“Inflation” was a short chapter at 13 pages, and there’s another official chapter coming in 5 days (a Friday release). But damn, when the art is this good, does it matter if the chapter is short???
Soooo….howdo you solve a problem like Midoriya? Apparently you shout his name a lot, then tell him he’s on his own because Shigaraki’s just one blink away from decaying UA. (I like that the heroes who knew him as a student call him Midoriya, not OFA or Deku.)
I love Horikoshi reminding us that Monoma continues to be a rock star, plus the little notes saying THIS IS MONOMA. (I guess Hori thought we wouldn’t recognize him without his bangs? Hmm, perhaps there will be a chapter extra page on this when the volume comes out!)
This chapter was also brought to you by the word “whoa.” Bakugo’s left gauntlet shatters from Shigaraki’s hands (whoa!), Aizawa realizes Midoriya needs a warp but they can’t do it (WHOAA!), and Midoriya has Toga come flying at him (WHOA!) It’s an oddly cute way to tie together these characters realizing that they’re in over their heads.
I’ll skip talking about the singularity here bc I have another post planned on that (I meant to finish it Friday but it didn’t happen!). All I’ll say is that the heroes continually underestimate Shigaraki’s non-quirk strength…. [Insert “I can’t believe it’s not quirks!” snark here.]
However! I will say it’s odd that Shigaraki’s face is changing and his eyes are disappearing and reappearing rapidly. Compare feral war Shig, when AFO just starts to exert control, to this chapter.
Since AFO’s face is covered by his mask right now, and we know he used to have white hair and red eyes, I wonder if his mask will eventually come off and we’ll see he has the same face as “perfected” Shigaraki. As Shigaraki and AFO have merged, it’s getting much harder to tell “who” is speaking, because it’s both. For example, yelling about heroes “sweeping things under the rug” and “couldn’t possibly comprehend” sounds very Shigaraki. But lecturing heroes on the singularity and how he’s so much smarter than the heroes? That’s AFO.
Ok, it’s TOGA TIME Y’ALL! I quite enjoy Horikoshi putting his twist on romance tropes. Red string of fate? Check. Confessing at the end of the world? Check. Toga goes all out to yank Izuku to her so she can confess her love and, hopefully, save his life. See, Toga doesn’t want Izuku to go to UA because she fears the destruction that awaits. Shigaraki promised her that he wouldn’t destroy what she loves, but the Shigaraki she knew is gone. And AFO wants Izuku even more than she does. If she really does love Izuku — and in her own way, she does — then she can’t let him go because she might not see him again.
I know people are upset that Danger Sense is used in this chapter as a shortcut for the “hard work” of getting to know Toga, or truly building an understanding with villains. But, to be honest, it doesn’t bother me. (There’s no right or wrong here, I’m just making my bias clear.) I personally don’t mind handwaving inconsistencies in quirk powers because powers always serve the story’s needs; e.g., we all know we’re gonna get “awakenings” and new moves during important battles. Though perhaps Danger Sense itself is a misunderstood and poorly named power. Wouldn’t be the first time a quirk wasn’t aptly named or known by its wielder.
Anyway. A few chapters back, Horikoshi introduced the idea that both Ochako and Izuku (and Shoto!) view the villains as humans. While that’s a big first step, it turns out to be … not very useful in actually making change happen. Humans are complex creatures motivated by many different things. Ochako recognized that what’s obvious to her isn’t obvious to Toga, but can’t put her finger on what IS obvious to Toga. Once that breakthrough happens, they can start to relate. Toga has said outright that she loves Izuku and Ochako, but Ochako couldn’t believe that because Toga’s always trying to stab them. Now, between Danger Sense and Ochako’s observations, I think both Izuku and Ochako are grasping how Toga sees the world.
…..Okay, before we go on….this final sentence isn’t 100% true. Toga will carve someone up out of love, yes, but she will also kill in self-defense, to avoid getting caught by authorities, and out of rage/revenge in extreme circumstances. Sometimes she kills when she needs someone’s blood to transform (the woman during Toya’s war fight with Ochako) and sometimes she doesn’t (Camie, Rock Lock, Aizawa).
Where does Toga’s confession leave us??? Well, I’m really glad we get a new chapter early, and it’s pretty much guaranteed to continue the Toga storyline since Ochako and Izuku are on the magazine cover. But, speaking of things that are not obvious… I have NO idea how Horikoshi will handle this. I hope Izuku and Ochako can gently talk Toga down (while battling Moonfish and the Nomu, hehe). If Toga truly loves them, and if she truly wants them to live a good, long life with her, then she can’t keep trying to stab them. But maybe Izuku and Ochako can voluntarily give Toga a vial of blood and show her it’s not the love or the blood that’s the problem; it’s really the random stabbing.
Like many other fans, I do hope this doesn’t turn into Toga and Ochako fighting over Izuku’s love, or immediately turning into a romance for Izuku and Ochako. I also don’t want Izuku and his powers to overshadow what Ochako can do. In fact, if IzuOcha will be canon, I’d like this to be a chance for Izuku to see Ochako help Toga. Like he understands what’s happening because of his Danger Sense insight, but he’s not equipped to help Toga the way Ochako is, so she takes the lead. Seeing Ochako be a hero, and save a villain in a way he hasn’t yet been able to, would be a good way for Ochako to inspire Izuku. And if Izuku decides he needs to be a bit more like Ochako as he approaches Shigaraki, then there’s something meaningful connecting the two (plus, thematically, it ties back to inspiration vs imitation). That said, I don’t think BnHA needs any endgame romantic pairs for the story to be complete, and I’d rather there be no romantic pairs than some last minute shoehorned pairings. But I’m still along for the ride no matter what because dammit I love these characters.
Good morning/afternoon/evening my lovelies! This post is inspired by literally my fucking life lmao. I wrote this while I was going through a breakup and it was a big comfort so I thought some of you guys could use it too <3
Bakusquad
Denki literally refuses to let you stay alone in your room for longer than 5 minutes cos he doesn’t wanna give you time to cry over someone not worth the tears (period. you’re better than that). He forces you to sit in the common room with him and plays all your favourite movies to keep you there.
Kirishima has had whole ass study sessions with the girls, preparing for this moment. He kicks open your door and in complete seriousness says “Makeover time.” You spend the rest of the night wearing face masks, painting each others nails and wearing oversized shirts.
Mina sets up a whole damn powerpoint presentation as to how better off you are without them. There are pictures, graphs, the whole kit and caboodle. For dramatic flare, she wears a suit and sunglasses the whole time.
Sero finally unleashes the roasts about you ex that he had been keeping in for the duration of your relationship. Like he whips out a notebook and everything. Oddly enough it makes you feel better and his entire objective is to make you laugh or smile at least once. He also threatens to tie them up with tape and hang them upside down from the ceiling.
Bakugou at first doesn’t know what to do, and then he gets an idea that’s actually pretty good. He takes you to one of the training grounds where he hands you his extremely loaded gauntlets and lets you blow shit up to get your emotions out.
Dekusquad
Todoroki also doesn’t quite know what to do. He actually ends up bringing you all of HIS favourite foods because he doesn’t really know what you like. However, you find it very sweet and share it with him. He also tells you in complete honesty what he thought of your ex and tells you that you deserved better.
Ochako lets you have just a full blown therapy session. She brings blankets, ice cream, tissues, all of it. She simply sits and listens to your frustrations and pain that you had been bottling up for so long. She doesn’t speak unless she is needed to and by the end, you truly feel a weight lift off your shoulders.
Iida knows exactly what he has to do. One day, just a random day, he walks out to you while you’re in the common room. People all around yet he pays no mind as he DANCES FOR YOU because Mina taught him one and he thought it would make you happy.
Midoriya shows you his notebook. He walks into your room, clutching it very intensely and shows you the pages he wrote about you. He specifically points out all of your strengths and reminds you that your pain is temporary. Essentially, he reminds you that you’re a badass.
Tsuyu shows you cool rocks she found in a pond! You’re not exactly sure why she does but either way it calms you down. She even lets you keep the one that you think is the prettiest. Every now and then you see the rock on your window sill and it makes you smile.
Others
Mineta simply ceases to exist babe. Why? Because I said so. I’m just built different ig. Also all the boys keep him faaaaaar away. Sero tapes him to the ceiling in a lil cocoon.
Aoyama gives you a whole glam-sesh. New clothes, new shoes, new everything. By the end, you sparkle from head to toe but he successfully gets your mind off of what was hurting you.
Hagakure follows the same sort of path and takes you shopping! Just for a few hours you go out and walk around. She wants to do it so you can get some fresh air as well as some new things to make you feel better.
Momo makes you this really really nice tea that she only every really takes for herself. She is also surprisingly really good at giving you advice and reassuring you that this is definitely for the best and you are way better off.
Tokoyami invites you into his room and lets you play with Dark Shadow and also shows you some of the music he likes! He isn’t so great with comforting words so he figured he would show you ways in which he cares.
Sato literally just continuously bakes for you. Cookies, cupcakes, cakes, the whole shebang! Because who can be sad while eating sweets? He also tries to make your favourite dessert.
Koda takes you outside and gets you to sit down against a tree. Once he sits beside you, the little creatures in the nature come out and hang out with the two of you. A bird even sits on your shoulder!
Shoji gives you piggybacks all day. It sounds odd but he’s really strong and carries you around to make you smile. He also is a big help in keeping Mineta the hell away from you.
Ojiro, precious boy, has a training session with you to let out your frustrations. He also urges you to talk about what’s bothering you all the while you’re trying to punch him. You end up beating him to which he then reminds you that you’re strong and they can’t take that away.

SO, brain said todoroki working the night shift at a cvs during the summer or something and I think this has already been done, actually (but i don’t remember it so i’m not plagiarizing).
But the absolute chaos that could string from this whole thing. He’s probably a cashier.
First off, he would be so done with this thing.
Like the weirdos who come into gas stations at 3 am are the people he has to deal with
So we have one sleep deprived todo and like 30 sketchy customers with issues
“no ma’am, the coupon isn’t valid. in fact it’s been expired since 2008″
“no sir, i can only scan one coupon per purchase, per customer”
He probably has so many of those interactions that he does, in fact, take multiple coupons at once and expired extra bucks.
Although, when its much to late for our icyhot boy, he probably messes with people on purpose just because he’s bored and too delusional to act like a sane person.
*scans card* “it won’t go through” “oh well try again” “*scans card and it goes through* it won’t go through”
*scanning a pill bottle* “you know, I heard the yakuza was using this as a front for their quirk enhancers, didn’t end well though. Turned people into giant mosquitoes. You should have seen it. Couldn’t eave my house for a month.”

Todo: i heard there was a lawsuit against them. something about smuggling drugs through that exact flavor. Hid it in the caramel chunks.”

Todoroki is the kind of guy to probably actively flirt with the manager or boss or something to get on their good side or just to get a 50 cent raise
Upgrade: he cannot flirt that well. it’s probably confusing with mixed in Spanish words (?) but the manager finds his efforts cute and somehow flattering.
He definetly bumps into a poorly disguised dabi at some point at 4 am buying cheap hair dye
Todoroki: *eye contact*

At first its kind of awkward (especially because todo got so tired of the noise he came at her with a broom and lysol; it did not end well) so they just kind of acknowledge the fact that they know each by staring at each other for minutes at a time, even when he’s checking someone out
They finally decide to talk to each other and its only chaos from there.
They race each other in baskets through the isles and replace labels on shampoo bottles
They probably sniff the perfume behind the counter and rate the smells (once todoroki stole a sample), doing bad french accents and huffing them like they were wine (that didn’t end well though because they both needed sinus medicine afterwards)
Todoroki, doing a bad french accent: ah yes, stronk, woodsy, cheap…
Uraraka: mm-hm, airy and floral, just like the fabreeze I keep in my room
Todo: this one is, yes, yes… balsomic… vinegar that is. what is this?
Uraraka: mm, bubbly and familiar. ah right, like non-toxic scented glue.
Todo: this one is– *coughing* the worst. I do not recommend this scent, Uraraka.
They were once caught by a someone and todo gave him a dollar to keep his mouth shut
Uraraka and todoroki end up bonding or whatever in the form of pranks and chaos and end up growing closer than they thought they would

Like right now they’re in between dating and best friends (whatever you wanna call that. Will and Grace, maybe?)
Mitsuki goes on a late night run one night and probably recognizes him as katsuki’s classmate and surprised to see him working as cashier like “dont your daddy got money??”
“yes ma’am but i despise him”
She probably goes on a rant abt katsuki and work and he just nods along and throws in a few comments about his job or whatever
“you know, you seem like a nice boy, todoroki-kun. I wouldn’t mind if you dated my son”.
“no offense, mrs. bakugou, but i would punch him.”
They become fast friends
She invites him over sometimes, at some point meets uraraka and loves her also
unfortunatly i have no more to write because i can’t think of anything else but this was fun actually :D I think this is a really fun idea so i might (or if someone else wants to) write a fic about this but idk bc i’m what the kids call “unmotivated most days” so use what you want with these.
(also, i’ve never worked at a cvs before so idk if this is accurate)

Who the hell is narrating right now? The omniscient narrator stuff from the manga only shows up in the anime when announcing quirks so I have no idea if they’re gonna include that narration bit. Anyway Toga love confession hime.

Again, this sorta interaction is the kind of Dekuraka stuff I enjoy. But yeah instead of the love confession we were fearing it’s “GO DEAL WITH YOUR OWN BLONDE RIVAL AND LEAVE ME WITH MINE DAMMIT”.
So there’s a lot of Bakugou vs giant hands shigaraki but it’s not terribly interesting, especially in comparison to the whacky love square shenanigans.
