Ancient Roman fresco from Pompeii, Region VI, c.50 AD

A young woman is shown with a pen (stylus) that is used to enscribe writing on the wax tablets she is holding. The net in her hair is made of golden threads and typical for the fashion of the Neronian period.

The yacametztli or Moon nose ring is an element of the regalia of the Pulque Lords. These deities are associated with darkness, humidity and the feminine side of the cosmos. The Moon incarnates the feminine principle, subtlety, fertility and cold, spiritual qualities found in pulque, which is seen as the milk with which the Earth feeds Her children. In the paintings of Pahtecatl, Lord of Medicine, and Ometochtli, Lord of Drunkenness, They both bear a yacametztli, symbolizing Their relation with the qualities of pulque.

The paintings of Pahtecatl and Ometochtli will be on display at my upcoming show at Art Bug Gallery. Click here to see prints of Them!

HUGE DUMP FOUND AT THE BOTTOM OF THE MEDITERRANEAN

Images obtained by an underwater exploration robot at the seafloor of the Strait of Messina in Italy, have revealed the largest concentration of garbage ever recorded in deep waters anywhere in the world.

The photos extracted from ROV video footage show examples of benthic litter accumulations observed within channels in the Messina Strait, including: bricks, tires, clothes and large metallic objects, small  and large mounds, sometimes formed around large items such as a buried car and a sunken boat.

Litter is patchy but pervasive on all surveyed channels, reaching densities up to 200 items in 10 meters of observation. Such impressive amount of litter can be explained by submarine canyons acting as carrier of marine litter from shallow water to the deep sea and a strong urbanization of the coastal area.

I was definitely going for the “I’m a singer from the 70s album cover vibe”. So weird to see I’ve changed styles 100 times within the last 8 years. But this one’s from last year.

The population estimates of the cities of the Roman Empire in 117 AD.

Symbols are proportional to estimated population. After Hanson & Ortman 2017.

Been having fun comparing maps and trying to identify some of the major locations. The big one in Egypt is obviously Alexandria, while the next-biggest is probably Thebes. The large one in Syria I’m sure is Antioch, and the big one in Libya I assume is Leptis Magna.

Visiting Spain for the first time. I’m in the little beach town of Sitges, just 30 minutes outside of Barcelona. I feel in love, great seafood and tapas-best paella I’ve ever tasted, rich history of art and culture, gorgeous beaches, a very welcoming LGBTQ community, and more. I feel incredibly safe here.

Here’s a shot from the stunning Museus de Sitges, with gorgeous views of the ocean and they house several early Picassos also.

Mediterranean on Spring.

I’m on a little break and came to Turkey with friends. Needed some time out from Tokyo. I love traveling and I love fashion, and just because we are traveling on a budget as backpackers doesn’t mean I have to look like one.  You don’t need to sacrifice your looks to be comfortable while traveling. There are ways to do it without bringing your whole wardrobe with you.  I chose chiffon and see-through pieces. They dry easily in case you need to wash them while traveling, they are light and are perfect for this spring weather in the Mediterranean.

Maenads from a Byzantine Hanging with the Heads of a Dynasian Group, 400- 700, @metmuseum

Maenads were the female attendants of the god of wine, Dionysis. They were supposed to have been women who had left their homes and families to roam forests and mountains, singing and dancing. Although there are negative connotations associated with the maenads emphasizing their state of rapture with song and wine, I have alwasy thought of the maenad as a symbol of women’s liberation. They are among my favorite female characters from antiquity. This tapestry, interestingly enough, made during the Byzantine period is a great example of the continuity of the cultural heritage of the pan-Mediterranean culture that spanned many centuries and continents.
