Ancient Worlds - BBC Two

Episode 4 “Return of the King”

Scenes from the Battle of Gaugamela, ivory relief (anonymous artist).

TheBattle of Gaugamela(alsoBattle of Arbela) took place in 331 BC between the forces of Alexander the Great of Macedon and the Persiansled by Darius III. It was a decisive victory for the Hellenic League that decided the fate of the Persian Empire. The battle took place near Gaugamela, close to the modern city ofMosul,Iraq.

The Hellenic League was heavily outnumbered but it emerged victorious due Alexander’s superior tactics and army. Many Persian soldiers lost their lives, so many that the enemy ensured that Darius would never again raise an imperial army. Some classical sources proclaim that one of the determinant factors in the Persian’s defeat against the Macedonians was king Darius: he realised that victory was hopeless, panicked and fled the battle before any victor had been decided. Another source accounts that Darius was abandoned by his men and not -as Macedonian propaganda would say- that he let his men down (picture n. 1, detail: Darius’ flight)

The relief was sculpted in the 18th century and it was inspired by a Charles Le Brun’s painting on the same subject.

Head of a man

Campania, 3rd century BC.

The head of a young man with wavy hair falling over the middle of the forehead. The physiognomic features correspond to one of the types of iconography of Alexander, a much earlier and better known example which is the bone portrait of the king found in the tomb of Philip II at Vergina (Archaeological Museum, Vergina).

The same image appears in a mosaic in the House of the Faun at Pompeii, depicting the battle of Alexander and Darius, assumed to be a reproduction of a painted original. That would have been the magnificent work mentioned by Pliny, painted by Philoxenes from Eretria for Cassander´s palace in Pella in the last years of Alexander´s life or shortly after his death. At the same time, the treatment of the terracotta to make it look like a work in bronze, such as the use of the chisel to mark pupils and irises, the small lines at the corners of the lips and the manner of portraying locks of hair, are characteristic of Italian work.

Would you love Macedonia as much as us? We just can’t get enough of the country, and this video is precisely why!⁣

We begin wild camping on the shores of Lake Prespa, sitting on the corner of three countries in one of the most beautiful locations we’ve ever had the privilege to camp.⁣

Then we head off in search of some abandoned buildings and end up at a former Yugoslavian hotel with a dark secret hiding inside.⁣

Finally we meet up with some super hospitable locals and join them for some Orthodox New Years Celebrations in true Balkan style!⁣

Big thanks to @undyingheads for letting us use their music too, if you haven’t already make sure you check them out

We enjoy pushing our van to its limits, so why not explore some of the most treacherous roads in the mountainous Southern regions of the country of N. Macedonia in this week’s episode of Rusty Roadtrips?⁣

Starting at the top of a hazardous mountain track complete with landslides, snow and ice, we make our way down and head East. We meet a friendly local man who shows us the way to an awesome mountainous area where we camp under the stars with the Greek border and Macedonia’s tallest mountain in sight.⁣

We then head further East, attempting to drive an even more perilous mountain track all in the hope of finding a shortcut to Lake Prespa.⁣

SUBLIME CINEMA #597 - BEFORE THE RAIN

The late, great Katrin Cartridge is most recognizable from Mike Leigh’s films, but here she appears in this Macedonian gem alongside Croatian actor Rade Šerbedžija, a character actor who seems to pop up in most every kind of film, but for never quite long enough. This is probably his best role. He won at Venice for this, and it was Macedonia’s first film to be nominated for an Oscar.

The film touches on cycles of life, violence and social upheaval, with a looping narrative, set against a stark Macedonian landscape.
