As much as I love Alice’s childlike innocent and silly expressions, I feel like she’s not praised as much as she could be for her maturity. It’s fair for her to be somewhat stunted socially due to her childhood, but this is a young woman that lived trapped for seventeen years, over six of which were alone, and not only she did adapt to the outside world but she did a pretty damn good job of adjusting to everything that was thrown at her.
She had the fortitude to survive a jabberwocky attack and deal with the inevitable emotional fallout of being the sole survivor, never let her unfair situation get her down, was kind and compassionate in spite of the absolutely traumatizing situations she had been through, and overcame obstacles like facing her childhood horrors head-on or standing up for what she believed in, in spite of a literal mob being against her, with more strength than I can often summon to just schedule an appointment.
She’s a tough cookie. A good, sugary, sweet cookie, but a tough one nonetheless.
Imagine being Medus: you know your mother is working to make you kingof Athen, that she loves you and cares for you and your rights.
Then again you know she loved Jason, once. She loved your half brothers. She loved her father and her brother.
You are Medus, you know of their fate, of your mother’s fame. It would be hard not to: even in a city where she is queen people whisper. After all Medea never stopped being a “barbarian sorceress”. She gained Aegeus her throne that way. And you can see it: something feral and unforgiving in her. Something godly. You cannot help but ask yourself what are the limits of her love for you, for anyone, even as she fights to keep the throne of Athens foryou.
I wonder about Medus and the way he felt afraid of his mother, of how he thought she was going to sacrifice him when they met once more in the Colchis, once they had lost Athen and he had turned into an obstacle rather than the asset he had once been in Athen.
If he felt relief or terror once they were finally able to meet again privately and she explained her new plan. If he truly, fully, trusted her then. Or if he thought he was going to meet the same fate his half siblings did well before he was born. If Medus saw what they did as she raised her knife as a sacrificing priestess. If he ever remembered a time his mother told him of Corinth, of the pain she felt as she sank her knife, of how she did it not to abandon her own blood. If he believed her or saw the lie she still told herself. If he ever thought of his uncle.
If he despaired and closed his eyes ready to die, only to reopen them to a mother that would help him conquer a whole people. A people that would change their name in his (and her) honour.
I wonder what Medea felt for Medus. Maybe she saw him as her redemption. The child that she would fight for, instead of sacrificing to her fury, the one that would allow her to go back home. To save her father’s legacy, the same legacy she once diminished.
Or, maybe she loved him, deeply and viscerally, but not as a redemption. Maybe Medea was too much like the gods: unable to keep more than one person in her heart at a time. Be it in love or in hate.
Wonder Woman was literally inspired by bisexual, feminist women. The writer who created her and his wife were in a dedicated, polyamorous relationship with another woman in the FORTIES. This woman, Olive Byrne, is said/thought to have been the inspiration for WW’s looks.
