For the last day of MerMay, please enjoy this papercraft commission of mer!Jiang Cheng! What a fun commission :D
Before starting on the piece, I thought I might stick to a single fish as inspiration to make things more realistic. But then I figured WHAT is the point of making a mer-version of my favorite little fictional man if not SELF-INDULGENCE? So then I went whole hog (whole hogfish?): BEAUTIFUL betta fish tailfin! Dorsal fin like an EEL except not really! The blue shimmer-paper scales are BIOLUMINESCENT! His long trailing fins can ELECTROCUTE his prey! His tears turn to PEARLS, which he then uses to ACCESSORIZE!!! It’s a fancy and biologically nonsensical life for mer!Cheng.

Fifth one is Alyra! There isn’t a lot known about her. She seems to suddenly appear in a random enclosure, and once you turn your head she disappears to appear in another. She’s kind of an urban legend in the sanctuary and no one knows where and when she started to appear; some even thinks the sanctuary is haunted by this deathly beautiful fish and that she’s actually the ghost of an unfortunate merperson. Her singing voice is incredibly beautiful, but chilling at the same time, making your mind hesitate between your fight or flight instincts. But the truth is; she’s just chilling, hopping left and right in the enclosures to observe humans; they fascinate her and she wants to know more about them.
Alyra is a sort of “treasure hunter”, a hoarder of man-made objects and seashells (yes she consider our trash, tools and baubles as treasures). She crafts her own jewelry out of bones and materials she finds on the seabed and likes to hang out where humans are nearby, either the local dock or the sanctuary. The conch she wears as necklace is the shell of her dead pet, a hermit crab named Bernard.

Fourth one is Arthas! In his mer story Arthas lived as a lone wolf his entire life, fiercely protecting his territory from other mers and marine creatures, and he was successful for most of his life until he was met with a more sizable adversary; a bigger and meaner merperson, an octopus more precisely. After a gruesome fight where Arthas struggled to defend his home, he lost the battle when the other shred his arm off his body. He was brought to the sanctuary and almost passed away from blood loss but miraculously survived. It’s now been a few years he’s been living in the sanctuary. Workers tried so many times to return him back to the wild but he never budged even if they tried everything to yeet him out of there. He made himself at home in the sanctuary even though he isolates himself from other merfolks (yes he’s still a grumpy hermit that hates people) and doesn’t wanna leave. He basically established himself in his enclosure and went “This is my home now, fuck off”. XDD Workers likes him even though he’s a grumpy man because he’s calm and usually keeps to himself, but he’s still very territorial and fiercely defends his enclosure from other merpeople.

Third one is Mitch! In his mer story, he lost his parents at a young age after a shark attack and grew up alone. He’s a scavenger, loots trash from the seafloor to use as weapons and craft material. (Un)fortunately for him, he was found and nursed by a wealthy man that took care of him just as if he was his own son. However, that protection and affection came with a price; Mitch essentially had to become a poacher and hunt down exotic merfolks to bring back to his “master” for him to display as hunt trophies (aka he wipes his hands clean while Mitch does the dirty work). He lives near the sanctuary and targets any pretty looking merfolks who attracts his attention, and those living in the sanctuary are perfect targets because they’re usually in a weaker state than normal, healthy and wild merpeople.

Life is good for Saar, Solas, and Kubide. They travel around the ocean together. None of them need to worry about the problems of the wider world—until a run-in with a whaling ship leads to a revelation about Solas that turns their world upside down.
i’m still up to my ears in playing stardew valley so have some merfolk au sketches in the meantime, in order
kubide has a lot of hair and it gets in the way when hunting giant squid so braiding time
that one time kubide nearly got pulled into the abyss by a sinking ship (both saar and kubide only have lungs bc they’re whales, so they do need to surface regularly to breathe (solas only has gills, so it’s the opposite situation for him))
is saar the only one willing to ask for directions in this trio? yes. does that mean some poor fishers occasionally get the shock of their life? also yes

i was coming back home from vacations the other day and remembered a merfolk lonelytrinkets au i wrote once & never finished :’) about mikaele surviving a storm and getting lost in the ocean and this weird merguy peeking up from time to time to taunt him as he waits for him to die so he can eat him but then they kinda hit it off bc idk they’re weird (?) (And gay And lonely)
I’m glad to have finished this before the end of May. This is a part 2 of this drawing I made a year or two ago.
To the best of their knowledge, Luke and Leia were some of the last merfolk in their kingdom’s water. As shifters of half-human descent, they could walk among the normal humans they were reared by.
Like their fallen brethren, they still experienced a call to the sea, despite the threat posed by the monster that stalked the shores.
I modified Vader’s helmet a bit to reflect a wolf skull. I was inspired by Zahn’s description, in the Original Thrawn Trilogy, that Vader’s helmet was based on Noghri skull structure. Those books are kind of a mess (affectionate), but filled with filled with a lot of interesting ideas.
I apologize to the people saw my original drawing and suggested a happy ending between Anakin and Padme in the AU. Unfortunately that’s not quite my brand. ^^;
After the fall of the Xianle Kingdom, Feng Xin and Mu Qing had done their best to secure a way out for the Prince.
Fortunately he had Hua Cheng, his bodyguard, to help him escape. His shark attributes made him a formidable protector with a strength that few merpeople could fight against, and an ability to stay constantly awake.
Sharkpeople needed to be always moving in order to keep breathing. That’s why they didn’t need to sleep much, and when they had to, they would enter a trance-like state where their senses were still aware and watchful of any danger.
The run from Xianle was only successful because Hua Cheng could be on the run constantly. And when Xie Lian the merprince needed to sleep, they would tie up each other together so the Prince could sleep safely against his ever-moving protector.
A dolphin’s visit is a rare occasion for the shark. Especially a baby dolphin. They’re highly intelligent, and know what kind of threat the sharkfolk pose… but today is that very rare occasion, and Jotaro couldn’t be happier.
