I tried my hand out at matte painting for the first time today!  I did this practice scene using techniques I developed for Malise and the Machine’s battle backgrounds.  Now that I have some confidence doing large scale scenes like this I’ll likely be using a similar technique for map backgrounds.

Final 3 thumbnails for the Nubrevnan Matte painting project. Now I have to choose one of the 9 and do a full render…it is going to be hard to pick one, I have a few that I really like, we shall see what resources I can get to make the Matte look as cool as posible. Pretty happy with this last 3 ones :D

Number 8 might be an air fight…love me some flying men

Thumbnails I worked on today for a Matte painting piece inspired by The Witchlands series by @stdennard . I am excited and afraid to beggin the Matte itself, it might take me ages… it’s the first time I am trying out this technique, wish me luck

I always imagined Nubrevna’s coast being quite rocky and tricky to navigate, i might have overdone it with the tiny islands/rocks hahaha.

Crazy Magical games

“Harry Potter Magical games and sports” series

  1. The Irish game of Aingingein- each player would take the ball (a goat’s gallbladder) and fly through a series of burning barrels, each set high upon stilts, on a broomstick. The ball would then be thrown into the final barrel. The winner was the player who completed the task in the shortest time without catching on fire.
  2. Triwizard Tournament - alternative ending of the 2nd task.
  3. The Scottish game of Creaothceann- players were equipped with a broomstick and wore a cauldron strapped to their head. At the start of the game a hundred rocks and boulders that had been charmed to float a hundred feet above the ground began falling to the ground. The players then zoomed around the field, trying to catch as many rocks in their cauldrons as possible.

Finally managed to record how I usually (not always!) do natural backgrounds, using some stock photos, photos from royalty free packs and free Clip Studio assets.

This doesn’t count as a tutorial, but it shows the technology well. I dunno why people keep saying that photobashing is an easy way which doesn’t require skill because in reality, it requires perspective drawing skills and lighting understanding, not mentioning the color theory. IMO it definitely is NOT a way to skip the learning part.
It helps a lot when you have a limited time and/or have to do an enormous amount of work for a project, but I do not see a way how to be good at backgrounds skipping the perspective drawing part.

Found once a whole bunch of vids about photobash method, it literally haunted me this few days. This time Johnson Ting was big inspiration. I couldn’t think about anything beside mechanical creatures. Rough thing, but nice one uwu

Material.
