#missing e

LIVE

Hey Folks,

I want to apologize for the time it has taken (and in advance for how long it might take) to get Missing e back up and running completely for Tumblr users.

You may find yourself needing to temporarily disable Missing eorsome of its features to use certain features of Tumblr. Please know that I’ll be working on tweaking the new Tumblr interface soon!

cutlerish:

I’m busy at work. Things are definitely interesting and I like what I’m doing, but I’m burned out some when I get home a lot of the time.

It may seem like ages ago, but I pretty much just moved to a different country, to one of the biggest, most complex cities in the world. I want to see more of this place. Go skating at Rockefeller Center.

My new apartment isn’t 100% ready yet. The furniture is built and I’m mostly unpacked, but there’s still painting to do and stuff to buy and set up. I don’t even have Internet there until next week.

I am spending several evenings in the next couple weeks doing technical phone interviews for an IT Director position at a family member’s company.

I am going back to Toronto, where I will be meeting with my real estate lawyer and the ex-to-be to finalize the separation agreement and sign all the closing documents for selling the house. On that note, it is also my now-meaningless wedding anniversary in three weeks. I am processing this.

Tumblr’s new interface looks great in some ways and poor in others. I want to hunker down and get Missing e back up and running, but it is slow going.

I apologize that it is taking more time than you or I would like, but perhaps you’ll understand.

Looks like Tumblr has gotten around to making more of the post control buttons (delete, edit, etc) into icons!

This means that Missing e’s feature which created these icons is now making the new ones look wrong.

To fix this, go to the Missing e settings page (here’s how), click on the Dashboard Features tab, and under the section called Dashboard Tweaks, un-check the box next to the line that says “Replace text dashboard controls with icons (delete, edit, queue, publish)”.

In the next version, I’ll be fixing this so that the publish button and others that still don’t have icons will work when you turn that setting back on.

I’m sorry for the delay for the new version, but moving to NYC, starting a new job and getting / furnishing an apartment is pretty time-consuming.

It looks like yesterday’s possible issue with the “Delete Selected” button was not actually a problem.

I didn’t mean to scare Missing e users when I posted the warning, but I am committed to keeping you informed and only adding value to your Tumblr experience.

I believed that, though unconfirmed at the time, the issue was important enough to inform users about before I had a chance to verify it.

For future situations, I’m going to work on some tools on my end to make it easier for me to verify major issues more quickly. That way, I won’t post unconfirmed scary stuff.

Thanks so much for all the feedback you guys have given me on this!

Many users have noticed some garbling of the look of some Missing e features.

I will do my best to get a fix out for this today or tomorrow.

Please excuse the delay as I just moved from Toronto to New York City yesterday afternoon!

Looks like there are some lingering issues with Missing e on non-stable versions of Chrome. Issues include Missing e control icons not showing on posts and the Quick Reblog menu not always showing up.

I will be looking into this problem today.

Missing e version 2.14.0 is now available!

This one has been a long time coming, folks, and I apologize for the delay.

Fixes

All Browsers

  • PreventR shortcut key from opening new reblog page when Quick Reblog is activated

Chrome

  • This version now supports the newest versions of Chrome, which should fix a number of broken features for people using the very latest Chrome browser.
  • Please note that old versions of Chrome (version 17 and below) will no longer run Missing e. You should update Chrome now. Here’s how!

Firefox

  • I’ve fixed the issue that caused users of Firefox 16 and higher to not be able to answer questions.
  • However, there seems to be a problem with the +Upload photobuttonMissing e adds in some new post pages. I’m working on that.

Safari

  • Nothing broke! Yay!

New Feature: Sidebar Tracked Tags

I’ve added an option to show your tracked tags on your dashboard sidebar!

You can find this option under the Sidebar Tweaks feature in the Missing e settings page, under the Dashboard Featurestab.

If you have trouble, clear your browser cacheafteryou update Missing e.

Firefox Users

A recent change to the Firefox tools that are used to create this extension have caused Missing e to be no longer be compatible with Firefox versions below 13. I will look into this to see if I can restore backwards compatibility, but it is worthwhile to keep Firefox up-to-date anyway. You should be able to update Firefox from your browser’s menu.

Recently, I’ve been busy navigating the murky waters of NAFTA work permits for my move from Toronto to New York City.

I apologize that it has been a long time coming, but I will be working on releasing new versions of Missing e this weekend to support the newest versions of Chrome and Firefox.

Please stay tuned!

I just wanted to apologize for the time it is taking to address some of the unfixed bugs in Missing e.

Over the past little while, I’ve been flying to and from New York City for interviews during my job hunt. It has left me a little frazzled.

Today is likely my last interview, so I will be able to put some more focus on Missing e starting this evening.

Again, I apologize and I will keep you updated on bug fixes and new versions on this blog.

There are still a couple things I will be working on in the next day or two.

First, Tumblr has added a R keyboard shortcut to open the manual reblog page, and Alt+R keyboard shortcut to use their fast reblog feature. This is the reason why pressing R to Quick Reblog is also opening up the manual reblog page. I will fix this.

Second, I’m going to try to get tracked tags (with counts) to show up in your sidebar, in addition to in the tag search box at the top of the page.

Stay Tuned!

Just to let you know, I will be travelling over the weekend. However, once I’m in one place for a little while, I’m going to be working on the following fixes and features for Missing e:

  • Display tracked tags in the sidebar, in addition to the new tag search box
  • Fix for the tag reblogging when clicking the reblog button
  • Fix a problem with Quick Reblog not showing drop-down for secondary blogs on tag search results page

I made a change to Missing e a couple hours ago that broke Quick Reblog for some users.

The problem is now fixed, so if you are having trouble, simply update to the newest version: http://missing-e.com/update

I apologize for any inconvenience!

The Firefox version of the extension is not available at the moment. I have some work to do this evening to correct some issues found by the Mozilla Add Ons site where Missing e is hosted.

I will resolve the issue as soon as possible and keep you updated on when it is available!

Over this weekend, as I find more issues with Missing e on the new Tumblr dashboard layout, I will continue to update Missing e. However, I most likely won’t announce new versions unless they fix something major.

You can check to see if your Missing e is up-to-date, by visiting the update page. If a new version is available, you’ll be able to download it there. If you are up-to-date, the page will tell you so!

For example, I just released Missing e 2.13.1 which fixes the magnifier for avatars in dashboard notifications (they no longer open new tabs) and the extra blog drop-down menu when you open the manual reblog page when reblogging your own posts.

If your Missing e is up-to-date and you notice a problem that hasn’t been fixed yet, please let me know!

Missing e is free for anyone to use. I love the community here on Tumblr and it makes me happy to make your experience better.

I do my best to keep Missing e up-to-date, fresh and exciting. Dealing with some issues that have come up have not been easy, either. However, I’m only one guy. One pretty nifty guy, but one guy nonetheless. You are most welcome to lend your support; I am always happy to hear suggestions and even happier to receive donations.

You may ask what donations are used for?

The answer is three-fold:

  1. Missing e’swebsite hosting costs
  2. Encouraging my friends to believe that Missing e is work worth doing
  3. Keeping me rich in candy and hot chocolate

On a serious note, I spend no small amount of my free time developing Missing e. If you aren’t able to donate, I’m always very pleased to get feedback, suggestions and kind words from you guys.

In the last hour, Tumblr pushed out a new dashboard layout.

Some improvements include restoring a (partial) Tumblr blog sidebar element to the main dashboard.

I will be working this weekend to apply style fixes for Missing e and look into any possible improvements.

Please note that I am already hard at work on these issues:

  • TheQuick Reblog drop-down menu doesn’t show a selection menu for side blogs
  • You may not be able to reblog yourself to the same blog as the original post
  • Mass Delete buttons don’t show up correctly in the Inbox

If you notice any additional functional issues (a broken Missing e feature), please let me know here.

If you’ve installed Missing e for Safari on an Apple computer, there is a small chance you may find that the extension won’t actually run. This is often a problem with the Safari browser, but can sometimes be fixed without too much difficulty.

If you see this e. button in your browser toolbar, you’ll know Missing e is installed.

However, if you don’t see this e. button beside the logout button on your Tumblr dashboard, Missing e isn’t actually running properly.

For some (but not all) users, this can be fixed with one of these simple steps. After trying each one, remember to reload your dashboard to see if the missing e. shows up. When it does, you are done!

Update Safari

If your Safari browser is not up-to-date, getting the newest version can sometimes fix this problem. To do so on an Apple computer, simply open the Apple menu at the top left of your screen and open Software Update. Follow the instructions to apply any updates available for Safari.

Disable and Re-Enable Missing e

Maybe updating Safari didn’t help, maybe yours is up-to-date. The next step is to disable and re-enable Missing e. Follow these instructions in the FAQ, and make sure to follow the optional step of restarting Safari.

Disable and Re-Enable Extensions

Okay, still not working? Sorry about that! Try this:

  • Open the Safari Preferences window (click the Safari menu in the menubar and click on Preferences)
  • Click on the Extensions tab in the Safari Preferences window
  • Click the big ON/OFF switch to turn it to the OFF position
  • Restart Safari
  • After getting back to the Extensions tab, click the big ON/OFF switch to turn it back to the ON position

Reinstall Missing e

No luck yet? The next thing to try is to uninstall and reinstall Missing e. It is best to save your settings, because uninstalling Missing e will reset them to the defaults.

Now for the tougher bit!

If none of these solutions has worked for you, the problem may be with some internal Safari settings. Follow these steps to see if this applies to you.

  • Quit Safari.
  • Open the Terminal app and paste this command into it and hit return:

defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeInternalDebugMenu 1

  • Start Safari. A new Debug item will appear in the menubar.

  • In the Debug menu, if the item “Use Multi-process Windows” is not checked, turn it on.
  • You can now disable the Debug menu by opening the Terminal app and pasting this command in it and hitting return:

defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeInternalDebugMenu 0

  • Restart Safari.

Nothing has worked?

If none of these solutions solves your problem, the issue with your browser may be more serious. I suggest consulting Safari support on Apple’s website.

A couple of issues have been brought up by Missing e users. I will be looking into them this weekend.

The first is that the “open ask boxes on the dash” and avatar magnifier features appear to be opening an extra tab in some browsers.

The other is a malfunctioning Quick (1-Click) Reblog feature, though I believe this may be limited to Firefox 15.

Please stay tuned for updates!

Sorry for the small hiccup there, but Missing e is again available for Firefox again!

If you want the new version now, you can update here:missing-e.com/update

Please Note:

A recent change to the Firefox tools that are used to create this extension have caused Missing e to be no longer be compatible with Firefox versions below 13. I will look into this to see if I can restore backwards compatibility, but it is worthwhile to keep Firefox up-to-date anyway. You should be able to update Firefox from your browser’s menu.

A handful of people have mentioned seeing ads injected into the Tumblr dashboard (not put there by Tumblr, itself).

Let me assure you that Missing edoes not place any ads on any site whatsoever. I firmly believe that doing so without user permission is dishonest and inappropriate.

If you are seeing ad banners and the like on Tumblr, try disabling other extensions and add-ons you have installed in case any of those are causing it.

You should also make sure to download Missing e and its updates from official sources: missing-e.com, the Chrome Web Store or the Firefox Add-Ons site.

Note that the Missing e blog page and website do have banner ads to help support development.

Looks like a recent change to the Tumblr interface has caused the Magnifier feature not to work for photo posts.

I am currently looking into this problem!

hlep

why can’t I choose which on which blog to reblog in the missing e hover thingy anymore?

is this because of the tumblr update?

is it just me or?
