i think the common idea that silver doesn’t “understand” the systemic issues that are the cause of the war and that’s partly why he ends it is a bit hard to believe. i think whether or not he understands the issues the reason why he feels he needs to end it is because he thinks the fight is hopeless, he thinks it’s going to go on forever until they are all dead, not because he thinks people are not systematically victimized / subjugated by england. at that point in the story he would have to be stupid to think that imo. he’s seen it. he’s in it. even if he doesn’t have past experiences with being subjugated by an empire (which, hm, even if he just experienced poverty under its grip he would have had an experience). as far as i can see he thinks the resistance will be crushed and they will have all died for nothing. revolutions are built partly on hope and he just doesn’t have it

and you can certainly read him as just a guy who doesn’t “get it” if that’s what you want, i honestly don’t know what he gets and what he doesn’t get and that’s partly because we don’t know where he comes from and the life he’s lived before black sails and partly because he hardly ever states what he believes or thinks in an honest, direct way, the way flint does in s4 for example. but for a character to say “in my experience the world is a place of unending horrors” and for people to jump to “well he just doesn’t understand systemic violence” idk. he understands something. he “knows” its unending. his response to that learned conviction is to have no hope for something better and attach no meaning to anything, including his own story. to me that reads like someone who has been ground down by something that felt inevitable and too-powerful, and you can read that in many different ways, though i think his refusal to even tell flint where he’s from says something
