“Dusky Starfrontlet”
Also known as the Glittering Starfrontlet (Coeligena orina), this beautiful hummingbird is critically endangered with likely less than 250 individual (possibly as few as 75) left in the world. It is native to Colombia. I hope that the beauty of this fiery gem of the hummingbird world will help ignite a passion to help in those that see it, for it has a very uncertain future.

Painted in oil on a 8"x8" panel, this piece is part of the Silent Skies Mural: http://festival.artistsforconservation.org/project/silent-skies
Make sure to check out the link to see art of the 678 endangered bird species on the list.

Virago Art Challenge 2018: Day 28

This badass Feuilly was planned as an oil painting, but I only got as far as the sketch and the partial acrylic under-painting, so that’s what you’re getting for now.  The usual deal: if he turns out crappy, you’ll probably never see any more of him, but if he ends up okay, he’ll eventually pop up on here.  ;)

We mark Easter and the end of the Christian Holy Week with Franz von Stuck’s powerful painting of the Crucifixion, which he made during the difficult years of World War I.

Stuck departs from traditional representations and places the suffering Christ at eye level. The viewer’s position–immediately to the left of the crucified thief in the foreground and to the right of the Virgin Mary– thus becomes part of an intimate circle. Referencing late nineteenth-century debates about the historical details of this method of execution, as well as its location, Stuck depicts Christ with his feet side by side rather than overlapping, and includes Mediterranean style architecture in the background.

Stuck’s oil painting is on view in “Monet to Morisot: The Real and Imagined in European Art.” Entry to this exhibition is included with admission—find out more about the artworks: https://bit.ly/3EVZuKU
