Alexander Nevsky was the Russian commander during the Battle of the Ice in 1242, where the city-state of Novgorod fought the Teutonic Knights on a frozen lake. The ice broke beneath the knights and many drowned in the lake or froze. Gilbert would like to remind everyone that it wasn’t even the main branch of the Teutonic Knights doing the fighting and it was Eduard who thought it was a good idea to fight the Russians on a frozen lake.

Based on an interesting lecture from a Russian professor who grew up in the Soviet Union. American tourists are apparently very obvious in Russia as they are big on smiling in pictures. Traditionally, Russians don’t smile in photographs. :)
