Drawing is a lot like exercising in the sense that if you don’t do it regularly it’s eas

Drawing is a lot like exercising in the sense that if you don’t do it regularly it’s easy to feel stiff and unsure of yourself. After the chaos of this summer I’m pretty out of shape. Now that it’s time to dive head first into grad school I’m trying to flex these muscles and just make things without letting the pressure to perform overwhelm me. Getting anything on the page feels kind of like a victory so today I’ll run with that.

The woman in Repose is Sargent’s niece, Rose-Marie Ormond. In keeping with his newfound preference for informal figure studies, Sargent did not create a traditional portrait; rather, he depicted Rose-Marie as a languid, anonymous figure absorbed in poetic reverie. The reclining woman, casually posed in an atmosphere of elegiac calm and consummate luxury, seems the epitome of nonchalance, the painting’s original title. Read more
