How do you create your own masculinity?

“There was always a certain form of masculinity that I really identified with growing up. It terrified me to imagine myself in another way. But in the Army, I was forced to fit inside their box — and I didn’t fit there at all. I was too big of a mystery for them. I excelled at being in my own box, but they wanted the control. I tried for a while… They’d tell me to do 12 push ups and I’d do 40. I put my best in it. And then they chaptered me out.” – D’Jamel Young, 28, Bronx, NY

What does masculinity mean to you?

“That is something that changes for me and for everyone all the time. Generally, the answer can only be true in this moment through certain textures — the way something feels on my body at this time. But ultimately, masculinity is one range of options for gender expression among many. For me, masculinity feels like a certain amount of tension between comfort and vulnerability.” – Ketch Wehr, Yorkville, NY

Forgotten Housing Estates Of Paris Documented By Laurent Kronental

‘Every generation dreams of what will be, building structures of what it imagines the future will be like. For the last four years, French photographer Laurent Kronental has been documenting the lives of the senior citizens who now live in Paris’ big housing projects that were built between the 1950’s and 1980’s.

“Souvenir d’un Futur documents the life of senior citizens living in the “Grands Ensembles” (large housing projects) around Paris,” reads the artist statement. “He felt a need to examine their living conditions and shed light over a sometimes-neglected generation. Exposing these unsung and underestimated suburban areas is a means to reveal the poetry of aging environments slowly vanishing, and with them, the memory of modernist utopia.”’

Student Captures What Happens When People Are Told They Are Beautiful

‘How would you react if someone told you that you’re beautiful? 18-year-old Shea Glover, a highschool student from Chicago, conducted a social experiment to find out. She posed people in front of her camera and then told them “I’m taking pictures of things I find beautiful.”

The responses are touching. “I conducted an independent project which evidently turned into a social experiment regarding beauty,” Glover writes on YouTube. “I want to clarify that my intentions were not to get a reaction out of people. I was simply filming beauty and this is the result.”’

Tired Of Staged Breastfeeding Photos, I Started Shooting It In All Its Beautiful Messiness

‘I was tired of seeing unrealistic photographs of women breastfeeding, so I took a photo of myself breastfeeding my baby, posted it on Facebook, and asked if other women would like to be photographed in the same way. I was inundated with responses, and so the project began!

In the media, I feel there is a distinct lack of authenticity in images of women breastfeeding. Most photos are highly stylized, airbrushed and unrealistic; many are sheer fantasy. Whether it is the angelic mother in her clinical white perfection or some model on the front of a fashion magazine. I’m tired of images that fail to show the realities of breastfeeding for most women.

This project is about portraying breastfeeding in all its beautiful messiness. This is about tired eyes and no makeup. This is about milk leaks and ratty hair. This is about giving in to all the demands of your 2-year-old while you try to feed your newborn. This is about dishes piled up in the kitchen and dirty laundry building in the corner. This is about puke on your shoulder and toys on the floor. This is about let down milk sprays in cafes and engorged breasts at the park. This is about empowering women.

This is about the amazing thing that only we, the women humans of this earth, can do; sustain another humans life with our own.’
