Hakon, Iconic Skald. Picked this up at my local game store and painted it with only minor waiting time sitting on my hobby table. He was a fun paint! Three pretty solid days of effort went into this Dragonborn, and he was worth every second. Model is Tazythas, Dragonfolk Rogue by @reaperminiatures. I like to find references for the stuff I paint, just to know what the little baubles are and how other people paint them, but there was not a single one out there for this guy. I picked him up as a new release from my local game store a few weeks ago (although I think he’s from Bones IV?) and was really intimidated to begin. He luckily came in a lot of pieces; his head, wings, tail, and arms were all not part of the body, which was great. I can’t imagine painting all his little crevices with the model glued together. He actually came with a bunch of options for his arms, everything from meat to double swords and a tankard. Pretty cool mini! ⠀

I didn’t prime this guy because I’ve had a lot of issues lately with my rattle can primer, and hand priming intimidated me with so many details. It worked out though; the factory prime was good on him and I had no issues. In handling him, I had issues rubbing paint off (there were too many pieces to stick on to something else to hold), so I ended up varnishing him four or so times between details. I tried a new process where a gloss varnish is painted on, which when dry makes shades fall only into recesses and not linger on flat surfaces. It worked, but I don’t know how important that was for something this small. I don’t know that I would do it again unless a specific situation arose where it would be useful. Overall though, an extremely fun mini that I’m proud to show off :) As always, progress pictures at the end. Follow me for more painting adventures!⠀

Drow (Dark) Elf Priestess, the third and final of my Drow trio. I enjoyed these three so much; great sculpts, great poses, fun to paint. This Drow was approached like the other two, with the exception that I received my magnifying lamp in the mail about 75% of the way through this one. Game changer! Timber wolves! This is one of the rare minis I bought to use in my campaigns, and they were fun and quick projects. I got to try out some wet blending on the multicolored wolf, going from tan to orange to grey to black. I wish I had gotten a picture, but it looked a MESS before I went over it all with a wash of Nuln oil, which brought it all together a lot more than I expected. Female Human monk. Man, this was a fail, but in the interest of posterity and improvement I’m posting it anyway. I worked on skin shading, which worked out well until the dreaded enemy…EYES. I lost count how many times I did the eyes for this mini. I was determined to have an iris and a pupil, and it was not in the cards. I’ve gotten really good at thinning my paints, but it didn’t matter for this mini. By the time I was satisfied (enough) with the eyes, the face was so gooped with layers of trial and error all the shading and definition was gone. You live and learn - no more Wizkids humanoids for me for now. Onwards! As usual, progress pictures at the end :)⠀

Drow Elf Elite. This was an extremely rewarding paint job; I worked on shading for the cloak and the skin for probably half the work time on this model. Reaper is so much more enjoyable to paint for humanoid minis in my opinion, at least for beginners. What I originally didn’t like about the style (accentuated eyes, features) is exactly what is great about painting it. The eyes and cheeks welcomed the shading, as well as the cloak. Love the texture! This was also my first finished mini using #milliput on the base. I will get better at working it, ha. As always, progress photos at the end.⠀

Frost Giant Harshnag from #stormkingsthunder was too big for my picture space! Man, this mini just about killed me. This is by far the largest, most detailed mini I’ve worked on, and it shows. He was about a week of work (~14 hours) and was my first attempt at really shading skin the way it deserves to be shaded. Very proud of how he turned out, although I would love to have worked on his leather armor more. Adding that to my list of things to learn. Shoutout to @doctorfaustspaintingclinic and @realmsmithtv for their incredibly useful tutorials. Progress picture at the end - I will try to include these as much as I can going forward :)

Spirit Beast from #reaperminiatures Bones Black. I love the style of this mini, and it ended up being a very simple paint job. Basecoat of a dark green with a heavy, brighter green drybrush and then a light highlight of what looked in the bottle like tennis ball green. Really fun to paint and to assemble! The other half of my Half Orc barbarian duo. Tried out a new style on the eyes, and worked on highlights. I have to admit, when I first got into minis, I loved the Wizkids humanoids. Now that I’m painting them, I really struggle compared to Reaper. The “cartoonish” features of reaper really make the details stand out when painting. Wizkids gets muddy, especially around the eyes and very small details. Maybe that’s just my inexperience?⠀

Goliath Barbarian! This was a study in skin tone shading and inks, trying to create crisp outlines between each color and be unafraid to really go heavy on washes. I think I’ve been really light on them in the past, afraid of getting tide marks, but it worked here. Forgive the #cat hair; I don’t think that’s a problem I can ever fully solve. ⠀
