“Suit yourself. Don’t come running to me when she has hysterics and asks Pa to make you behave. Or when Pa decides to disown you for ‘bringing dishonour on the family’.”

Parvati sticks her tongue out at her twin, “Pa doesn’t care - daddy’s little girl 'member? 'Sides I’m a Gryffindor,” she flicks Padma between the eyes, “It’s what we do.”

Parvati and Padma Patil: and how they should have looked in the Yule Ball.

As Christmas approches, let’s talk about Hogwarts Yule Ball. But at first, Let’s talk about “robes”. What are they? In English, it is long shapeless garment tied around the waist, worn by important officials and priests as ceremonial outfits. The word “robe” is French, which simply means “dress”. While the trope is 15 years too late, let’s talk about how the Patil twins should have looked like with Properly Crafted Indian Garment.

The top slide is Parvati Patil in her “shocking pink” robes. The term “shocking pink” or “hot pink”, or “magenta” is called “Rani” or the “colour of Queen” in Hindi, because whether it is an Indian bride or a Queen, this shade of pink was very distinguishable as a rich colour that highlighted femininity, regalness and beauty. The Dress Parvati is wearing is a “Lehenga” or a Two piece gown with a long full skirt and blouse called “choli” that is widely worn across the Western India and sometimes in South India as well. The particular weave she is wearing is Banarasi weave; an Indian silk Brocade, so intricately weaved with golden threats that it takes six months to finish a 9 yard long cloth. It is an artistic marvel to look at some of the great weaves of traditional Indian cloth.

On the other hand, Padma is wearing a “sharara”. The colour is called “Firozi” what JK describes as “bright turquoise”. What looks deceptively like a long top and skirt is actually very wide legged full bodied pants with layers of tulles. This garment was brought in India from the Middle East and often worn by the Muslim aristocratic class as Modest Garment. It gained immense popularity in Bollywood during 2004-2008, and recently it made it a comeback as “Mastani Salwar” after the Film Bajirao Mastani gets released. Nonetheless, Padma’s dress might not be strictly Indian, but I believe she wasn’t as confident as Parvati to show a bit of her skin through the lehenga. It wasn’t the reason that she is shy, but it wasn’t a very Indian setting where exposed midriff would not attract a few glances. But Parvati was different; she was bold and confident and she would not budge to see other girls jealous when they see Harry Potter himself dancing waltz with Parvati with his hand on her waist. She is “here I am look at me in all my glory”.

it’s so nice to remember the actions that you forgot, scenes, places, characters ahhh a love these books so much!
soooo I decided to draw harry’s classmates as i imagined them while reading <3

(btw I was always amused how harry never met ALL of his classmates from other houses throughout his studing at hogwarts
like “ok i know only 4 ravenclaw guys…
well then i guess padma has the biggest bedroom in whole hogwarts”)

Regency themed Harry Potter featuring dubiously researched costumes and furnishings (artistic license was liberally taken). And in case anyone was wondering… yes, I did just binge Bridgerton season 2

Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you, Parvati and Padma Patil of Hogwarts, as they SHOULD have appeared at the Yule Ball ❄️ The Yule Ball scene in Harry Potter and the Goblet or Fire was our girls’ time to shine, but alas, they had to wear those vile orange and pink lengha things. They deserved so much better, so here is my version. According to the Goblet or Fire book, Parvati wore “robes of shocking pink,” and Padma wore “robes of bright turquoise” ….not those tragic, afterthought-looking outfits we ultimately saw on screen. ALSO JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE TWINS DOESN’T MEAN THEY NEED TO WEAR THE SAME DAMN OUTFIT #justiceforthepatilsisters #foreversalty
