dased-n-confuzed:

Since I’ve been in this fandom for about *checks calendar* 7months???damn time flies, I think I should start making some discussion posts. Long time ago, I made a post for my thoughts on ships in the Gorillaz fandom, so why not do that again but with Lupin? I think I’ll have an easier time since the main characters are all consenting adults that aren’t related to eachother, so I have no disgusting ships to contend with.

I’ll put the small disclaimer that all of this is opinion only and should only be taken as such. I don’t have anything against any of the ships mentioned (since nothing crosses the line) or any of the people that ship them, so this is down to personal preference only. All righty, let’s begin.

Polygang:

Right out the starting gate, we may get a bit controversial lol. Personally, I don’t ship them all together, whether it be the OT4 or OT5. This is due to the fact that I don’t think all of them are compatible with each other or even able to be in a relationship with multiple people. It’s a cute idea though, and I love to see people’s different interpretations of it.

LoopZoop:

This one is cute and kind of works canonically, even if it’s only ever acknowledged as a joke. The way I see it, they may never have a traditional relationship (in this case, being lovers/maybe getting married), but there is definitely an undeniable chemistry between them. There is a clear dependency on eachother to fulfill a role in eachother’s lives (a common theme you’ll notice with Lupin’s relationships here). Lupin needs Zenigata to give him the thrill of the chase, and Zenigata needs Lupin to give him a purpose in life. I personally think Zenigata is fantastic at his job and needs Lupin to give him a challenge and keep him from being bored. Plus, their dynamic is just so much fun!

FujiLup:

I love this ship for all the wrong reasons. Fujiko and Lupin are straight up bad for eachother, and yet only the two of them can make a relationship like that work beautifully. I often describe their relationship as a game or a dance. Fujiko askes Lupin to steal something for her, Lupin steals the thing hoping to get *something* out of it, Fujiko betrays him and leaves him with nothing. The benefits seem one-sided, but we’ve seen time and time again that Lupin expects (and sometimes down-right encourages) Fujiko to stab him in the back. To deviate from that would be breaking the rules of the game or ruining the rhythm of the dance. I think there’s a similarity to LoopZoop where both parties are playing a role for eachother. For Fujiko, Lupin is someone she knows she can always come back to, no matter how treacherous her betrayal. He gives her a place she can call home. For Lupin, it’s the thrill of a challenge. She rarely let’s him get anything from her, so when she does give him a peck on the cheek or lips, it’s that much grander of an award. That’s my speculation on the subject anyway. I also want to add that, for how great they work together, it can all fall apart from something as simple as a change of pace. We saw the fallout of this happening in part 5, after they had gotten married and tried to being domestic. It’s details like that that make this ship so interesting to me, I just love it!

LupGoe:

An interesting dynamic if nothing else. These two have chemistry but I don’t think it’s necessarily romantic. I think I view them more as rivals on friendly terms, more or less. They clearly do care about one another and go to great lengths to protect one another, but there is something else there. Lupin probably doesn’t have any particularly strong feelings about their youngest member, but Goemon does seem to want to pick fights with him the most. The inner workings of Goemon Ishikawa XIII’s mind deserves a post all of it’s own for how complex a character he is, but I’ll try to give an abridged version. I think he struggles a LOT with being “the best”, and working under Lupin has maybe bruised his ego a bit. It’s something he can lock away for only so long before the feeling flares up again and boils over (part 5 once more shows this happening and it is masterfully done!). In other words, I think there’s a passion there, but these two have a lot to work out before they could even consider romantic feelings.

JiGoe:

Ok here’s where people are really going to hate me lol. I don’t really ship them. Like, at all. I don’t know what it is but they just don’t really have all that much chemistry to me. The closest they get to being compatible is part 2, with how much they play off of eachother. Sadly, we don’t really see this relationship in any other part of the franchise (or if we do, I haven’t seen it). If anything, I think their relationship is more brotherly, Jigen being the older brother of the gang and Goemon being the younger brother. I think he does look up to Jigen a lot and likes having him around, and I think Jigen has a lot of respect for Goemon and appreciates what he brings to the team, but I don’t think there’s much past that. Sorry y'all.

FujiGoe:

I LOVE this ship! I think these two are super cute together. TWCFM is what originally sold me on the idea, one of the writers REALLY liked the idea of Goemon having a big ol crush on Fujiko and it was fucking adorable (even if she was like “mmkay” in the series lol). There actually isn’t many canon moments to support the ship, at least not outright, but there’s a lot to speculate on from what we know about the characters. We know that they are fairly good friends and, should it come down who he prefers to work with, he’s going to pick Fujiko at least over Lupin lol. We also know that Goemon is not interested in having sex. Whether that’s due to his training or personal preference is up to speculation. But automatically that is a huge difference for Fujiko with any other man she’s been with. (This also deserves it’s own post but abridged version once more) Fujiko is often placed into the role of sexy femme fatale, to the point where she just kind of expects to be treated like that. Hell, whether he means to or not, Lupin also pushes her into that category. So it has to be refreshing to have someone like Goemon, who she knows likes her, to treat her with respect and spend time with her without expecting (or wanting) anything in return. I think it’s a relationship that could work out long term if we ever got a chance to explore it further.

ZeniGoe:

I’m mostly adding this for completion’s sake. They don’t really interact much to determine if they even have chemistry. I think they probably have a begrudging respect for one another, but that’s about it…next!

FujiZeni:

(I’m guessing at these ship names, which should speak to their popularity lmao) Meh. The only time we really saw these two interact was in TWCFM and that whole thing was yikes. Zenigata barely qualifies as Zenigata in the series in my humble opinion (and idc about the manga ). And anytime these two do interact in the original series, it’s mostly out of necessity so…next!

JigZeni:

Here we go! This one may only live in the realm of speculation, since again these two don’t interact all that much (Zenigata is really laser-focused on Lupin huh?), but we can get something from what we know about the characters. I don’t know if Zenigata would be all that into Jigen, but I reckon Zenigata fits Jigen’s type to a T (if all those exes we’ve seen are to be believed). If things were different and Zenigata wasn’t a cop hellbent on throwing them all in jail, he would probably try his luck. I’ve also read a fic or two where they get together out of mutual pining for Lupin, and b o y that’s fun to unpack.

FujiJig:

It’s really hard to place how exactly I feel about this ship tbh. On one hand, the dynamic they have is usually one of my favorite type of ships (anyone that knows me from Gorillaz knows that I’m a huge Russdoc shipper). On the other hand, I have never seen two characters more repelled by eachother lmao. Like even when they’re being nice to eachother, I think the idea of being romantic disgusts them on a deep visceral level. And honestly? Good for them! I actually like that they can get along and not be into eachother. I think that’s a trope that has been done to death and it’s nice to just see them be (sort of) friends. I also believe that Jigen is 100% gay. I know that’s something that is open to interpretation in the canon (whether he’s gay or bi I mean, because he sure as fuck ain’t straight), but I see a lot of myself in him and how he handles relationships, and I’m gay so yeah :) Basically, these two have sibling vibes more than anything, can’t stand eachother but really do care about the other deep down. Tell ya what though, I do like the idea of them fighting over Lupin. I prefer it to be a friendly competition between them though, rather than anything with actual visceral.

JigLup:

Gee take a guess lmao. Honestly though, these two are my OTP. They have so much chemistry and compatibility, it’s kind of shocking! Obviously, nothing has ever been outright stated, and I highly doubt anything ever will be stated, but there’s a lot between them that is hard to read as just platonic. The cigarette lighting, the fierce loyalty and faith they have in eachother, the palatable JEALOUSY Jigen has anytime Lupin so much as looks at a woman. Like, how exactly are we supposed to take this? There’s also the fact that Lupin admitted Jigen is “the most stable thing in his life” and holy shit if that isn’t a significant role to assign to someone, especially for someone like Lupin. Honestly, I can talk all day about these two, but I wouldn’t be saying anything that hasn’t already been said a million times. It’s a great ship and these idiots clearly are in love with eachother.

All righty there we have it! As you can see, I mostly wanted to focus on the main five. I like Yata, but he hasn’t been around long enough for me to nail down his personality or his chemistry with the gang. Feel free to discuss with me if you’d like. I really love this franchise and y'all have been lovely so far.

These are such good n valid interpretations! I love how you described Fujiko’s & Jigen’s relationship, I see them more as close friends then siblings (but that’s purely bc they’re practically an exact copy of me & my best friend).

I am an avid OT4/5 shipper but it’s definitely more complicated than “all these ppl are equally in love & in a romantic relationship together” and more like: “these ppl allow/encourage eachothers differing romantic & platonic relationships & may or may not share the same partner but have differing dynamics depending on the pair or group.” (if that makes any sense lmao)

Also from my experience I started shipping Jigoe b/c of certain TV specials more than the parts! Not trying to change your mind or anything ofc but they do interact nicely in some of those (tho I can’t currently think of specific specials)

ANYWAYS I love your interpretations! Sorry for ranting a bit sjfsj but ye I just find it so interesting how ppl can watch the same content & come out w/ differing view points!

It was funny how differences between people could completely disappear once things went to hell. It was a feat that never ceased to make Jigen suprised yet at this point it really shouldn’t given how many times he’d been in situations that required him doing so. Situations such as the current one, a heist that was supposed to be easy became something much more than what he and his fellow criminals had bargained for. Once he and the others realized just how tedious the heist would be they’d of course tried to get out of there as quickly as they could. However it wasn’t meant to be seeing as how he and the others were overpowered and taken. And they weren’t the only ones who were taken, oh no.

Pops and his shadow had been taken as well leaving them all in the same predicament, and with an air of understanding, the differences between them being criminals and Pops and Yata being cops suddenly disappeared as if they never existed in the first place. The group that had taken them had quickly been taken over once they all joined forces, having not expected them all to band together. Thankfully they’d all managed to get out and escaped into the desert disappearing into the night, before finding a small building on the outskirts of an abandoned village. The group were quick to settle there for the rest of the night and regroup as to figure out how to take the threat down completely.

Jigen sat outside the house, the cool and dry desert breeze blowing sand around as well as his hair and clothes. The gunslinger was smoking a cigarette, in an effort to avoid falling asleep since he was currently on watch duty. The moon hung high in the dark night sky, shining down its silvery beams. The stars twinkled against the inky blackness, not as bright as the moon but still noticable. Jigen glanced towards the open doorway of the building where the others laid catching sight of his friends inside all sleeping away. Lupin was leaned up against the wall snoring with Fujiko beside him, her head resting on his shoulder as they slept peacefully underneath his iconic red jacket. Further inside sleeping sitting up with his sword tucked safely in his arms was Goemon, laying only a few feet away was Yatagarasu who was underneath his own coat for warmth. And Pops……

“Ya know you should have woken one of us up to take over. You need sleep too.”

Zenigata’s gruff voice spoke up from the doorway, causing Jigen’s eyes to snap up to him from beneath his fedora. The inspector stepped out into the night and stood next to the gunman, gesturing towards the empty space next to him.

“Mind if I sit here and smoke?”

Zenigata asked. Jigen let out a huff of smoke and waved his hand vaguely.

“Knock yourself out Pops, I don’t own the porch.”

He said. Giving the okay Zenigata sat himself down next to Jigen, and reached into his inner trenchcoat pocket to pull out his own carton of cigarettes. Jigen held out a lighter earning a hum of thanks from the slightly older man who lit up his cigarette and took a long drag out of it. The two men sat quietly for a bit, enjoying the nicotine from their cigarettes and the somewhat peaceful atmosphere of the night.

“So what do you reckon about the plan Lupin came up with? Think it will work?”

Pops asked breaking the silence between them. Jigen took another drag and shrugged.

“I’d say it would. If Lupin came up with it then it’s got some chance of working, his plans usually do.”

Jigen responded honestly earning another hum from Zenigata.

“You’re not wrong, his schemes no matter how hair brained and out there they are, tend to get results.”

The inspector said his eyes furrowing as he seemed to mentally recall all of the heists that were outlandish. Jigen snorted at the other man’s expression, somewhat amused by it.

“You can vouch for it huh Pops?”

The gunman asked teasing him. Pops shot him a small look, his dark eyes unamused.

“Haha.”

Zenigata said his tone gruff yet not upset. Jigen let out another amused noise and smirked slightly before flicking his cigarette butt out into the sand. Zenigata watched the action, not bothering to comment on it knowing that it would be a lost battle.

“How long have you been up?”

Pops asked making Jigen pause for a beat.

“Not too long, why you worried about me Pops?”

The younger man asked, trying to distract the older man from his vague answer. Unfortunately Zenigata wasn’t easily swayed when it came to things like this and didn’t fall for the obvious attempt of distraction.

“That’s funny considering you were still up when everyone else went to bed, and you should know the answer to that question by now Jigen.”

He said zoning his gaze onto the gunslinger beside him. Jigen silently cursed the inspector and his keen eye for things. It wasn’t no fluc that Zenigata was Interpol’s best of the best.

“You’re too good at your job Pops, can’t even let a man have his lies.”

The gunman grumbled knowing that the jig was up and not bothering to acknowledge the obvious answer to his earlier question, already knowing the answer to it. Zenigata rolled his eyes at the other man’s grumbles and without a further ado threw his own cigarette away as well. As Jigen continued to pout and grumble, Zenigata shimmied out of his trenchcoat and with little hesitation tossed it onto Jigen’s shoulders. The man in question let out a noise and snapped his head towards him, his usually covered eyes exposed briefly showing caution and confusion.

“Get some sleep Jigen, I’ll take over the rest of the watch.”

The inspector said his tone leaving no room for argument. Jigen stared at him, his eyes wide before they flashed with a slight irritation and acceptance.

“Whatever I’m too tired to argue about this. Make yourself comfortable old man.”

The gunslinger said earning a now confused look from Pops.

“What why-”

He’d began to question before being cut short by his surprise as Jigen leaned up against him, getting comfortable. Zenigata was instantly distracted by the scent of gunpowder and musky cologne that Jigen always had on his person. The steady weight of the younger man against him made his heart pound and he cleared his throat trying to not blush from how close Jigen was. It wasn’t often that the criminal quite literally snuggled up against him, usually it was Lupin or Fujiko who did this kind of thing and Goemon every so often. Yet here he was having Jigen do the same thing even if it was the result of him being annoyed at being told to go to sleep. As Zenigata tried to calm his racing heart down Jigen looked up at him from underneath his fluffy bangs and took in the sight of the flustered man. It was a rather cute sight to see such a large man get all shy and tongue tied just because Jigen was leaning up against him.

‘I should do this more often if it gets this kind of reaction.’

He noted mentally, his body relaxing against the other man’s as sleep started to creep up. Having been up for so long was finally taking its toll on him added with the solid presence of Zenigata beside him. Jigen would never admit it, but Zenigata had an aura of safety to him that could make people relax Jigen included. It was one of the things that the gunslinger liked about the inspector. It was a thing that he rarely got to experience given that he was a criminal and Pops was on the side of the law. Moments like these usually happened in situations like this or in rare peaceful moments. As Jigen began to drift off he felt a small kiss be pressed into the side of his head and a gentle hand rubbing his shoulder soothingly.

“Rest well Jigen.”

Zenigata’s voice, soft and tender was the last thing he heard and as he finally went to sleep Jigen made one last mental note.

'Once this is over, I’ll take Pops out for a drink…..’

*Jigzeni???? Yes. I love this pairing and it pains me that they don’t have a lot of content involving them like holy shit???? They’re really cute bro???? Also it’s implied that Jigen and Zenigata are in a relationship with Lupin, Fujiko and Goemon as well and Yata is their unofficial charge lol. I mainly wrote this for practice and fun, mainly because I’m trying to get a feel for these characters so forgive me if it sucks. Anyways if any y'all read this I hope you enjoyed it!!!!*

The Roles We Play

Warning: Angst, mentions of blood, injuries, attempted murder and near death experiences. If this makes you uncomfortable I highly encourage y'all to check out my other works!

It’s always the same.

One moment things would be its normal routine, then the next everything would be completely and utterly shaken up. Then again wasn’t everything always this way when it came to him? Wasn’t it always Zenigata who shook things up, whether it be intentional or not? Wasn’t it not always Zenigata who changed the script at the worst time possible?

For as long as he could remember his rival had always been a man who did what he believed was right. Never truly following the rules that applied to the world whenever something of greater importance was on the line. Zenigata was in many ways a breed of his own making. A man who did things many men in his position would do, always following his morals and heart rather than his head when it really came down to it. It was a characteristic that wasn’t seen very often. A characteristic that always to some extent irked Lupin in some way, shape or form.

Especially when it resulted in situations like now.

Lupin gripped the cigarette in his fingers as he leaned on the balcony, trying to clear his head. His hands felt grimy and they were a dark shade of red from blood. His bright red jacket and blue shirt were stained in it as well yet he himself wasn’t bleeding.

No the blood belonged to the very man he was thinking about.

The thief felt his throat tighten slightly as he scrambled to get his lighter. He needed nicotine severely to help settle the underlying anxiety that threatened to overtake him. After searching through his pockets he finally found what he was searching for and quickly lit up his cigarette and took a deep inhale. The burning smoke and taste of tobacco filled his mouth and lungs, giving his senses a much needed relief even if small. Blowing out the smoke in a cloud, the thief stared out into the world below him. The slight bitter chill of the night air bit at him yet he didn’t dare move to go back inside the building where the rest of the gang was. The sounds of vehicles and other things filled his ears as he took another drag of his cigarette. Lupin suddenly tensed as the sounds of footsteps coming onto the balcony filled his hearing. He didn’t dare turn to look at who had joined him, knowing well enough who it was.

Feeling the body of another place itself next to him, he took another drag as he listened to the person next to him get a cigarette as well. It was silent for a beat, a thick uneasy tension in the air as Lupin tried to gather the nerve to speak up.

“How……how bad is it?”

The thief finally asked his usually, confident and chipper tone now soft and unsure.

“It’s……it’s not looking to good. We’re trying everything we can to make the bleeding stop but…..”

A scratchy deep voice, belonging to his partner Jigen, responded to his question. Lupin’s grip on his cigarette and the balcony tightened more his knuckles slightly white from the strain. Light grey eyes flickered over to his companion, meeting somber dark brown eyes filled with frustration and exhaustion. Lupin took in Jigen’s appearance noting that his usual hat was missing, instead his dark black bangs covered his eyes. However they were messy as if they’d been swiped through in the gunslinger’s anxious frustration. His suit much like Lupin’s was a mess of blood and wrinkled to hell and back. His eyes were tired and his expression drawn tight in his irritation.

All in all Jigen was just as much of a mess as Lupin.

“Who’s with him now?”

Lupin asked forcing the shakiness from his voice however it wavered by the end of his sentence. If Jigen noticed he didn’t comment on it.

“Goemon’s with him right now and Fujiko is helping him in my stead for the moment.”

Jigen replied taking a deep drag of his cigarette. Lupin gave a small noise of acknowledgement, knowing that the samurai and cat bulger would keep an eye on the inspector. Turning his eyes back to the streets Lupin couldn’t help but wonder how the night which was once a normal routine heist had taken such a horrific turn for the worst.

~~~~~
It was a simple heist. Just a quick in and out of another rich man’s home with his priceless riches in his and his gangs hands. It was supposed to be a piece of cake.
However it turned out to be much more challenging than it was supposed to be.
The heist had ended up getting complicated, the man who they were robbing having connections to the underworld of crime. The man known as Jonathan McCain wasn’t exactly the innocent man that he’d made himself to be. No underneath the supposed timid and cowardly persona was actually an unhinged lunatic. McCain was nothing more than a crazy man who wore his usual face like a facade and Lupin had underestimated him. This mistake was what made their heist go pear shaped. And to add more to the complex situation the gang had of course been tracked down by the inspector who was quickly thrown into the chaos that had broken out. Pops as soon as he realized the severity of the situation had quickly intervened and teamed up with them to get the group out of the mad man’s home. The group of five had fought through security and hired henchmen to try and get out, the original heist now completely forgotten. It was while the group had finally found the escape route and started to make a break for it that it’d happened.
Lupin was running, the priceless thing that he’d stolen in his inner jacket pocket after having managing to nick it while dodging bullets. He had managed to make a jump only for it to fall out of his pocket. Lupin hadn’t really thought about it, despite hearing Jigen’s shouts telling him to forget about it. He’d went to go and grab it again not noticing the gun that had been aimed at him. But the others had. He’d heard Fujiko scream and Jigen and Goemon’s shouts of his name as the loud explosive bang of the gun going off filled the air. It was at that moment that everything seemed to slow down. The thief turned realizing that he wouldn’t be able to get both the treasure and dodge the bullet, an uncharacteristic split second of hesitating on his part before his vision was filled with browns and tans covering a familiar figure.
Zenigata.
The sound of a bullet ripping through flesh and bone, the strong scent of blood filled the air, shocked dark brown eyes widening before the sight of Zenigata’s body beginning to fall filled his vision. Lupin felt like everything came to a halting stop and his body moved forward as his vision tunneled.
“POPS-!!!”
A scream tore from him as he went to catch the collapsing inspector. The thief barely managed to catch him as the two began to crumble to the ground. Lupin’s gaze frantically looked over the injured man and he swore his heart dropped out of his chest.
Blood.
Pop’s chest was stained in it, a horrible painting of crimson growing on his shirt at a rapid pace. His usually tan face was extremely pale and his eyes were filled with agony. Lupin stared at the sight, his entire being suddenly filled with a rage that he’d ever rarely felt. Sharp grey hues snapped up in the direction where the shooter was, seeing the hitman who had committed the deed. Lupin didn’t think, he only reacted on pure instinct. The hitman didn’t even realize that Lupin was already moving until the tall, monkey like man tackled him in a vicious and brutal manner. He didn’t notice his surroundings, didn’t notice that Jigen, Goemon and Fujiko had rushed over to them. Didn’t notice how Fujiko and Goemon had went to try and stop Zenigata’s bleeding. All he noticed was the man in his grasp and the ungodly need to make him suffer for what he’d just did.
‘He shot him. He shot Pops….’
The thought vicious and poisonous hissed in his head making the thief strangle the man under him.
'He hurt Pops, he hurt one of mine. I’m going to kill him with my bare hands-’
The murderous thoughts swirled as his body went into autopilot. Lupin would have killed him if he wasn’t grabbed from behind and yanked off of the gunner. With a livid snarl the thief struggled against the arms that were holding onto him.
“Lupin-!LUPIN STOP!”
A voice shouted in his ear making him pause in his fury driven actions.
Jigen.
It was Jigen talking to him. Jigen holding him back and dragging him away.
“Come on man we’ve got to go, we’ve got to get Pops out of here!”
Jigen said his voice gruff and filled with a hard edge as he dragged Lupin away from the now unconscious hitman for hire. Lupin turned his head angry that Jigen would even allow this scummy bastard off the hook when he caught sight of the gunman’s face. Jigen’s expression much like Lupin’s was filled with an ungodly fury, his dark gaze staring at the unconscious shooter with a look of pure disdain.
“We’ll get what’s ours later, but we need to go boss.”
Jigen said his gaze finally landing on the man in his hold. The gunslinger’s expression was full of a dark promise, one that the thief had only seen a few times during their partnership over the years of working together. It was a look that told Lupin that McCain would not get away with this, that he would pay for this. McCain would get what was coming to him, because Lupin knew that if he didn’t get to the rat first then Jigen most certainly would.
It was that reassurance that made Lupin stop his struggles against Jigen’s hold and allowed him to turn his back on the unconscious form. The duo rushed to the trio that was waiting for them. Goemon was pressing down on Zenigata’s chest where he bled out while Fujiko watched over them should anything else happen. Once they saw Lupin and Jigen coming back to them they relaxed a bit. Four pairs of eyes met before the group worked quickly to grab Zenigata and help him out of this God forsaken place. After that it was a bit of a blur to Lupin, just flashes of moments that would haunt him forever.
The Fiat speeding through the streets to get to their safe house.
Goemon’s hands overlapping his as they both pressed down to stop the bleeding.
The growing puddle of crimson that stained the seats and his hands.
Jigen and Fujiko’s voices speaking rapidly about what they would do once inside the safe house.
All of it burned into Lupin’s mind as he and his gang moved the now unconscious inspector out of the car and into the building. As soon as they were through the door Jigen and Fujiko were on the move. Goemon helped Lupin set Zenigata down so the gunslinger and samurai could get to work. Fujiko had went to grab the medical supplies from the bathroom cabinet while Jigen and Goemon tore off Pop’s trenchcoat and shirt. Lupin meanwhile just watched, his mind unable to believe that this was actually happening. Grey hues zoned in on the large body of his rival. After years of being chased by Zenigata it seemed almost impossible that something like this could happen to him. Zenigata was in a way larger than life, his presence was lively and always demanded attention in some way. A man who had been through hell and the ends of the Earth to chase down Lupin and the gang. He was almost invincible in some way. Yet now Lupin was having the harsh realities of the world being thrown into his face. Pops once full of life was now extremely pale. His lips were stained copper colored, and his chest rose and fell in light and uneven ways. His eyes were closed, and he was covered in blood, the bullet wound bleeding and not seeming to stop anytime soon.
'He’s going to die…..’
Lupin felt his stomach roll as the realization hit him. Suddenly the room felt too crowded, felt too small and before he even thought about it he was already leaving the room.
~~~~~

Lupin jumped when he felt Jigen touch his shoulder.

“Hey……you’re uh….”

The gunslinger started to say gesturing to his face. The thief blinked and went to wipe at his face only to come to the realization that he was crying. Tears, large and fat rolled down them silently, making Lupin embarrassed. He didn’t cry, he shouldn’t be crying and yet……

He thought about Jigen who always stood by his side no matter what. He thought about Goemon who stayed with them and kept them safe. He thought about Fujiko and how she watched over the three of them. He thought about Zenigata and how he was always there whenever they needed him.

Zenigata who chased him to the ends of the Earth.

Zenigata who was the kindest man Lupin had ever met.

Zenigata who was always doing things like protecting him and his gang from harm.

Lupin felt the tears run faster as a sudden bitterness hit him. Zenigata was always shaking things up at the most inconvenient of times. He was always doing things that threw Lupin through a loop and threw him off kilter. Zenigata had a role that he needed to play, a role that no one else could ever fill. He was supposed to be the inspector who was in charge of arresting him, he was supposed to be the cop who didn’t care about him other than to throw him behind bars. Not the man who would die for him and the gang, not the man who cared about a group of criminals.

Yet he did.

Zenigata Koichi was the man who cared as well as the cop, the man who would die for him and the others because he followed his heart more than the supposed rules made for their roles.

And it was because of this that Pops was possibly dying right now in the next room.

Lupin sucked in a sharp breath and wiped at his eyes more trying to get the tears to stop but it wasn’t possible. Not when a member of his group was dying, not when he was losing someone who was so important to him.

Not when he was the one who put him in this position.

The thief crumbled a bit and Jigen didn’t hesitate to go and steady his companion. As soon as Lupin was within range the man clung to his partner. Jigen stiffened for a second before wrapping his arms around Lupin. The two stayed in this position for a while, with Lupin breaking down silently while Jigen gave him the support. The gunslinger didn’t comment on it, knowing that Lupin wasn’t taking this easily. Hell none of them really were. Much like the gentleman thief, Jigen, Goemon and Fujiko were just as messed up. The older inspector had grown on all of them and the thought of him no longer being there was a thought they didn’t ever want to become a reality. Yet tonight it seemed as if their worst nightmare was coming true.

After what felt like an eternity Lupin finally pulled away from Jigen, his eyes puffy but nevertheless he was pulled back together. The gunman patted his partner’s arm.

“It’ll be okay. Pops isn’t going to up and die on us. Not when he’s got Goemon on his case.”

Jigen said to try and reassure the other man. They both knew that there was no guarantees of Pops making it but it still brought them both a sense of comfort.

“You’re right…..he’ll be okay…..”

Lupin muttered offering a smile that was more of a grimace. Jigen took it anyway and gave him a smile back before they both jumped slightly at the sound of the door opening to the balcony. Heads snapping up their gazes landed on Goemon and Fujiko. The samurai’s white kimono was stained red, his sleeves splashed from him pushing them up while he worked. His gaze was tired yet calm as he spoke.

“We got the bleeding to stop. He’s going to be okay.”

The samurai stated yet his shoulders and gaze showed just how relieved he was. Lupin and Jigen seemed to collapse into themselves, the thief letting out a relieved yet slightly wet laugh while Jigen ran his hands through his hair a small smile on his face. Fujiko stepped around Goemon and went to stand next to Lupin while Goemon went to step next to Jigen.

“He’s very lucky to be alive. I honestly thought that….”

Fujiko said trailing off quietly, her sentence being left unsaid to the men around her. But they all knew what she meant and had shared her fears of nearly losing Zenigata. Lupin looked at her and noticed that she too had puffy eyes. It sent a shock to his system to know that he wasn’t the only one who broke down. The thief was interrupted from his revelation by Jigen.

“So now that Pops is going to be okay, I think it’s best to discuss something.”

The gunslinger stated his tone serious as he drew the attention of the others to him. A shared look of understanding passed between the four of them as they tensed.

“I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m thinking that McCain needs a talking to of sorts.”

Jigen said his expression hard as he said McCain’s name.

“I agree with you gunman. He can’t be allowed to get away with what he’s done.”

Goemon spoke up his own voice sharp. It was rare for the usually calm samurai to sound so angry but given the circumstances it was understandable.

“Honestly he really deserves it. He was the fool who went for a thief’s prized possession.”

Fujiko said her tone light yet the three men knew that underneath it laid a hard edge that unless you knew the female thief you would have missed it. The three criminals turned their gazes towards Lupin, waiting for his thoughts to their unspoken question. Lupin placed a finger on his chin in thought, seemingly thinking about it.

“Ya know, I think you all are absolutely right. McCain needs to learn that messing with a thief and what’s theirs isn’t the wisest decision.”

Lupin said his tone professional and chipper in a way. Yet it was quite clear that the look in his gaze was hard and sharp. Like a wolf in sheep’s clothing, the lanky man was barely keeping that earlier fury he’d experienced before at bay. The four exchanged sharp and deadly looks to one another, a silent agreement between them.

“Till then we’ll just have to take care of Pops and make sure that he heals up alright.”

The gentleman thief said pushing himself from the balcony he’d been leaning against and starting to make his way inside. Jigen followed close behind him as well as Goemon and Fujiko. Once they were all inside Lupin locked the door to the balcony and made his way towards Zenigata’s room. He had to see for himself that he was okay. The others went their separate ways, leaving the thief be as they retired from the rough events of the evening. Lupin stepped into the room and quickly scanned it before finally landing on the limp form of the inspector. Zenigata was laying on his back, his chest naked and covered in bandages. The medical supply kit was sitting beside the small bedside table, having been put away back in its box. Lupin stepped further into the room grabbing a chair and setting it up beside the bed. Once seated the thief gently reached over and grasped one of the in inspector’s hands and looked him over.

Pops was out cold, his breathing still light and wheezing but it was easier than it had been. His face was still pale and his hand felt cold, yet the movement of his chest put Lupin at ease. Zenigata was okay, and that was all that mattered to him. Gazing at Pops with a small heartfelt look Lupin ran his thumb over the hairy knuckles of his rival in a soothing manner.

“It’s going to be okay now Pops. I won’t let anyone hurt you.”

The younger man said softly, bringing the hand his was holding up to his lips and giving it a gentle kiss. It was always the same when it came to them. Yet at the same time it never truly was. They had their roles that they played, their games of cat and mouse that they had between them. They were each other’s rivals in the world and yet at the same time they had other roles too.

Zenigata was the cop who chased Lupin. He was also the cop who followed his heart, and did what he believed was right. Pops was the man who cared too much at times and who always had his back whenever things got too bad for him to handle alone. The unassigned shadow that always watched over him and made sure that he was safe. The man who was kind to him even when he didn’t deserve it. Yet he wasn’t the only one who got this protection and kindness.

His partners got it as well.

Jigen, Goemon and Fujiko were also in this category for Pops. They too were apart of Zenigata’s protection and watchful eye. They all where under the care of Zenigata Koichi when it really came down to it.

And just like Lupin, his partners also shared his feelings towards the inspector.

Lupin squeezed the older man’s hand and placed another kiss onto it, recalling the faces of his gang on the balcony and their unspoken agreement.

Jigen whose eyes were hard and sharp, holding that deadly promise of making McCain pay for hurting Pops.

Goemon whose entire being hid the raging hurricane of vengeance on behalf of the inspector.

Fujiko whose eyes held pure disdain and disgust for the man who had caused Zenigata to nearly lose his life.

All three of them wanting nothing more than to make the man suffer in some way or another. Just as he wanted to.

Zenigata may have their backs but they too had his back.

And it’d remain this way till the end of time.

After all……

It was one of their roles to play.

*OT5 make brain go brrrrrrrrrr. Okay so honestly I kinda just wrote this up to kinda get a feel for writing for these five wonderful fools. And I also wanted an excuse to write protective Lupgang over Pops because I absolutely live for it sue me lol. Also it’s implied that the five of them are somewhat romantically interested/involved with each other yet for the most part I focused on the LupZeni, JigLup and ZeniJig in this. (I’m not used to writing for so many pairings please bare with me). Anyways if any y'all read this I hope you enjoyed it!!!*

“I thought I’d find you here.”

Zenigata took a seat beside Jigen at the bar, flagging down the bartender and ordering himself a drink. He lit a cigarette as he sat there, shifting his eyes in the direction of the gunman.

Jigen tipped his fedora at him, his smile wide and all Zenigata was allowed to see. “Oh, hey Pops. Did ya need somethin’?”

Zenigata bit down on the filter and took in a breath of smoke. He let it out through his nose and allowed his gaze to fall from Jigen to the cherrywood countertop before him. “I’ve got a question for you,” he said.

“Oh, yeah?” Jigen raised an eyebrow, leaning toward Zenigata as if he were trying to hear him better. “An’ what’s that?”

Zenigata slumped his shoulders, hesitating for a moment before he continued speaking. “Were you the one who killed Brandon Mulroy, Kaleb Neufeld, John Strahl, and Rich Demelo?”

“Hm? Where in the world did you hear those names?” Jigen’s face dropped. He tried his best to stay casual, but the cigarette in his mouth still seemed to falter. “Truth be told, I didn’t think you knew they existed.”

“I found them in a sealed file,” Zenigata admitted. “And while the description of their deaths was rudimentary, I recognized the style anyway. I need to know, Jigen. Were you the one who killed them?”

Jigen pulled the cigarette from his lips and crushed it between his fingers. He looked away. “Hardly. I wasn’t quite Daisuke back then, was I?”

“Jigen, please. Answer the question.”

“Why?”

“Why what?”

“Why do you want to know? Why should I tell you?”

Zenigata opened his mouth but paused when the bartender arrived to give him his drink. The whiskey burned as it went down, granting him the courage he needed to continue.

“I’m only asking because I need to understand. Before I allow anything to happen between us, Daisuke. I have to know you’re not the monster your files make you out to be.”

Jigen’s face grew shadowed, his expression haunted and distant. He took a sip of his own drink and seemed to slump in on himself, shoulders pulled inward.

“Monster…” he echoed. “I’m afraid I might disappoint ya, Pops.”

Zenigata sipped his glass and sighed. “Just explain. Please.”

Jigen let out a breath, staring into the amber liquid of his glass. “They killed my brother. I had to get back at them. I had to make them feel the pain I felt when I learned what happened to him.”

“They executed him, right?”

Jigen turned his gaze to Zenigata, lacking the energy to hide his eyes or the sadness present within them.

“Yeah,” he mumbled, voice ragged. “They took ‘em to a field and shot him in the back of the head. Claimed he stole from them. All of it was a mistake. They were just kids.”

“So were you,” Zenigata laid a careful hand on Jigen’s shoulder and pulled him closer. “You were what— seventeen when it happened?”

“Old enough to know what I was doing.”

He pulled another cigarette from his jacket and lit it with the flick of his lighter.

Zenigata watched him as he took in the first breath, noting the hard lines of his face and just how old Jigen looked despite his younger age.

This was a man who had lived a hard life. He’d done things and seen things Zenigata couldn’t even begin to imagine, and here he was bringing up the worst of it.

He’d be lying if he said he didn’t feel guilty, even if it was important for him to understand.

“Come back with me to my hotel.”

Jigen’s expression widened. He lifted the cigarette from his mouth and held it in front of his chest. “What?”

“You heard me,” Zenigata smiled, trying his best to be reassuring. “Come back with me.”

“You sure?” Jigen leaned away, though it was more out of confusion than anything else. “You were just— you’re sure?”

Zenigata nodded. “I wouldn’t have invited you if I wasn’t.”

“But I’m a criminal. I’ve killed people—”

“So has Lupin,” Zenigata said. “And that hasn’t stopped me yet. You’re a good man, Jigen. I know you don’t take these things lightly.”

Jigen’s eyes were alight with something that may have been tears, though he hid them before Zenigata could be sure. His cheeks grew crimson as he tugged on the brim of his hat, yanking it down to better hide his embarrassment.

“Okay.”

Zenigata grinned at him and gulped down the rest of his drink, placing the glass on the counter and offering Jigen his hand, beaming. “Let’s get going, then.”

~

Zenigata found Jigen on the bed when he returned, lounging against the headrest like he owned the place.

He had a cigarette pressed between his lips, the tip of it dull and lifeless, like it had yet to be lit. One of his hands sat behind his head, pushing his hat down over his eyes and giving Jigen the appearance of a deadly criminal who had snuck in through the window.

He was surprised when he didn’t smell cigarette smoke, the room freshly cleaned and unmarred by anyone’s touch.

Jigen smiled as Zenigata stepped through the threshold, the scarlet of his blush peeking out from just under the brim of his fedora.

“Hey, Pops. Long time no see.”

Zenigata untied his trench coat and threw it over a nearby chair, his own smile amused and inviting.

“How’d you get in? I thought the plan was for you to sneak in after I got back.”

Jigen shrugged. “I thought this would be more entertaining. Are ya disappointed?”

“Not at all,” Zenigata said truthfully. He approached the bed and looked down at the younger man. “How do you want to do this?”

Jigen flicked the cigarette back into his hand and tucked it into his jacket, sitting up on the bed so he could remove his tie and throw his jacket on the floor by the window. His hat stayed firm over his bangs, shading Jigen’s face and hiding the look of his eyes.

It wasn’t long before he had himself on his knees, pushing his body up within Zenigata’s reach, smirking. He wrapped his arms carefully around his partner’s neck and basked in the expression it earned him. Zenigata’s cheeks were warm and his mouth was hanging wide open, spluttering for something to say.

Jigen’s eyes glinted dangerously. It was the same sneer he carried anytime he pulled his pistol— mysterious and deadly. Like an assassin coming to kill him in the night. Or an Angel of Death swooping in to carry away his soul.

It made his spine tingle.

Jigen smelled like the rich scent of tobacco smoke and bourbon, musty and earthy like a Spring day after a rainfall. He wanted to memorize that scent. If only to remember this moment — and this night — forever.

“You doin’ okay, Inspector?”

Zenigata coughed and pulled himself out of his thoughts, reminding himself to stay in the moment. He averted his gaze, but was pulled back in just as quickly.

“I’m fine,” he said. “You’re just very… striking. You know that?”

Jigen smirked. “So I’ve been told.”

Something in Jigen’s expression changed, and his grip against Zenigata slackened ever so slightly. His arms hung casually over the top of Zenigata’s shoulders, no longer as noticeable as they once were before. “You’re still… sure you want this to happen, right? You do realize who I am, don’t you?”

“Course I do,” Zenigata assured him. “I told you where I was staying, didn’t I? If I thought you were a threat, neither of us would be here right now. Not like this, anyway.”

“This isn’t some scheme to locate Lupin or arrest me, is it?”

Zenigata shook his head. “My handcuffs are in my jacket,” he said. “I won’t touch them. Not unless you want me to.”

Jigen sighed, nodding. “Okay. I believe you. I just wanted to be sure.”

“I know.” Zenigata smiled. He ran the tips of his fingers along the side of Jigen’s face, staring into his captivating eyes and brushing locks of dark hair to the side of his forehead. “I want you to be comfortable here, okay? You don’t have to worry. Not on nights like this one.”

Jigen snorted, covering his mouth with his fist to try and hide his amusement. “You’re okay with just about anything when you’re off the clock, aren’t you, Pops?”

Zenigata could feel his cheeks burning. He frowned, and Jigen laughed again.

“I wouldn’t say anything,” he murmured. “But I am fine with spending time with you like this. We should do it more often.”

“Sure,” Jigen said. “I’d be okay with that, though finding the time to do this might be difficult, given our general lives.”

“We’ll figure it out,” Zenigata said. “Now, kiss me, you stubborn gunman. It’s all I’ve been thinking about since we left the bar.”

The glint in Jigen’s eyes brightened and he grinned, knuckles caressing the back of Zenigata’s neck lovingly. “I thought you’d never ask.”

He pressed himself tighter against Zenigata’s torso, brushing his nose with his partner’s before finally closing the gap. The smell of cigarettes and alcohol intensified as Jigen pulled them both forward, guiding Zenigata down so they could reach each other better. His beard tickled Zenigata’s chin, pulling a small chuckle from the base of his throat.

Jigen’s hands were warm, his fingers making their way up Zenigata’s chest to his collar. He made quick work of the buttons, sliding the fabric of his shirt backwards to give him a full view of Zenigata’s body.

Zenigata scrambled to catch up, sufficiently distracted due to the man in his arms and the quickly growing erection in his pants.

He broke the kiss once Jigen was exposed, hands pressed against his stomach as he leaned forward and kissed along his neck down to his shoulder.

Jigen hummed as he tipped backwards, enjoying the feel of Zenigata’s lips and the warmth of his arousal as it spread between his legs.

He trailed his hands down the length of Zenigata’s body, admiring the hard-packed muscles of his abs and the intense heat of his skin. He was nearly as broad as Goemon and probably just as strong. He imagined it came with the life Zenigata lived, his arms strong and his chest wide; his muscles built through years of running and games of cat and mouse

“You and Goemon should spar sometime,” Jigen said suddenly. “I wanna know who would win.”

“Goemon would,” Zenigata paused, his hands grasping Jigen’s hips so he could move him further up the bed. “What brought that on?”

Jigen shrugged. “Jus’ thinking out loud. You do realize you’re about his size, right? You have similar builds.“

“Doesn’t matter,” Zenigata muttered. “Goemon is a fully trained warrior. I’m not nearly as skilled.”

Jigen furrowed his brow, reaching up to pull Zenigata closer to him. “Don’t sell yourself so short. You’re the only man who can keep up with Lupin, remember?”

Zenigata smirked and allowed himself to be drawn up over Jigen’s lap. He shook his head. “You don’t seem to have any problems keeping up with him.”

“That’s different,” Jigen said. “Comes with the job. Gotta learn to keep up if I want to stay with him.”

“I think he’d slow down for you. If you asked him to.”

“Maybe,” Jigen slipped a finger into one of the belt loops by Zenigata’s hip, working his fingers toward the clasp of his pants. “He’d do the same for you too, you know.”

“I doubt it,” Zenigata smiled sheepishly, imagining a scene where he did exactly that. In his mind, it didn’t go well. “He loves our game too much.”

“You mean you both love it—”

“You do too,” Zenigata leaned down and pressed another kiss to Jigen’s lips, laughing lightly as his fedora hit the bed and fell backwards. “Don’t lie.”

“Never said I didn’t,” Jigen whispered. “You’re a fun man to run from. I get the appeal.”

Zenigata’s smile turned to a smirk. He ran his fingers through Jigen’s hair and felt him purr low in his throat, the look on his face radiant and adoring. “And you’re a fun man to chase.”

“I’m not runnin’ now. Not when I finally have you where I want you.”

Zenigata laughed, leaning back so he could get a better look at the man below him. “I think you mean the opposite. It seems I have you where I want you, Daisuke.”

“Same thing,” Jigen said. “Undress me, Inspector. I want you inside of me.”

“Koichi.” Zenigata said softly. “Call me, Koichi.”

Jigen’s smile reached his eyes and transformed him into the kind hearted man Zenigata believed him to be. His voice was fond as he spoke, his tone light and adoring. “Undress me, Koichi. I’m tired of waiting.”

He popped the button of Zenigata’s slacks and tugged the fabric down his thighs to his shins, beaming at Zenigata’s tented underwear and passing a hand carefully over his dick.

Zenigata shuddered and felt himself twitch, his face as bright as the rubies Lupin had stolen over the years. His mouth was frozen between a smile and a frown, earning a satisfied huff from the gunman on the bed.

“Tease.”

Zenigata finished removing his pants and turned his attention to the button on Jigen’s slacks. He didn’t hesitate as he released it, lifting Jigen’s hips so he could pile them on the floor.

His boxers were purple, the lighter shade complimenting the dark hue of his button-down. It made Zenigata chuckle.

“You match your underwear to your shirt?”

The blush on Jigen’s face darkened and he looked away, but only for a moment. “Shut up.”

“That’s adorable.”

“Shut up.”

“Mine have hearts today. They kind of match my jacket, so we’re not really all that different.”

Jigen burst out laughing, covering his face with his hands like this was all too much for him to handle. “And you call me adorable. This isn’t really the time, Pops.”

“It made you laugh,” Zenigata said. “I like to hear you laugh. It’s nice.”

Jigen peaked at him through his fingers, his face red. “You’re too much. Seriously. It’s gonna kill me.”

“What’s it you and your group like to say? That you’re immortal?”

Jigen’s laugh repeated itself, and Zenigata felt his heart stutter, stopping in his chest for the briefest of moments.

“It’s a figure of speech. Or at least, it’s supposed to be. Lupin likes to think we are. With how we live and how he pushes us, anyway. Sometimes I even think he believes it.”

Zenigata nodded, knowing exactly what Jigen meant. “Hey, what’s life without a little risk, right?”

Jigen shrugged. He fingered the waistband of his boxers and began moving them down past his hips. “You’re spending too much time with Lupin thinking like that.”

Zenigata saw what he was doing and did the same, finally springing free from the cramped material of his boxers. “You’re one to talk,” he said, taking in the image that was Daisuke Jigen.

He was beautiful; all sharp lines and dark hair, with long limbs and slim features full of life and change. It was an image Zenigata had only ever dreamed of; a fantasy that had finally come to fruition.

There was a glistening wetness between the gunman’s legs. It darkened the hair around his already swollen clit and gave Zenigata a picture he never wanted to forget.

"You’re really enjoying this.” He said, his expression wide.

“Course I am,” Jigen shifted under Zenigata’s weight, slightly embarrassed. “You’re what Lupin would call 'my type.’”

“Is that right?” Zenigata asked. He smiled, showing his teeth. “You find me attractive?”

Jigen sighed, smirking. “Don’t get too full of yourself, Pops. You’re just very… alluring. It’s distracting.”

“But you are enjoying this, right?”

Jigen chuckled, nodding. “Yes, Koichi. You’re very handsome.”

“Good,” Zenigata looked down at Jigen, his hand hovering but not yet moving to act. “Can I…?”

Jigen saw where his hand was hovering and nodded desperately. “Yes,” he breathed. “Please.”

Zenigata trailed his fingers along the inside of Jigen’s thigh, slowly ebbing his way toward what his partner wanted.

Jigen bucked his hips to get closer to Zenigata’s caress, the radiating warmth of his arousal almost too much for him to handle. He whined the moment Zenigata finally touched him, squeezing his eyes shut and leaning into the rough pads of his fingers.

Zenigata stroked along the top and sides of Jigen’s clit, working his way down his labia to the opening beneath.

Jigen bit his lip as he pushed into Zenigata’s touch, silently guiding him on where to go and what to do.

“Is this okay?” Zenigata asked.

Jigen pressed an arm against his eyes and nodded. “Yup. Yes. You’re perfect. Keep… keep that up.”

Zenigata nodded, continuing to run his fingers against Jigen’s eager warmth, growing wetter as Zenigata rubbed and focused in on where he was directed.

Pre-cum dripped down the side of Zenigata’s dick, the organ pulsating and aching for relief.

“Might wanna get yourself ready,” Jigen said. “I don’t think either of us will last too much longer.”

“Actually, would you—”

Zenigata paused, a bit too shy to say it.

Jigen seemed to understand what he meant anyway. “Yeah,” he said. “You want me to do it?”

“Please,” Zenigata begged. “I want you to touch me.”

Jigen’s smile was wide. He nodded happily, and sat up on his elbows to get a better look at his partner’s magnetic beauty. “Of course. Where are your supplies?”

“In the bedside table,” Zenigata gestured in the general direction of the drawer beside them, his other hand still working carefully between Jigen’s legs.

Jigen huffed against the feeling of Zenigata’s strokes, his face red and his body moving closer to Zenigata on instinct. He leaned over to pull at the drawer, searching for a condom and a small bottle of lube. When he found them, he broke the condom’s packaging and moved to place it over Zenigata’s cock.

Zenigata moaned through the sensitivity of Jigen’s touch, and leaned forward to press his warm face against the nape of Jigen’s neck. He paused as Jigen opened the bottle and used the lube to run one of his hands up and down the length of Zenigata’s shaft.

Zenigata savored the feeling until it became too much, lifting his hips to provide the gunman better access.

When he felt the heart-racing thrill of an approaching climax, he pulled away, panting.

“Wait,” he said. “You… you should stop. Before I disappoint you.”

“Impossible.” Jigen pressed a kiss against Zenigata’s hairline, one of his hands gently caressing the base of his jaw. He ran his hands through Zenigata’s hair and stared at him affectionately. “You ready?”

Zenigata nodded greedily, his heart pounding so hard it was almost all he could hear. His hands grasped at empty air, hungry and excited to explore Jigen’s body.

Jigen chuckled as he pushed himself backwards, laying back against the pillows so Zenigata had room for what came next.

Zenigata let his torso tip forward, leaning down over Jigen to kiss his lips and grip his pelvis to move it upwards.

His hands clumsily worked their way along Jigen’s frame, supporting him as he leaned forward and prepared them both for the first thrust.

Jigen gasped the moment Zenigata entered him, his hands pressed against the Inspector’s sides as he accepted the momentum and moved with it. It didn’t take long before the both of them were fully pressed together, moaning and whining through their connection.

Zenigata found his rhythm as Jigen wrapped his arms around his shoulders, quietly whispering his directions as they moved steadily toward a climax.

“You’re so warm,” Zenigata breathed, hands finding their purchase against Jigen’s ass. He gave his flesh a good squeeze and took satisfaction in the high-pitched squeak it earned him. “God, Daisuke. I can’t… can’t take it.”

“Getting close, Pops?” Jigen asked, grinning.

Zenigata’s blush darkened and prompted him to hide against his partner’s shoulder. He huffed, his voice breathless. “Shut up.”

Jigen’s laugh was like music, interrupted as Zenigata picked up the pace and his moans became increasingly louder.

Jigen was right there with him, angling his hips to hit just the right spot inside of him. The feeling between his legs grew continuously intense, building to what he hoped would be relief and resolution.

Zenigata was the first to lose it, giving one last powerful thrust before he groaned and came with enough force to fill the condom.

Jigen pulled him forward as his body stiffened and finally gave out, twitching and pulsating around Zenigata’s quickly waning erection.

They fell apart on each side of the bed, huffing and breathing through the last of their arousal.

“Fuck…” Jigen sighed. “That was fun.”

Zenigata nodded, running a hand down his face as he processed what just happened.

“Yes it was,” he said. “I’m glad you decided to come along.”

“I’m glad I decided to join you,” Jigen said. “To tell you the truth, I never thought this would happen.”

“Why’s that?” Zenigata asked. He turned his gaze to look at Jigen and swung his legs off the bed to grab supplies from the bathroom.

Jigen lifted his hat off the mattress and plunked it back down against his hair. “‘Cause you’re you and I’m me. I jus’ never thought it was an option.”

Zenigata stood and dipped his head through the nearby bathroom door, running a washcloth under the sink’s faucet. “Is that because of what I said at the bar?”

“Maybe. I’m not really sure.”

Zenigata turned back into the room, peeling off the condom and throwing it in the bedside trash can. “You’re not a monster, Jigen. I promise.”

“How can you believe that?” Jigen asked. He sat himself against the headboard behind him and leaned over to snatch his cigarettes and lighter from the pocket of his jacket.

“Because I know you. I know you don’t take death lightly.”

“But I still killed those kids. They didn’t deserve what I did to them.”

“That’s true,” Zenigata said. He sat back down beside Jigen and ran his fingers carefully against the edge of his forehead. “But you were just a kid yourself. I know you wouldn’t make that mistake a second time. Not without proper provocation.”

Jigen’s face contorted and he hid his eyes under the brim of his hat. “I’ve killed people, Koichi. Are you sure you can handle that?”

Zenigata nodded and lifted Jigen’s hat so he could steal a quick, chaste kiss. “I’ve killed people too, you know. It tends to happen in my line of work, so I understand. Believe me.”

“I do,” Jigen said. “I just—”

“You feel guilty. I know. It’s why I’m confident this will work between us.”

“Really?” Jigen sighed, slumping his shoulders. He tugged a cigarette from his pack and placed it between his teeth, throwing open his lighter. He exhaled smoke as Zenigata leaned away, nodding.

“Of course,” he said. “It’s worked so far with Lupin. I don’t see why our relationship would be all that different.”

“I guess so,” Jigen said. “I just don’t want this to hurt you. Or me for that matter.”

“I know,” Zenigata said. “I’m gonna do my best to keep that from happening. You deserve happiness, Daisuke. You know?”

Jigen smiled, chuckling. “You sound like Lup,” he said. “How in the world did I get so goddamn lucky?”

Zenigata shrugged, using the washcloth to clean both of them up. “I tend to ask myself the same thing,” he murmured. “I feel like I’ve hit the jackpot.”

“Even with our game?”

Zenigata giggled. “The game is what led me to this,” he said. He wrapped an arm around Jigen and pulled him into his lap. “It’s part of the reason I love it so much.”

“Me too,” Jigen said. “You okay with continuing it tomorrow?”

“Definitely,” Zenigata said. He tightened his grip around Jigen’s torso and pulled the blanket up firmly over their laps. “But let’s enjoy this moment while we have it, okay?”

Jigen intertwined their fingers and smiled.

“Okay.”
