“The men are testing me as much as I’m testing them. They want to see if I’m softer than my father. I have to show them I’m not.’

Hephaistion shot him a scathing look. ‘Most of them have known you since you were a boy. Where in all Hades would they have got the idea that you’re soft?”

“You could stay with your father and raise horses. There’s honour in it.’

‘I could,’ Hephaistion agreed. ‘And I will, when all this is done. But right now that would mean leaving you to your own good sense, and from what I can tell that’s thin on the ground.”

The setting of the novel I’m currently working on: Abaron Hall. Set during the last few days of September in 1899, Ophelia Allred and eleven others are invited by the enigmatic recluse, Lord Alvin Fane to his home for a special competition. But with strange visions, ruthless co-contenders, and rumors of spirits walking the halls at night, it’s clear that there is something far more sinister at hand

A rough design of a potential cover for the novel I’m working on (at least it has the vibes i’m trying to capture).

I want to start talking about it more regularly on here, hopefully start generating some hype. If you like mystery, ghosts, historical fiction, gothic or academia vibes, and lgbtqia rep, then follow along with the writing and editing process!

sewer-seance:

Really feeling the need to make/post memes about my book and the characters in it, even though it’s the sequel and I haven’t even talked about the og book yet…

Me, reconsidering the order I release my trilogy so I can infodump about some genuine dumbasses:

lmzorn:“I hope you don’t snore.’ Alexandros spoke over his shoulder as he moved back to his own bed.

lmzorn:

“I hope you don’t snore.’ Alexandros spoke over his shoulder as he moved back to his own bed.

‘Why, do you?’

The prince, reaching to put out the lamp, paused, surprised. ‘I don’t know. I don’t think so. But I’ve never shared a room before.’

‘Well then,’ said Hephaistion, rolling to his back to smile up at the ceiling. ‘I suppose we’ll both find out.”

Dates 3: Cover Process!

Erica Chan, our cover artist for Dates 3, is just… absurdly powerful, and since we’re been lucky enough to have her do our cover illustrations three books running, we wanted to dig in and let you get a glimpse of her process!

We started out by brainstorming, and then Erica brought us a whole bunch of thumbnails that covered a couple different environments and adventurous actions (trees and mountains; climbing and sailing), before we ultimately decided that we wanted to lean into forests and exploration—and that we really wanted to have kids on the cover this time.

Then, Erica worked up a rough sketch, did a ton of research, and refined the figures. And after that, it was a long, careful process of inks, colors, and… many tweaks. So many tweaks. Until, finally we had our cover!

We’re incredibly happy with how it turned out and so excited to hold it in our hands! We hit our base goal for Dates 3 yesterday, but if we reach our $30,000 stretch goal, we’ll be able to get some spot gloss on this gorgeous cover (AND increase our contributor page rates by $10/page). So back the book now—there’s just one week left!

Dates 3: Inks!

Inks are the second-to-last checkin we schedule out for our artists, and just like pencils and thumbnails, everyone does them differently. Some folks make really heavy use of spot blacks (Sonia and Sparklenaut, the first and fourth images), and others mostly just outline shapes and plan on doing the bulk of their rendering with tones. Regardless, inks are when we see pages start to really firm up and settle into their final form, which is always super exciting for us as editors!

The pages above are from stories by (in order): @sonialiaoart,@ametalias,@fawnprinceling, and @sparklenautarts&@basaliskwrites

You can see some Dates 3 thumbnailsandpencils in our process tag, and dig into our contributor feature thread on twitter to find the final versions of some of these pages! And, since there are just 10 days left in the campaign:
