We are excited to continue our online After Hours open houses this semester! Join the Special Collections Research Center on the second Tuesday of each month 4-5 pm for a virtual encounter with our collections. While all the events are online, we have offered an in-person option for the first session in the series. All are welcome to beam in and join us.

Our first event will take place next Tuesday 11 January from 4-5.30 pm EST and will feature a selection of Spanish Treasures at the University of Michigan Library.  The Special Collections Research Center holds an extraordinary collection of early printed books published in Spain from the fifteenth century onward. Particularly significant are the holdings illustrating the Golden Age of Spanish literature in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, that is, the so-called “Siglo de Oro,“ which includes world-renowned writers like Garcilaso de la Vega, Miguel de Cervantes, and Francisco de Quevedo. Curator Pablo Alvarez will provide a tour of artifacts as witnesses of how literary masterpieces such as El Lazarillo de Tormes or Don Quixote were published and read centuries ago, as well as additional documents illustrating some of the political and religious anxieties of Spanish society at that time, including books produced by the formidable Holy Inquisition.

Join us if you can!

Open House + Glenkerry House Fundraiser

Friends, the charity I work for, Open House, has been hurt badly by Coronavirus. Open House normally runs events throughout the year including design workshops for young people from backgrounds under-represented in architecture professions, walking tours and of course the big Open House festival in September. Due to Covid-19 however, all of this has had to stop, and with it nearly all of the charity’s income. Open House is a small independent organisation which could easily go under if a second wave hits the UK.

I am, therefore, making a limited edition A4 risograph print of Glenkerry House, Ernö Goldfinger’s Brutalist housing co-operative in Poplar where I have been spending lockdown in aid of Open House. If you can, please support the charity and get yourself some technicolour brutalism at the same time. All income from sales of this print will be donated to Open House (charity number 1072104). Thank you.

St. Reinette’s University Open House

This Friday, 6/22, from 2 PM EST and going on for a few hours, Saint Reinette’s University will be conducting an Open House, with advertisements on Party Finder. The Open House will be a way for current members to give tours of the premises, explain the university and it’s functions. Due to recent events, the University is hiring in a majority of teaching roles, as well as a myriad of others, and as such, the open house’s primary goal is the recruitment of new staff and students. If you have any friends who are without a company and might be looking for a friendly group, we’ll be about Friday for an extended period of time. If you’re free this Friday, stop by and we’ll greet ya and get to know one another! Looking forward to everyone who stops by.

Server: Balmung (Duh.)

Date: Friday, 6/22 (2 PM til … late.)

Purpose: Open House event to seek new FC members.

Seeking: A myriad of staff roles, teaching or otherwise, and students. You can view the school roster here.

House OM, Yokohama Japan

By Sou Fujimoto

“The three storey open house idea came from the client. They wanted a house with a courtyard with a rich atmosphere. As the site was comparatively small, just 72 square meters, I imagined the interior dwelling space as interwoven in complex ways with the exterior spaces. The house was transformed into an abstract, cloud-like organism. each floor is given a distinctive shape by slicing out a differently shaped exterior space.” –  Sou Fujimoto
