#jk rowling
I decided to write the article I needed, not the one I planned. #WritingCommunity
A lot of my greatest artistic heroes have been mentally or physically ill- Frida Kahlo, Micheal Jackson, Freddie Mercury, etc. It’s not a secret that pain can be the gateway drug to great art. JK Rowling, Carrie Fisher, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Sylvia Plath; they all are great writers who also carried great pain within them.
But, on my days where I can’t get out of bed and don’t see any point to…
Is anyone else struggling to enjoy themselves in this fandom after all the transphobic terf shit JK has been spewing??
Fishing for brownie points for “representation” that doesn’t actually exist are we?
FUCK YES GOT MY POTTERMORE EMAIL.
happy birthday harry
now hurry the fuck up pottermore and give me the first damn clue
it’s 2020 and jk rowling still has less than ten named black characters throughout the seven books and two movies (or nine movies if you count it that way) of the harry potter and fantastic beasts franchise
lee jordan, dean thomas, angelina johnson, kingsley shacklebolt, blaise zabini (background slytherin who replaces crabbe in the last movie), leta lestrange, and seraphina piquery (madame president in fantastic beasts)
the fact that i felt the need to explain who the last two were says a lot
(edits were made to the above - originally i wrote dean twice and forgot leta. i also forgot yusuf kama, leta’s half-brother from crimes of grindelwald who i guarantee you forgot existed until now)
also, i can name the other people of colour on one hand. you’ve got cho chang, padma and parvati patil, and nagini in fantastic beasts. so that’s X black people and four asian people. no characters of any other ethnicities that i can think of - and before you jump in with ‘why would there be a native american or latine character in britain’, i will remind you that wizards can teleport and two of the movies are set in america
meanwhile, how many characters implicitly written as white can you think of from the books, or cast as white in the movies? how many of themhave names? how much narrative significance are they given?
