For the third Month of Fear prompt, “paralyzed.” Thought of those moments when my mind was just empty with no desires nor willpower to do the stuff I had to do, and basically all I could do was lie flat in bed maybe scrolling mindlessly through the internet. It feels like a white void physically pressing you down.

Ghosts
Inspired by Ladytron’s “Ghosts”. The phrase “ There’s a ghost in me/Who wants to say I’m sorry/Doesn’t mean I’m sorry” gave me an idea to draw two conflicting emotional states merging as one entity.
This one also has an experimental layer of metallic paint. I bought this fun paint for my infant daughter’s art project and I discovered it can create an interesting effect when it’s applied thinly. Sort of, ghostly simmer that appears only in reflective light.

Title: I can never die
Inspired by: Dragula—Lissie
When I originally set out to plan for this very special Month of Fear, I was fully expecting myself to dig deep into song meanings and lyrics, analyzing each line as if I was doing my English homework. However, it struck me that what is special about music is the way it makes me feel, the way some phrases resonate where others do not and the imagery that comes up simply by listening. To me songs can have deep meaning that is completely different from whatever the creator intended. So while the original Dragula is about a car, I think (I had to ask a search engine of my choice), Lissie’s cover of the song reminded me of the feeling of bursting at the seams, of being clogged with too much energy and feeling for one body to hold. I always think of it as destructive. Of the scene in a movie where power explodes from the hero or villain, setting streets on fire and blowing up cars. I was wondering, though—does it have to be? Could it be creative instead? (That’s the flowers. Please appreciate the deep meaning behind this demoness.)

Seven Devils Reiko Murakami Inspired by the song “Seven Devils” in the playlist. My inner goth couldn’t resist the urge to do some epic creepy lady creature drawing. The seven sets of wings and “eyes” on the figure indicate the devils she contains inside her (though the seventh set of wings might hard to read). The eyes on the wings came from the painting I did long time ago called “Our Void”. After almost 10 years I wanted to revisit the composition and create something new.
I’ll come back with more work later!

Title: “Please forgive me, I’ve got demons in my head”

This song is one of my favorites from the Month of Fear’s playlist. It’s so awkward but the theme is extremely familiar! Our minds are powerful things, sometimes they give us genius ideas but they also can create dangerous thoughts that at least, to me, they make me feel like I have intruders in my own mind. These awful, crazy things that they even use the sound of my voice to convince me I’m dumb, I’m awful, that I will never taste success, that I’m being judged all the time. They laugh at me and make me feel just damn bad.
But we gotta keep smiling right? Living, existing out there in society. That’s what feels scary to me. The awkwardness of keeping those demons at bay while we try to look like functional human beings.

Maybe with neon spelling out their name while they perform for Rodney Dangerfield and Robert Downey Jr. in 'Back to School’? Or maybe Lucifer himself - Danny Elfman - composing film scores and singing in Henry Selick’s ‘The Nightmare before Christmas’? Maybe you remember them… maybe you don’t. But one thing is certain - no one (no one no one no one no one) lives forever*.

Nine Lives
This week’s piece is from “Pet Sematary”. Originally I was going to use the frame for a different piece, but I didn’t like how it looked together when I tested it and decided to make a new piece for the frame instead. The background of this piece is rendered darker than my usual scale for this reason, to match the contrast of the frame. “I don’t want to be buried in a pet cemetery/I don’t want to live my life again” was a catchy phrase; I wanted to make art about it. They say cats have nine lives, and I have the sparkly acrylic to have fun with, so here we go. 9 simmering metallic paint eyed cat.

Haunted by Julia Griffin
Poe’s “Haunted” paints a picture of someone struggling with the shadows of their past. I chose to depict that past as a huge, mysterious figure, looking down on the woman below her with unknown emotion and intent. The past looms so large that it is impossible to avoid.

23. Love Song for a Vampire

The year was 1983 and Annie Lennox came to me in a vision. I was shaken. And stirred. Since then, many of my sweet dreams have come true, and I’ve travelled the world (and the seven seas). I’ve come out the other side much changed and everything looks different from where I stand today. Well… almosteverything.
Miss Lennox remains perfect. Young, pale, and smashing in her crisp suit and perfect tie, riding crop in hand. She remains unchanging and unchangeable - bewitching and beguiling. I know that pictures lie, and I know that the camera doesn’t really steal one’s soul, but that vision remains as powerful - more powerful - than ever.
So let us raise our rose-tinted glasses to the ageless Miss Lennox. Here’s blood in your eye!

Undead! Undead! Undead!
This one is for Bauhaus’ "Bela Lugosi’s Dead". I immediately fell in love with this song when I listened to it the first time on the playlist. This song felt right up in my alley and I just needed to make some art with it. There are few technical things I wanted to experiment in this piece (nice thing about MOF, I can take risks comfortably in projects like this). The coffin shape composition made by masking is one of them. I wasn’t sure if the usual tracing paper technique holds or not, but the layering seemed to survive just fine. Oh, and around his face is the gold tinted acrylic I tried on last week’s piece. He radiates as you walk by it.

“Bad Moon Rising”
This painting is inspired by “Bad Moon Rising” (Thea Gilmore) on our MoF playlist. When I think of it I remember that climate change is happening, and we’re killing our own future and the future of everything around us. I didn’t use many colors because I feel it shows the idea much better, It’s a 5in x 7in oil painting on illustration board.
