Reblogging again. Firefox is an excellent, safe and fast browser and everyone should consider using it.

Don’t just consider it. If you have the ability to switch to Firefox, this is your official notice to do it.

Stop everything you’re doing and go download and install Firefox.

If you’re saying, “well, I need Chrome because I need such-and-such extension for my job”, the computer will not explode if you install another browser. Use Chrome ONLY for work tasks and use Firefox for everything else. If you’re concerned about losing your bookmarks, Firefox can import your Chrome bookmarks.

[ID: Firefox Library window. The “Import and Backup” panel is expanded, displaying the option, “Import Data from Another Browser”, which is also circled with a red MS Paint ellipse. ID end.]

And, don’t forget to install uBlock Origin while you’re at it.

Forgot a thing. Subscribe to Mozilla VPN for bonus points. It’s basically the only truly secure VPN service in the world right now.

For $5 a month, you can completely conceal your online activities from your ISP in a manner that isn’t just immediately monetised or turned over to the cops. No, it’s not free, it does cost money, but the money doesn’t go to line a billionaire’s pockets.

I wonder how much of this is because of work/school from home forcing people to use Chrome so all their stupid monitoring softwares and platforms can work.

This is also your reminder that you don’t have to use just one browser. You can use chrome for all the monitoring bullshit your office wants you to run and use firefox for everything else.

Be sure to add the multi account containers extension to your firefox, which allows you to be logged in to multiple accounts on the same website at the same time in the same window but in different tabs.

look on my five open tumblr accounts (not sideblogs, accounts!) ye mighty and despair.

Firefox is super good, folks. It’s good in a general “google shouldn’t own everything in the entire fucking world” sense AND in a “this is an actual good product that does lots of cool shit” sense.

ALSO make sure to add the Ublock origin extension on Firefox - I haven’t seen a youtube ad in five years and you don’t have to either.

While you’re at it, why not add the Wayback Machine extension so that if you go looking for a page that has been taken down the wayback machine will automatically offer you an archived version instead; also handy for documenting people’s shitty takes and winning arguments after they delete the original post!

Worried that Firefox is going to slow down your computer? In benchmarks, modern versions of chrome and firefox are pretty much the same speed but you can still install the auto tab discard extension ANYWAY so that it will snooze unused tabs in order to keep your computer running faster. Set it to sleep, discard, close, and store tags at your discretion!

And while you’re at it: install Firefox as your mobile browser for android and add those extensions to your mobile browser! Mobile adblock is here, baybee, save your data and enjoy a better mobile experience! And install it on iOS! iOS can’t add extensions, but at least it’s better than safari, and if you want a somewhat more private iOS browsing experience try firefox focus for iOS (which is also available on android but you can accomplish the same thing with extensions).

Anyway, firefox is good.

Heres your reminder to use literally anything but chrome

And here’s your reminder that Firefox actively works to protect your privacy and prevent tracking.

Firefox also has “Facebook fence” which is used to contain Facebook into isolated tabs that prevent tracking as you browse, since so many sites have social media plugins/ads that help collect data for Facebook and other apps.

You can tell Firefox to fence in Facebook in the browser preferences. Also a good time to change your search engine to DuckDuckGo and leave Google search behind (or only use it with another browser that’s separate from daily use).

The EFF (OP of the tweet) has various types of privacy tools that they’ve created. Some are browser plugins. I recommend going to their site to learn more about internet privacy and advocacy (and donating a few bucks if you can spare it). https://www.eff.org/pages/tools

The Chrome browser exists to show you ads and track where you go so that Google can show you more ads. Please stop using Chrome. Firefox is open source, and while Mozilla is not perfect, it isn’t actively fucking evil the way Google is. It has a bazillion plugins, including various (FREE!) ad block plugins (I recommend uBlock Origins, which will even block YouTube ads – you can watch videos without interruptions again!). It will also function very effectively with a lot more tabs open than Chrome. I’ve got around 800 tabs open right now (not loaded, of course, except for maybe 2 dozen; it’s been a heavy browsing day), and my wife has between 2k and 3k at any time.

We are in the New Browser Wars. This time there’s a helluva lot of money up for grabs, because a lot of it is about running those ads. Monopolies are bad for consumers.

Just go download Firefox.

Firefox plugins I 100% recommend if you don’t want to be tracked (and want to cost corporations money)

AdNauseam is an adblocker that generates false clicks on the ads it blocks, which costs the corporations that pay for them money.

Privacy Possum messes with the tracking data collected about you, rendering it essentially useless

TrackMeNot generates random search terms across sites, meaning that any data collected about things you actually search is buried in a sea of random bullshit. Makes it very hard for people to figure out what you’re actually doing. You can block terms in the options, which means it won’t search for anything incriminating on your behalf (I think the word bomb is blocked by default)

WhatCampaign replaces tracking analytics used in website code with data that can’t be used to track you. I’m pretty sure it replaces it with “fuck off” by default.

I’m not adding links because tumblr will not show this up if I do, but you can search these on the Firefox addons site and they’ll come up.

posting not only as a critique of the profit motive under capitalism but also because I fucking hate youtube premium

Just gonna link the Firefox addon that fixes this, also the one that removes ads in general, which also previously weren’t a part of YouTube!

Both work on mobile Firefox, as well.

So download Firefox.

The adblocker recommended here also has an “element picker” which allows you to pick pieces of a website you don’t want to see and just zap them out of existence–like cookie notifications, distracting sidebars, and all sorts of other bullshit modern websites pile on to drive User Engagement™. Some websites are a bit crafty about how they display these things to you, requiring further steps to be taken if you want to make the change permanent. But holy hell, it makes the modern internet more bearable.

about 60% of web browser users are using chrome as of 2020, as opposed to only 4.5% firefox

As of 2020, 2 years ago

March 2022: chrome 64.9%, firefox 4.1%

This is your daily reminder to download Firefox on your desktop AND on mobile. You can import all your bookmarks from Chrome very easily. For mobile browser on Android you can install extensions like AdBlock and they also have a YouTube extension that lets you watch picture-in-picture without the YouTube app and listen to videos with your phone screen turned off.

Firefox is great here’s a link for the desktop version. Their website also has a link directly to the app store for the mobile browser. Have fun y'all

My first reblog isn’t showing up in the notes I guess bc I included a link to their website but please download Firefox

The Firefox version of the extension is not available at the moment. I have some work to do this evening to correct some issues found by the Mozilla Add Ons site where Missing e is hosted.

I will resolve the issue as soon as possible and keep you updated on when it is available!

Sorry for the small hiccup there, but Missing e is again available for Firefox again!

If you want the new version now, you can update here:missing-e.com/update

Please Note:

A recent change to the Firefox tools that are used to create this extension have caused Missing e to be no longer be compatible with Firefox versions below 13. I will look into this to see if I can restore backwards compatibility, but it is worthwhile to keep Firefox up-to-date anyway. You should be able to update Firefox from your browser’s menu.

lmao at mozilla having to be like “not only did we not get rid of the fox in our logo but if all the people yelling at us actually use our browser they should have known that ”

this one’s real though

lol, i’d been wondering if i’d missed an update or something.

ANYWAY i fucking love how that firefox article discusses memes as a part of the misinformation news cycle. Good. Correct.

Also please install firefox please, i’m begging you. The reason all of your school sites and work sites and whatever can insist on only working in chrome browsers is because there’s no diversity in the browser market and you should be using firefox because it is GOOD and on almost every computer it’s going to be as fast or faster than chrome (nearly TEN YEARS AGO there was an issue with firefox being somewhat slower but that isn’t the case anymore) and the extensions are wonderful and it now has native tracker blocking and you can import all your bookmarks and

!!!!!!! There is an extension called Auto Tab Discard that sleeps tabs you haven’t looked at in a set amount of time to save your computer’s resources!!!!!

And also firefox is free and open source and it is not a giant advertising engine, like, i posted the other day about the sponsored sites thing but you can turn that off with two clicks, how much fucking effort does it take to get chrome to stop pushing fucking google products at you fuck chrome FIREFOX IS SO FUCKING GOOD PLEASE USE IT AND HELP TO BREAK GOOGLE’S NEAR MONOPOLY ON THE BROWSER MARKET

Also you can install firefox mobile on your phone and put ublock origin on it and you can block browser ads in your phone like I have no idea why everyone isn’t already doing that I haven’t seen a browser ad in fucking YEARS (you can watch youtube in your browser ad free. Why are you still looking at ads? I’m so confused)

In Conclusion Please Use Firefox.

1 - to all of the people sharing desktop computers with parents and spouses and siblings I feel you. HOWEVER! Just because your mom is using chrome doesn’t mean you have to! Your computer is almost certainly capable of running two browsers at once and if that’s slowing it down you can set firefox so that it automatically reloads all your windows and tabs after you close it

2 - Seriously just run multiple browsers if you need chrome for school or whatever then use chrome for school only and don’t give google a second more of your day than you can absolutely help.

3 - I forgot to mention how amazing multi account containers are. Basically firefox lets you create account containers like “work” and “shopping” and “personal” so I’ve got my work’s amazon account open in one tab so that the behavior and cookies from that account don’t follow me all over the internet. I’ve got three different tumblr accounts logged in right now. Read all my free articles for [insert publication i’m certainly not going to pay for *cough* the atlantic *cough*] this month? Open in new container tab. Going on Facebook (disgusting) only in facebook container.

Also here are the basic extensions I use:

  • Ublock Origin - i like it better than adblock because it doesn’t whitelist ads
  • Mind the time - always good to know i’ve spent four hours and forty seven minutes on tumblr and should really log off
  • Multi Account Containers - See above
  • Facebook container - Put facebook and facebook products in facebook jail
  • Decentraleyes - keeps you from being tracked by content delivery networks (fuck google)
  • Privacy Badger - prevents tracking (fuck google)
  • Auto tab discard - sleeps tabs that aren’t in use; can be set to discard tabs after a certain period, saves computer resources
  • HTTPS Everywhere - ensures secure connections
  • Bitwarden - just a really fucking good open source password manager and the extension is great in firefox.

Firefox being fast/secure/supporting new web standards isn’t enough. we need to make extremely useful websites that don’t work on chrome.

No, this won’t work. If they don’t work on chrome, chrome users won’t find out that they’re useful.

You have to make an extremely useful website that works on chrome but then have it stop working and instead display a message saying “It looks like you’re trying to use a bad/insecure/non-standard web browser - try switching to firefox” with a download link where the really useful content used to be

Firefox is SO important. And if it doesn’t fill 100% of your needs? Don’t use it 100% of the time. Firefox is my main browser. I also have Chrome, and use it sparingly, as needed.

This is also useful if you’re not ready yet to fully switch over. Download Firefox. Toy around with it. Put the icon right next to Chrome. Switch up which browser you open. Wean yourself off Chrome.

Whatever percent of the time you DON’T use Chrome, that is a percentage of your data Google DOESN’T GET TO EXPLOIT.

I’m trying to make the switch to Firefox, but oh my godthelag. Like. Actual software lag. Can it PLEASE just. not freeze?

chrome does suck ethically and just functionally but I still thrilled at watching internet explorer get demolished in this. Let’s make sure someone can someday make the same video but with Google caving in.

Internet Exploder use decreased massively because it sucked. It got that nickname for a reason. It was hackable, it was exploitative, and Firefox was the perfect replacement.

I just do not get why all those Firefox users then switched to Chrome. There was never a reason to stop using Firefox. It still has the best of all possible worlds, but somehow apathy made everyone who’s using google for their email switch to the google browser too. It boggles me.

april:

so funny how for a brief time we managed to get perfect alignment for extensions between browsers, webextensions from chrome to firefox to safari, and then google decided “nope, we’re going to enforce some new rules now, time to choose us as your only platform or put in extra work” and now you can’t even publish the same extension on every chromium fork.
