Les Misérables | Gavroche Thénardier Illustrated by Filiberto Mateldi (Italian edition, 1940)
As usual I’m here to share a new edition full of beautiful illustrations! It’s an Italian edition published in 1940 and illustrated by Filiberto Mateldi.
It may not be evident from the pictures, but it’s VERY small (15x19 cm)
I really like how the illustrations opposite each other fit so well like Eponine’s first meeting with Marius, Marius and Cosette meeting etc
AND THIS ICONIC MOMENT
More illustrations bc I don’t feel like I shared enough of them..
tried something but i’m not sure it worked haha
Misery meets the Ideal
“Should we continue to look upwards? Is the light we can see in the sky one of those which will presently be extinguished? The ideal is terrifying to behold, lost as it is in the depths, small, isolated, a pin-point, brilliant but threatened on all sides by the dark forces that surround it: nevertheless, no more in danger than a star in the jaws of the clouds.”
—Victor Hugo, Les Misérables vol. iv, bk. vii
