forgotten good behavior as to stamp her foot. “Yes,” Charmain heard her say. “Disgustingly pretty!”

Well Twinkle was very annoying haha poor Sophie, she had to deal with him for a whole book.
Let’s not forget about Twinkle and his lisp problem when he speaks .

“It’s the most confusing map I ever saw in my life! It can’t all be this house!”
“It is. It’s enormous,” Peter said. “And if you look, you’ll see that the way the map is folded is a clue to how you get to the different parts of it. See, here’s the living room on the top page, but if you go to the next page, you don’t get his study or the bedrooms because those are folded back, see. You get the kitchen instead because that’s folded the same way….”
Charmain’s head began to go round, and she closed her ears to Peter’s enthusiastic explanations.She looked at the swirling lines on the piece of paper in her hand instead. It almost seemed easier. At least, she could see “Kitchen” right in the middle of it, and “Bedrooms” and ”Swimming Pool” and “Study.” Swimming Pool? Not really, surely? An interesting swirl led off to the right, underneath these boxes, into a tangle containing a box labelled “Conference Room.” An arrow pointed off from this box labelled ”To Royal Mansion”.

I finished “House of many ways” too, I feel empty now .
Here we have Howl and Sophie and their everyday routine (Howl loving being himself and Sophie mad at him), Charmain and Peter (love them), Morgan and Calcifer (best uncle/babysitter ever), and Twinkle pretending to be innocent.
I like Calcifer a lot, and his bromance with Howl is perfect, two beautiful drama queens together.
