LIVE

HBO Max reached the 4th episode of “Julia” and they are still focusing on Julia Child placating the men around her.

  • There’s her prissy husband who is having difficulty accepting he is not a world famous artist.
  • Then her producer who still seemed annoy his one hit show is about cooking.
  • And the host of another show who bristles that his show isn’t as popular as Child’s.

Is this all they have to say about Julia Child? That she cow towed to men?!!

I guess I shouldn’t have asked. Before writing this post I decided to do some research about Child. I found an interesting article from Boston Magazine. (Link below)

It’s disappointing to learn someone you thought you respect wasn’t born perfect. While Julia Child broken new ground and gained respect for women as chefs and women on television… it sound like Child herself was far from a feminist. Even after gaining fame she felt men should still get preferential treatment over women.

And her (early) views on homosexually would not gain her many gay fans.

Once after attended a party in Boston, Child wrote, “(it was) peopled by 3 fags in an expensive house. We felt hopelessly square and left when decently possible”.

It wasn’t until the AIDS crisis that she softened her views, learning about all the gay men dying alone.

Well… I can be glad that eventually saw the error of her ways… but I’m not so sure I want to continue to watch the series.

Without Judith Jones, the world may never have known about the life of Anne Frank or the cuisine of Julia Child.

The legendary editor rescued Frank’s personal journal from a publisher’s reject pile and introduced her first-person account of the Holocaust as “The Diary of a Young Girl.”

She also spent months trying Child’s recipes that filled the pages of “Mastering the Art of French Cooking.”

Jones died today at her summer home in Walden, Vermont. She was 93.

MUSSELS, JULIA CHILD, AND THE MAINE COAST

Alright party people, I’ve officially screwed you. I’ve been in heaven for the past week and a half, on the coast of Maine. And what does one do while in heaven? Cook heavenly things. But what does one do in the a very dark kitchen when cooking at night? Not take any pictures. Since I try to only take pictures in natural light, I wasn’t able to document my cooking adventures. But I must say, cooking goes a lot faster when you don’t have to stop every step of the way to photograph the food!

The most exciting moment was when my dad, A, and I went to a nearby beach and dug up mussels. At home, I cooked them using my first Julia Child’s recipe ever - moules à la marinière - and they were truly unbelievable. That’s what you call living off the land (and the computer, for that internet recipe search).

We also made: Blueberry Muffins with fresh Maine blueberries, Spinach and Gruyere Quiche, Crab Salad, Pimiento Cheese, Blueberry Crumble, Mini Baked Potatoes with Crumbled Blue Cheese, Chocolate Chip Cookies, Oatmeal Raisin Cookies, Tomato, Corn, and Cheese Pie, Molten Lava Chocolate Cakes, and this wonderful drink A concocted with vodka, mint, lemon, and blood orange spritzer. Oh yeah, I almost forgot - we also made pizza and it was an absolute disaster… the kind of cooking disaster that requires steak knives to cut through the crust. So if you think learning to cook comes without serious blunders, think again. I’ve had infinite amounts of them.
